Why the Meldezettel decides when your Austria shipment clears

Austrian customs will not finalise duty relief on used household goods until your address is registered with the local Meldeamt. That registration is due within three days of moving in and produces the Meldebestaetigung, still widely called the Meldezettel. A shipment that arrives before the paperwork is done does not get delivered early, it waits, and storage at the point of entry is chargeable while it does.

This is the most avoidable cost on the route and it catches people who thought they were being organised by shipping ahead of themselves. The sequence only works one way round: arrive, register, then clear. Movers who run this route weekly plan the collection date backwards from it.

The rest of the job is more forgiving. Austria is landlocked, so goods travel by road through the Channel Tunnel and Germany rather than by sea, which means the journey is measured in days rather than weeks and priced by cubic metres rather than container size. There is a sea option above roughly 30 cubic metres, a container to Hamburg or Rotterdam then inland road, but it takes three to five weeks and rarely earns its place.

Send the collection town, the Austrian delivery address, your move date, a rough volume in cubic metres and access notes at both ends. That is enough for a mover to check the route and come back with real numbers.

Removals to Austria from UK addresses

Moves cover boxes, furniture, smaller shipments, full home moves and stored household goods. The route runs by road through the Channel Tunnel or a ferry crossing, across France or Belgium, through Germany and onto the Austrian motorway network. Many operators combine Austrian runs with German drops, which is what keeps shared load prices down.

Since Brexit the UK is a third country for customs purposes, so a declaration is needed even though nothing crosses an ocean. Used household goods normally clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief, handled by the matched company as part of the job.

Moving from UK to Austria also means checking the residence rules that apply to your situation before the date is fixed. Immigration and tax decisions should be checked against official sources rather than taken from a removals page.

Austria to UK returns and estate clearances

Austria international movers loading household goods for the return route to the UK

The return leg is used by returning residents, families, students, seasonal workers finishing a ski contract and people clearing an Austrian property. It is not the outbound job in reverse: you must apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence relief using the ToR1 form and hold the reference number before the goods ship.

Processing runs two to four weeks and stretches to six in the June to September peak. Furniture intended for a second home is specifically excluded, which catches anyone keeping a place in Austria while furnishing a UK property.

Moving company quotes and planning bands by volume

These are planning ranges, not quotes. They are built from published route rates across ten UK origins, cross checked against 2026 entry prices at MuveOne, VanOne, MyCheapRemovals and Dimond Movers, so you can sanity check any figure you are given. The matched moving company confirms the real price after checking your route, cubic metres, access, packing, paperwork, insurance and date.

Scottish and Northern Irish collections consistently price around 10 per cent above equivalent English routes because of the extra distance to the Channel crossing. Aberdeen and Dundee sit at the top of that spread. Full cost guide · Part load pricing · Furniture removals to Austria

📄 Relief, and the deadline that expires it

Uebersiedlungsgut relief in full

Austrian customs allows used household goods in free of duty under Uebersiedlungsgut relief. You qualify if you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve consecutive months, have owned and used the goods for at least six months, and import them within twelve months of changing your residence. The goods cannot be sold or transferred for twelve months after clearance.

  • Lived outside the EU 12 consecutive months
  • Owned and used the goods at least 6 months
  • Imported within 12 months of the residence change
  • Meldebestaetigung obtained within 3 days of moving in
  • Not sold or transferred for 12 months after clearance

If relief does not apply, Austrian VAT is 20 per cent on the value of the goods, plus any duty. Worth knowing before you decide to ship a sofa bought last month. Full Austria customs checklist.

Distance from London, and what it does to the price

Road distance is the second largest cost driver after volume, and it varies more inside Austria than people expect. Vorarlberg is roughly 560 km closer to the UK than Graz.

🏆 Who you are actually dealing with

Why a matching service and not a removal company

International Removals Companies is operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD and has been matching international moving enquiries since November 2010. We are not a removal company, and that is the point. We have no vehicle to fill, so our only job is to point you at the right firm for your route rather than the one paying most for leads.

This matters because the country is not one job. A fourth floor flat in Vienna with no lift, a ski season move into Tyrol and a family relocation to Graz all need different crews, vehicles and timings. One enquiry reaches one company that runs your route, rather than ten firms competing to phone you first.

Vienna runs on a rhythm of its own: as one of the four official seats of the United Nations, with the IAEA, OPEC and the OSCE based there, it sees a steady cycle of three to five year postings arriving and leaving on schedule.

Common German terms you may hear

Austrians say Übersiedlung where Germans say Umzug. You may also meet Umzugsunternehmen, Spedition and Möbeltransport. This page stays in English, but the terms help when speaking to Austrian landlords, letting agents or the local Meldeamt.

Questions people ask before booking

What holds a shipment at Austrian customs?

Almost always the Meldebestaetigung, formerly the Meldezettel. Austrian customs will not finalise Uebersiedlungsgut relief on used household goods until your address is registered with the local Meldeamt, and that registration is due within three days of moving in. Goods that arrive before it is done wait, and storage at the point of entry is chargeable.

How much do removals to Austria cost from the UK?

As a planning guide, a 5 cubic metre shared load runs about £850 to £1,400, 15 cubic metres about £2,000 to £3,100 and a 30 cubic metre dedicated vehicle about £3,500 to £5,400. Ranges are built from published 2026 route rates across ten UK origins. Collections in Scotland and Northern Ireland typically add around 10 per cent.

Which Austrian city is quickest to reach from the UK?

Vorarlberg in the far west, at roughly 1,040 km from London. Bregenz, Dornbirn and Feldkirch are reached through southern Germany with no Alpine pass, so a dedicated vehicle runs two to three days. Graz in the south east is the longest at about 1,600 km and three to four days. The distance table on this page ranks all 28 destinations.

Do I pay duty or VAT moving from the UK to Austria?

Usually not. Used household goods clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief when you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve consecutive months, have owned and used the goods for six months, and import within twelve months of changing residence. Austrian VAT is 20 per cent if relief does not apply.

Can I ship goods to Austria by sea?

For most moves, no. Austria is landlocked, so the standard route is road freight the whole way, two to four days on a dedicated vehicle. There is a sea option above roughly 30 cubic metres, a container to Hamburg or Rotterdam then inland road, but it takes three to five weeks and only makes sense on large volumes.

What is the difference between a shared load and a dedicated vehicle?

A shared load means your goods travel alongside other households and you pay only for the space you use, in exchange for a collection window rather than a fixed day. A dedicated vehicle carries your household alone and runs to your date. On volumes under about twenty cubic metres the shared load is usually far cheaper.

Can you help with changing pounds into euros?

Yes. Austria uses the euro and currency exchange is included in what we help with. We work through trusted partners who are experts in currency exchange, charge no hidden fees, hold 5-star consumer ratings and offer competitive exchange. Mention it on the enquiry form.

How far ahead should I book a move to Austria?

Six to eight weeks for a dedicated vehicle on a named day, and longer between June and September. A shared load can often be arranged in two to three weeks because you are giving up the fixed date in exchange. Allow a further week of slack behind the customs entry.

Are there rules about when the crew can work on delivery day?

Yes, and they are observed. Most Austrian residential buildings keep Ruhezeiten, quiet hours running roughly from 10pm to 6am and all day Sunday. A delivery that overruns has to stop rather than push on, which is why a morning slot is worth asking for, particularly in older buildings with a shared stairwell.

Do I need to register my Austrian address even as an EU citizen?

Yes. The requirement applies regardless of nationality and regardless of where you have moved from. You register with the local Meldeamt within three days of moving in, and you will need the confirmation for a bank account, a phone contract and most tenancy agreements as well as for the customs entry.

Which UK cities do you collect from for Austria moves?

Any UK address. London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow are the most frequent collection points on this route, and vehicles run to Austria from all of them. Scottish and Northern Irish collections price around 10 per cent above equivalent English ones because of the extra distance to the Channel crossing.
