Austrian customs will not finalise duty relief on used household goods until your address is registered with the local Meldeamt. That registration is due within three days of moving in and produces the Meldebestaetigung, still widely called the Meldezettel. A shipment that arrives before the paperwork is done does not get delivered early, it waits, and storage at the point of entry is chargeable while it does.
This is the most avoidable cost on the route and it catches people who thought they were being organised by shipping ahead of themselves. The sequence only works one way round: arrive, register, then clear. Movers who run this route weekly plan the collection date backwards from it.
The rest of the job is more forgiving. Austria is landlocked, so goods travel by road through the Channel Tunnel and Germany rather than by sea, which means the journey is measured in days rather than weeks and priced by cubic metres rather than container size. There is a sea option above roughly 30 cubic metres, a container to Hamburg or Rotterdam then inland road, but it takes three to five weeks and rarely earns its place.
Moves cover boxes, furniture, smaller shipments, full home moves and stored household goods. The route runs by road through the Channel Tunnel or a ferry crossing, across France or Belgium, through Germany and onto the Austrian motorway network. Many operators combine Austrian runs with German drops, which is what keeps shared load prices down.
Since Brexit the UK is a third country for customs purposes, so a declaration is needed even though nothing crosses an ocean. Used household goods normally clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief, handled by the matched company as part of the job.
Moving from UK to Austria also means checking the residence rules that apply to your situation before the date is fixed. Immigration and tax decisions should be checked against official sources rather than taken from a removals page.
The return leg is used by returning residents, families, students, seasonal workers finishing a ski contract and people clearing an Austrian property. It is not the outbound job in reverse: you must apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence relief using the ToR1 form and hold the reference number before the goods ship.
Processing runs two to four weeks and stretches to six in the June to September peak. Furniture intended for a second home is specifically excluded, which catches anyone keeping a place in Austria while furnishing a UK property.

Austrian customs allows used household goods in free of duty under Uebersiedlungsgut relief. You qualify if you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve consecutive months, have owned and used the goods for at least six months, and import them within twelve months of changing your residence. The goods cannot be sold or transferred for twelve months after clearance.

The relief expires. If your goods are still in UK storage more than twelve months after you registered your Austrian address, duty and 20 per cent VAT can become payable on the full value of a household you already owned. Yes, and they are observed. Most Austrian residential buildings keep Ruhezeiten, quiet hours running roughly from 10pm to 6am and all day Sunday. A delivery that overruns has to stop rather than push on, which is why a morning slot is worth asking for, particularly in older buildings with a shared stairwell.
