Most international moves involve storage somewhere, because dates rarely line up. A UK sale completes before the local tenancy starts, a contract begins before the flat is ready, or a property purchase drags on. Storage is the normal answer and it is not expensive.
What is expensive is storing goods without understanding what it does to your customs position. Uebersiedlungsgut relief requires the goods to be imported within twelve months of your change of residence. Register your Austrian address in March and your belongings need to arrive by the following March.
Miss that and duty plus 20 per cent local VAT can become payable on the full value of a household you already owned. It is the most avoidable large cost on this route, and it catches people who thought they were being careful by storing rather than rushing.
