Since Brexit the UK is a third country for customs, so a declaration is needed on every shipment even though nothing crosses an ocean. Used household goods normally clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief, which the mover handles as part of the job.
The relief expires. If your goods are still in UK storage more than twelve months after you registered your Austrian address, duty and 20 per cent VAT can become payable on the full value. If you are storing before shipping, say so at quote stage so the mover can plan around the deadline.
Much of central Linz was rebuilt after the war, so the housing stock is newer than Vienna's or Salzburg's and generally easier to work with. Lifts are common, stairwells are wider, and loading access is usually possible close to the building.
The Altstadt around Hauptplatz is the exception. It is compact and older, with restricted vehicle access, and deliveries there follow the same shuttle pattern as any historic centre.
Addresses in the industrial belt to the east need a different check. Company housing and newer developments near the steelworks usually have good vehicle access, but site security can require advance notice and a named driver. In the newer districts usually, in the older core often not. Where a large vehicle cannot get close, goods transfer to a smaller van for the final stage. Send your floor number, whether there is a lift, and a photograph of the street with your enquiry and the stage can be priced properly.
Books, clothes and linen are worth doing yourself. Leave the kitchen, glassware, pictures and anything fragile to the crew, because most movers will not cover owner packed cartons for breakage. If a box matters, let them pack that one.
Never on the lorry. Pets travel separately and need an Animal Health Certificate from an official vet, valid for ten days from issue, with tapeworm treatment for dogs. Mention it at enquiry stage so the timings are coordinated rather than clashing.
Yes, and it is a common size: two to five cubic metres suits a shared load where you pay only for the space used. Check whether your accommodation restricts delivery windows, because purpose built student buildings usually do, and book the slot before the vehicle.
In most Austrian town and city centres, yes. A Halteverbot reserves street space outside the building and is applied for through the district office, taking days rather than hours. Your mover normally arranges it, but only with the address in good time.
Sometimes, and Linz is a better place to ask than most. The city has a working Danube freight port alongside its road links, so options exist for industrial and oversized cargo that would be awkward elsewhere. Household goods and commercial equipment are usually declared differently at customs, so list them separately at quote stage.
Distance. Linz sits roughly 150 km closer to the UK than Vienna on the same motorway, and the vehicle reaches it first. On a 30 cubic metre move that difference is worth a few hundred pounds, and on a shared load it also means slightly shorter transit.
