Why late September is the hardest week to move to Graz

Three universities sit inside the city, the University of Graz, Graz University of Technology and the Medical University, and their terms start together. The last fortnight of September is the busiest window in the local year and the hardest in which to get a dedicated vehicle on a named date.

Serving international removals, relocation and shipping to Styria from anywhere in the UK. Graz is about 1,600 km from London, the longest Austrian run of the five main cities. A dedicated vehicle takes three to four days, a shared load six to nine. Most moves land between £950 and £5,800. Term dates drive demand here more than anything else. We match you with one vetted moving company for your route, free.

Graz removals split fairly cleanly into two groups: academic and student moves tied to the university calendar, and engineering relocations tied to the automotive industry. Austria's second city at around 300,000 people, it runs on a different rhythm from Vienna.

Three universities sit inside the city: the University of Graz, Graz University of Technology and the Medical University. Between them they pull in a substantial international academic population, and that population moves in September and out in June or July. If your move is tied to a semester, book early. The last fortnight of September is the busiest window in the Graz year and the hardest in which to get a dedicated vehicle on a named date.

The other draw is engineering. Magna Steyr builds vehicles under contract for several marques in the city, and the wider Styrian automotive and materials sector brings in engineers on fixed-term contracts. Those moves tend to be smaller, faster and more likely to need storage at one end.

Routes, transit times and removal services

Graz sits south east of the Alps, so the route runs through Germany and down past Vienna or through Salzburg on the A9 Pyhrn motorway. That extra leg is why Graz prices slightly above Vienna on the same volume despite being a much smaller city.

It also sits closer to Ljubljana and Zagreb than to Munich, which matters if your move continues south. If the household is going on to Slovenia or Croatia afterwards, say so early, because a single vehicle doing both legs is cheaper than two jobs.

Two service types cover almost every move on this route. A shared load puts your goods on a vehicle with other customers' belongings, and you pay only for the space you use. A dedicated vehicle carries your household alone and runs to your date. The right choice is usually decided by how firm your dates are, not by how much you are shipping.

People searching Graz movers, Graz removals or a removal to Graz are usually looking at the same thing: a European removal by road, priced on cubic metres and mileage. The removal services worth paying for here are the ones that ask about your building before they quote, because Graz addresses vary far more than the price does.

Moving company quotes and what changes them

Most household moves here land between £950 and £5,800. These are planning ranges, not quotes. Competitor route pricing puts Leeds to Graz at about £1,069 for 5 cubic metres and £3,599 for 30, the highest of the five Austrian city routes we benchmarked. That is the south-eastern leg beyond Vienna showing in the numbers.

Move size Roughly Planning range
Boxes and a few items 1 to 3 m³ £780 to £1,100
Studio or one bedroom about 5 m³ £950 to £1,450
One to two bedroom about 10 m³ £1,400 to £2,150
Two bedroom part load about 15 m³ £2,150 to £3,250
Three bedroom dedicated about 30 m³ £3,650 to £5,800

Scottish and Northern Irish collections add roughly 10 per cent, because of the extra distance to the Channel crossing. Stairs, lifts, parking, packing and temporary holding all move the final figure.

📄 Customs relief and Austrian paperwork

Uebersiedlungsgut relief explained

Since Brexit the UK is a third country for customs, so a declaration is needed on every shipment even though nothing crosses an ocean. Used household goods normally clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief, which the mover handles as part of the job.

  • Lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months.
  • Owned and used the goods for at least 6 months.
  • Goods imported within 12 months of your change of residence.
  • Registered your Austrian address and obtained the Meldezettel within 3 days of moving in.
  • Goods not sold or transferred for 12 months after clearance.

🏗 The Altstadt, the Schlossberg and student blocks

Delivery access, and what to check before the survey

The Graz Altstadt is a UNESCO site and the streets around Hauptplatz were laid out for carts. Larger vehicles cannot get close to many addresses, so a shuttle van from a parking point is common. Ask whether that stage is inside the quoted price.

The Schlossberg rises straight out of the centre, and addresses on the slopes below it can involve steep approaches and tight turns. If your street climbs, mention it. It changes the vehicle the mover sends.

Student accommodation is the other pattern worth flagging. Purpose-built blocks in districts such as Geidorf and Lend usually have good access and a lift, but delivery windows are often restricted by the building management and need booking. A move that arrives without a slot booked can sit on the vehicle for a day.

Do you need a removal van of your own?

Almost never. Hiring a removal van and driving there yourself looks cheap until you add fuel, the Channel crossing, German and Austrian tolls, the motorway Vignette, overnight stops and one way hire fees. You also carry the customs declaration alone. A shared load with a professional removal company is usually cheaper and far simpler.

Questions answered

Questions people ask before booking

How much does shipping and removals cost?

As a planning guide, a 5 cubic metre shared load to Graz runs about 950 to 1,450 pounds, a 15 cubic metre part load about 2,150 to 3,250 pounds, and a 30 cubic metre dedicated vehicle about 3,650 to 5,800 pounds. Ranges are compiled from published 2026 competitor route rates. Collections in Scotland and Northern Ireland typically add around 10 per cent.

What do I need to tell the mover about my Graz building?

Floor number, whether there is a lift and roughly how big it is, the width of the stairwell, and whether a vehicle can stop outside. Those four answers change the crew size and the time on site more than the distance from the UK does.

What is included in a full packing service?

Materials, labour and a numbered inventory that ties to the customs entry. An experienced crew packs a two bedroom flat in about a day. Expect it to add roughly 15 to 25 per cent to the total, and to be the difference between a successful insurance claim and an argument.

Can you move me back from Graz to the UK later?

Yes, and the customs side is different rather than the same in reverse. You apply to HMRC for Transfer of Residence relief using the ToR1 form before the goods ship, and you must hold the reference number in advance. Processing runs two to four weeks, longer in summer.

What is usually missing from a cheap quote?

Three things, in order. Limited liability cover instead of all risks. No allowance for a parking permit or a shuttle stage at the Graz end. And storage priced only after a short free period. Compare the scope line by line rather than the total.

Where will the removal vehicle park here?

That is worth settling before the day. Austrian residential streets rarely have space for a lorry to stand for several hours, so a reserved bay is usually arranged in advance through the district office. Without one the crew carries further, and a long carry is charged.

Do I pay duty or VAT on belongings moving here?

Usually not. Used household goods clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief when you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve consecutive months, have owned and used the goods for six months, and import within twelve months of changing residence. Austrian VAT is 20 per cent if relief does not apply.

Does it cost more to move from Scotland or Northern Ireland?

Yes, by roughly ten per cent on equivalent volumes, because of the extra distance to the Channel crossing. Aberdeen and Dundee sit at the top of that spread. It is a real difference rather than a mover marking you up, and it should be visible on the quote.

Will I know where my goods are on the way here?

Ask what updates you get and from whom. On a dedicated vehicle the driver is usually contactable. On a shared load your goods sit at a consolidation point for part of the journey, so updates come from the office rather than the road. Neither is a problem if you expect it.

How far ahead should I book a move here?

Six to eight weeks for a dedicated vehicle on a named day, and longer between June and September. A shared load can often be arranged in two to three weeks because you are giving up the fixed date in exchange. Allow a further week of slack behind the customs entry.

Can you handle a student or academic move to Graz?

Yes, and it is one of the more common Graz jobs. Small volumes to university accommodation or a shared flat suit a shared load, where you pay only for the space used. Check whether your building restricts delivery windows, because most purpose-built student blocks do.

Is Graz a good base if I might move on to Slovenia or Croatia later?

Geographically yes, and it changes how you should plan. Graz is closer to Ljubljana and Zagreb than to Munich. If a second leg is likely, mention it at the first quote, because one vehicle covering both is cheaper than commissioning a second job later.
