The Kleinwalsertal is Austrian territory with no road connection to the rest of the state. Riezlern, Hirschegg, Mittelberg and Baad are approached via Oberstdorf in Bavaria, and those Austrian villages even use German postcodes.
Serving international removals, relocation and shipping to Vorarlberg from anywhere in the UK. Vorarlberg is about 1,050 km from London, the closest part of Austria to the UK. A dedicated vehicle takes two to three days, a shared load four to eight. Most moves land between £800 and £5,320. The one thing to settle first is which valley you are going to. We match you with one vetted moving company for your route, free.
Vorarlberg removals are the cheapest and fastest of any Austrian state, and the reason is that the vehicle never crosses an Alp to get there. Austria's westernmost state, with about 400,000 people, sits between Lake Constance and the Arlberg, closer to Zurich than to Vienna.
It is worth understanding how the state connects to the rest of the country, because it shapes every quote. There is effectively one road link east: the Arlberg, either through the toll tunnel or over the pass. The alternative through the Lechtal is usually shut in winter. For a UK move that is good news, since vehicles come in from the German side and never need the Arlberg at all, but it explains why Vorarlberg loads often travel with Swiss and Bavarian work rather than with Vienna work.
The state also feels different once you arrive. Vorarlbergers speak Alemannic rather than the Bavarian dialects of the rest of Austria, which is closer to Swiss German than to Viennese and catches out people who learned their German in Berlin. The economy runs on precision manufacturing rather than tourism, with several world leaders in lighting, furniture fittings and cable cars headquartered in towns most visitors have never heard of. Relocations here are more often engineering postings than retirements.
The route runs through southern Germany to Lindau and over the border, or up from Switzerland at Buchs and St Margrethen. There is no Alpine pass and no tunnel toll on the way in, which is why the state prices at the bottom of the Austrian range on every volume.
Two routing points worth knowing. The Silvretta High Alpine Road, the summer link from the Montafon into Tyrol, is not due to reopen until 2030 following geological survey work, so do not assume it as an alternative. And the Lechtal road between Warth and Lech normally closes for the winter, which removes the northern back route into the state.
Two service types cover almost every move on this route. A shared load puts your goods on a vehicle with other customers' belongings, and you pay only for the space you use. A dedicated vehicle carries your household alone and runs to your date. The right choice is usually decided by how firm your dates are, not by how much you are shipping.
Vorarlberg movers, Vorarlberg removals and a removal to Vorarlberg all describe the same job: a European removal by road, priced on volume and distance. What is different about this state is that half the routing questions are answered before the vehicle leaves the UK, because the way in is settled by geography rather than preference.
Most household moves here land between £800 and £5,320. These are planning ranges, not quotes. Vorarlberg benchmarks lowest of any Austrian region on equivalent volumes, roughly 400 km less road than Vienna with no Alpine leg. Against a national mean of about £1,071 for 5 cubic metres, the Rhine valley towns sit clearly below it. Montafon, Bregenzerwald and Kleinwalsertal addresses carry a valley premium on top.
| Move size | Roughly | Planning range |
|---|---|---|
| Boxes and a few items | 1 to 3 m³ | £680 to £990 |
| Studio or one bedroom | about 5 m³ | £800 to £1,270 |
| One to two bedroom | about 10 m³ | £1,250 to £1,870 |
| Two bedroom part load | about 15 m³ | £1,900 to £2,880 |
| Three bedroom dedicated | about 30 m³ | £3,350 to £5,320 |
Scottish and Northern Irish collections add roughly 10 per cent, because of the extra distance to the Channel crossing. Stairs, lifts, parking, packing and temporary holding all move the final figure.
Send your collection postcode, the delivery address, your date and a rough inventory. One vetted moving company checks the route and comes back with a real figure. Free, and no obligation to book.
Since Brexit the UK is a third country for customs, so a declaration is needed on every shipment even though nothing crosses an ocean. Used household goods normally clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief, which the mover handles as part of the job.
The relief expires. If your goods are still in UK storage more than twelve months after you registered your Austrian address, duty and 20 per cent VAT can become payable on the full value. If you are storing before shipping, say so at quote stage so the mover can plan around the deadline.
Most of the population lives on the Rhine valley floor, in a near-continuous run from Bregenz through Dornbirn, Hohenems and Lustenau to Feldkirch. Those addresses are flat, well served and generally take a full-size vehicle. The three main towns each have their own page.
The side valleys are the harder work, and there are four worth naming. The Montafon runs south from Bludenz to Schruns and Gaschurn. The Bregenzerwald climbs east through Egg and Bezau towards Warth. The Grosswalsertal and the Klostertal both narrow quickly. Village addresses in any of them commonly need the goods transferred to a smaller vehicle, and a winter date needs slack rather than optimism.
Then there is the Kleinwalsertal, which is unlike anywhere else you will ship to. The valley is Austrian territory in Vorarlberg, but it has no road connection to the rest of the state at all. Riezlern, Hirschegg, Mittelberg and Baad are reached only through Oberstdorf in Germany, which is why those Austrian villages use German postcodes. A delivery there is planned as a German route with an Austrian destination, and a mover who does not know that will quote it wrong.
Almost never. Hiring a removal van and driving there yourself looks cheap until you add fuel, the Channel crossing, German and Austrian tolls, the motorway Vignette, overnight stops and one way hire fees. You also carry the customs declaration alone. A shared load with a professional removal company is usually cheaper and far simpler.
Austria uses the euro, so moving money is part of moving home. We have helped customers with currency exchange in any currency for many years, through trusted partners, and it is included in what we do. Mention it on the quote form and we will make the introduction.

As a planning guide, a 5 cubic metre shared load to Vorarlberg runs about 800 to 1,270 pounds, a 15 cubic metre part load about 1,900 to 2,880 pounds, and a 30 cubic metre dedicated vehicle about 3,350 to 5,320 pounds. Ranges are compiled from published 2026 competitor route rates. Collections in Scotland and Northern Ireland typically add around 10 per cent.
Books, clothes and linen are worth doing yourself. Leave the kitchen, glassware, pictures and anything fragile to the crew, because most movers will not cover owner packed cartons for breakage. If a box matters, let them pack that one.
Never on the lorry. Pets travel separately and need an Animal Health Certificate from an official vet, valid for ten days from issue, with tapeworm treatment for dogs. Mention it at enquiry stage so the timings are coordinated rather than clashing.
Yes, and it is a common size: two to five cubic metres suits a shared load where you pay only for the space used. Check whether your accommodation restricts delivery windows, because purpose built student buildings usually do, and book the slot before the vehicle.
In most Austrian town and city centres, yes. A Halteverbot reserves street space outside the building and is applied for through the district office, taking days rather than hours. Your mover normally arranges it, but only with the address in good time.
Typically owner packed cartons for breakage, cash, jewellery and documents, and anything not listed on the inventory. Keep valuables and papers with you rather than in the shipment, and declare high value items at quote stage so they are surveyed properly.
They should on anything above about eight cubic metres, in person or by video. A price given without a survey is an estimate. Ask what happens if the volume is larger on the day: a stated rate per extra cubic metre is a good answer, sorting it out on the day is not.
Ask for the rate per extra cubic metre at quote stage. A surveyed quote should hold. An unsurveyed estimate will move, and the day of collection is a poor moment to negotiate. This is the main argument for a video survey on anything above eight cubic metres.
Not necessarily, but plan for it. Austrian commercial winter tyre rules run November to mid April in wintry conditions, and a heavy snowfall can slow or close a route for a day. A winter date needs a window rather than a fixed morning.
A shared load means your goods travel alongside other households and you pay only for the space you use, in exchange for a collection window rather than a fixed day. A dedicated vehicle carries your household alone and runs to your date. On smaller volumes the shared load is usually far cheaper.
Austrian, but reached entirely through Germany, and that catches out movers who have not done it before. The valley sits in Vorarlberg with no road link to the rest of the state, so Riezlern, Hirschegg, Mittelberg and Baad are approached via Oberstdorf in Bavaria. Those Austrian villages even use German postcodes. The goods clear into Austria and Austrian relief applies, but the routing is planned as a German run.
Vorarlberg as a whole, with separate pages for the three largest towns. Use Bregenz for the Lake Constance shore, Dornbirn for the central Rhine valley, and Feldkirch for the Liechtenstein border and the Montafon approach. This page is the right starting point if your address is in a side valley, if you are comparing towns, or if you are not yet certain where in the state you will land.
