The Salzburger Festspiele runs from late July through August. Accommodation fills, the centre congests and permit-controlled access into the old town gets materially harder, so delivery slots in those weeks are scarce, slower and more expensive to arrange.
Serving international removals, relocation and shipping to Salzburg from anywhere in the UK. Salzburg is about 1,250 km from London and the first Austrian city off the German motorway. A dedicated vehicle takes two to three days, a shared load five to eight. Most moves land between £850 and £5,450. Avoid the festival weeks if you possibly can. We match you with one vetted moving company for your route, free.
Salzburg removals have one scheduling quirk no other Austrian city shares, and it is worth knowing before you pick a date. The city of around 155,000 sits right on the German border, with an old town that vehicles largely cannot enter and a festival that takes over the calendar every summer.
The Salzburger Festspiele runs through late July and August. During those weeks accommodation is full, the centre is busy, and moving a household through it is harder and slower than at any other time of year. If your dates can avoid that window, avoid it. If they cannot, tell the mover early so the delivery is planned around it rather than into it.
The border is the second thing that shapes Salzburg moves. Freilassing sits directly across it in Bavaria, and a good number of people working in Salzburg live on the German side. If your delivery address is actually in Germany, that is a different customs job and a different page, so be precise about which country the goods are landing in.
Salzburg is the first Austrian city a UK vehicle reaches, coming off the German motorway network near Freilassing, roughly 1,250 km from London. Shared loads bound for Linz and Vienna run through it, so departure frequency is good in both directions.
It is also the gateway to the Salzkammergut lakes and the ski areas south of the city. If your final address is at Zell am See, Saalfelden or one of the resort valleys, the Salzburg leg is the easy part and the last thirty kilometres is where the planning goes.
Two service types cover almost every move on this route. A shared load puts your goods on a vehicle with other customers' belongings, and you pay only for the space you use. A dedicated vehicle carries your household alone and runs to your date. The right choice is usually decided by how firm your dates are, not by how much you are shipping.
Salzburg movers, Salzburg removals and a removal to Salzburg are the same job under different names: a European removal by road, priced on volume and distance. On this route the removal services that matter are old town access and timing, and those are the two things a cheap quote usually leaves out.
Most household moves here land between £850 and £5,450. These are planning ranges, not quotes. Competitor route pricing puts Manchester to Salzburg at about £1,029 for 5 cubic metres and £3,429 for 30, the lowest 5 cubic metre figure across the routes we benchmarked. Being first off the German motorway is why.
| Move size | Roughly | Planning range |
|---|---|---|
| Boxes and a few items | 1 to 3 m³ | £700 to £1,000 |
| Studio or one bedroom | about 5 m³ | £850 to £1,320 |
| One to two bedroom | about 10 m³ | £1,300 to £1,950 |
| Two bedroom part load | about 15 m³ | £1,980 to £2,980 |
| Three bedroom dedicated | about 30 m³ | £3,450 to £5,450 |
Scottish and Northern Irish collections add roughly 10 per cent, because of the extra distance to the Channel crossing. Stairs, lifts, parking, packing and temporary holding all move the final figure.
Send your collection postcode, the delivery address, your date and a rough inventory. One vetted moving company checks the route and comes back with a real figure. Free, and no obligation to book.
Since Brexit the UK is a third country for customs, so a declaration is needed on every shipment even though nothing crosses an ocean. Used household goods normally clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief, which the mover handles as part of the job.
The relief expires. If your goods are still in UK storage more than twelve months after you registered your Austrian address, duty and 20 per cent VAT can become payable on the full value. If you are storing before shipping, say so at quote stage so the mover can plan around the deadline.
The Salzburg Altstadt is a UNESCO site and largely pedestrianised. Vehicle access is permit-controlled and timed, which means most deliveries into the historic centre are done by shuttle from a larger vehicle parked outside. That is a normal, expected stage here rather than an exception, so check it is priced in.
The Salzach splits the city, and the old streets on the left bank below the Mönchsberg are the tightest. Buildings there are old, stairwells are narrow, and lifts are rare. Measure the largest item and the stairwell before the survey.
Newer residential areas such as Liefering, Itzling and the suburbs towards Wals-Siezenheim are much simpler: proper parking, lifts, and vehicle access to the door. If you have a choice of address and you are shipping a large household, that difference is worth real money.
Almost never. Hiring a removal van and driving there yourself looks cheap until you add fuel, the Channel crossing, German and Austrian tolls, the motorway Vignette, overnight stops and one way hire fees. You also carry the customs declaration alone. A shared load with a professional removal company is usually cheaper and far simpler.
Accommodation fills, the centre clogs, and delivery slots get harder. Move either side of it if you can.
Freilassing and the Bavarian border villages are Germany, not Austria. It changes the customs job entirely.
Austria uses the euro, so moving money is part of moving home. We have helped customers with currency exchange in any currency for many years, through trusted partners, and it is included in what we do. Mention it on the quote form and we will make the introduction.
As a planning guide, a 5 cubic metre shared load to Salzburg runs about 850 to 1,320 pounds, a 15 cubic metre part load about 1,980 to 2,980 pounds, and a 30 cubic metre dedicated vehicle about 3,450 to 5,450 pounds. Ranges are compiled from published 2026 competitor route rates. Collections in Scotland and Northern Ireland typically add around 10 per cent.
Usually not. Used household goods clear duty free under Uebersiedlungsgut relief when you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve consecutive months, have owned and used the goods for six months, and import within twelve months of changing residence. Austrian VAT is 20 per cent if relief does not apply.
Yes, by roughly ten per cent on equivalent volumes, because of the extra distance to the Channel crossing. Aberdeen and Dundee sit at the top of that spread. It is a real difference rather than a mover marking you up, and it should be visible on the quote.
Ask what updates you get and from whom. On a dedicated vehicle the driver is usually contactable. On a shared load your goods sit at a consolidation point for part of the journey, so updates come from the office rather than the road. Neither is a problem if you expect it.
Six to eight weeks for a dedicated vehicle on a named day, and longer between June and September. A shared load can often be arranged in two to three weeks because you are giving up the fixed date in exchange. Allow a further week of slack behind the customs entry.
Ten standard removal cartons is about one cubic metre, a three seat sofa about two, and a double bed with mattress about two and a half. A studio comes out near five cubic metres, a one bedroom around ten and a two bedroom around fifteen. Most people overestimate.
Normally yes, and it is usually better that they do, because their dismantling is covered by their insurance and your own generally is not. Flat pack is worth a separate thought: much of it does not survive a second rebuild, so weigh shipping against replacing it in Salzburg.
Yes, and the wait is at the front rather than on the road. A dedicated vehicle leaves when you book it. A shared load leaves when the vehicle is full, which is why Salzburg deliveries on a shared load commonly run five to nine days against two to four.
Around 25 pounds a week for a typical three bedroom load, varying by whether the goods sit in the UK or Austria. The weekly rate is rarely the whole cost, so ask about handling in and out separately, and confirm the insurance position while stored.
If you can, yes. The Salzburger Festspiele runs from late July through August. Accommodation is full, the centre is congested and delivery access into the old town gets considerably harder. Moving either side of that window is easier and usually cheaper.
Completely. Freilassing and the Bavarian villages around Salzburg are in Germany, so the customs entry, the duty relief scheme and the registration process are all German rather than Austrian. Tell the mover the country as well as the town, because the two jobs are priced and papered differently.
