Dornbirn removals are the cheapest and quickest of any Austrian city move, and the reason is simple geography. Vorarlberg is the far western tip of the country, closer to Zurich than to Vienna, and about 1,050 km from London. Dornbirn is its largest city at around 50,000.
The Rhine valley here is effectively one continuous conurbation. Dornbirn, Hohenems, Lustenau, Feldkirch and Bregenz run into each other along the valley floor, with Switzerland on the far bank and Liechtenstein a few minutes south. A great many residents cross a border to work, most often into St Gallen, Zurich or Vaduz.
That cross-border pattern is the thing to flag at quote stage. If you are living in Vorarlberg but working in Switzerland or Liechtenstein, your residence is Austrian and the customs relief is Austrian, but your tax position is not, and people regularly confuse the two when describing the move. Be precise about where the goods are landing.
Vorarlberg is reached through southern Germany rather than over any Alpine pass, so the run is short and straightforward: the Channel crossing, then Belgium or France, then Germany to Lindau and across the border. No mountain passes, no tunnels, no Brenner toll.
It also means Vorarlberg loads often ride with Switzerland or southern Germany work rather than with Vienna work. If a mover tells you the next Austria departure is a fortnight away, ask specifically about their Swiss and Bavarian runs. Vorarlberg frequently sits on those.

Dornbirn itself is straightforward. It grew as a textile town and expanded through the twentieth century, so streets take a full-size vehicle, parking is manageable and lifts are common in the apartment stock. Marktplatz and the older core are compact but not severely restricted.
The hillside villages are the harder job. Addresses climbing towards the Bregenzerwald or up towards Ebnit involve steep, narrow approaches, and in winter they need the same care as a Tyrolean valley address. Confirm the altitude and the approach with the mover.
The border trap is the one that actually costs people money. Villages along the Rhine are Austrian on one bank and Swiss on the other, and Liechtenstein is minutes away. Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, so a delivery to St Margrethen is a wholly different job from one to Lustenau. Give the country, not just the postcode.
Almost never. Hiring a removal van and driving there yourself looks cheap until you add fuel, the Channel crossing, German and Austrian tolls, the motorway Vignette, overnight stops and one way hire fees. You also carry the customs declaration alone. A shared load with a professional removal company is usually cheaper and far simpler.

A vehicle is handled as a separate shipment from the household goods. You need a Grundlagenbescheid from a main Austrian customs office, the car must have been owned and used by you for at least six months, and registration triggers NoVA, the vehicle consumption tax. Tell the mover early.
Under about two cubic metres with no furniture, a pallet or box courier is usually cheaper and we would say so. Above that, or as soon as furniture is involved, a shared load with a proper crew wins on both price and handling.
Not the removal itself, but be precise about it. Your residence is Austrian, so the Austrian Uebersiedlungsgut relief and the Meldezettel deadline both apply, and the goods clear into Austria. Your employment and tax position across the border is a separate matter that the mover has no part in. Problems arise when people describe the move as a Swiss one because that is where the job is.
Distance and terrain. Vorarlberg is roughly 250 km closer to the UK than Vienna and around 500 km closer than Klagenfurt, and the route runs through flat southern Germany with no Alpine pass or tunnel toll. On a 30 cubic metre move that is worth several hundred pounds, and transit is a day or so shorter.
