🚢 How the matching service works

Household removals and movers from the UK to Ireland

International Removals Companies is not a removal company. We are a free matching service. You send us one enquiry and we connect you with one FIDI-certified partner mover for your UK to Ireland route. That mover calls you, looks over what you are moving and gives you a firm price. There is no charge for the service and no obligation to book.

Most comparison sites send your number to several firms at once. Your phone rings all day. We do it differently. We read your enquiry and connect you with a single moving company that fits your route and the size of your move. One call, one survey, one quote.

Every partner is FIDI FAIM certified. That is the main quality standard for international moving companies, independently audited by Ernst and Young every three years. Many are BAR members too. DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD, company 07425576, has run this service since November 2010. We have been a Working Member of AGM Group since 2010.

🚢 Ferry routes to Ireland

How your goods travel from the UK to Ireland

A move to Ireland goes by sea. There is no land route from Great Britain to the Republic, so the removal van crosses on a roll-on roll-off ferry from Wales. Three crossings carry most household moves.

Holyhead to Dublin Port

Irish Ferries and Stena Line. About 3 hrs 15 mins. Several sailings a day.

The main route. Suits Dublin, the east, the midlands and the north-west.

Pembroke to Rosslare

Irish Ferries. About 4 hours.

Lands in County Wexford. Suits Wexford, Waterford, Carlow and Kilkenny.

Fishguard to Rosslare

Stena Line. About 3 hrs 30 mins.

Also lands at Rosslare Europort. A second south-east option.

To reach Holyhead, the van runs along the A55 across North Wales. To reach Pembroke or Fishguard it takes the M4 and A40 through South Wales. Because the crossings are short and frequent, shared loads (groupage) are practical and well priced on the Ireland route.

💷 Removals to Ireland cost guide

What does a move to Ireland cost?

Cost depends on how much you move, the route, and access at both ends. A studio of boxes is a different job from a four-bed house. A Dublin delivery costs less than a rural Donegal one. The biggest lever is shared versus dedicated.

Single item or small load

One sofa, bed, wardrobe or a few packed boxes

From about £300 to £900

Best value on a shared load. Price varies with item size, delivery area and access.

Part load (a few rooms)

Studio to two-bed, sharing the van with other Ireland moves

From about £1,200 to £3,000

Cheaper than a dedicated van. Needs a flexible date. Transit about 1 to 3 weeks.

Dedicated van (full house)

Sole use of the van from the UK to Ireland

From about £3,500

Direct delivery, tighter timing. To Dublin often 1 to 2 days. Larger homes cost more.

Islands, far west or antiques

Hard-access, high-value or remote Irish deliveries

Priced after survey

Extra road time, crating or specialist handling needed before the price is final.

Rural Irish deliveries with narrow lanes or long driveways typically add £150 to £400. Stairs without a lift add crew time at both ends.

📄 Customs and Transfer of Residence

Irish customs: what applies since Brexit

This is the part people most often get wrong. The Republic of Ireland is in the EU. The UK is not. A move from Great Britain into the Republic is an EU import and needs a customs declaration. This has been the case since Brexit.

You do not normally pay tax on your own used belongings. Revenue, the Irish tax and customs authority, runs Transfer of Residence relief. It removes Customs Duty and the 23% Irish VAT on used personal goods if you qualify. You claim it on Form C&E 1076, filed by your mover with a valued inventory about two weeks before your goods arrive.

To qualify, you generally need to have owned and used the goods for at least six months and be moving your home to Ireland permanently. A PPS number, the Personal Public Service number, is the Irish tax and identity reference. You will need it for almost everything after you arrive, so get it early. If you do not claim the relief, the 23% VAT can apply.

One point that trips people up: the Common Travel Area covers people, not goods. It lets UK and Irish citizens live and work freely in each other's country. Your furniture and boxes still go through the customs process. The relief is what keeps the tax off, not the travel rules.

Note: the partner mover handles the shipment documents. Your eligibility for Transfer of Residence relief is yours to confirm with Revenue for your specific move date.

Currency: the Republic uses the euro

The Republic of Ireland uses the euro (EUR), not sterling. That matters for deposits, any charges at the Irish end, and anything you pay locally after you arrive.

It is also one of the differences from Northern Ireland, which uses the pound. If you are moving to the Republic, factor in the EUR/GBP exchange rate for larger Irish payments.

Access and Eircode checks

Access checks that affect every Ireland quote

Most quote surprises come from access, not distance. The drive and ferry to Dublin may be simple, but the move gets harder if stairs, lifts, parking or a narrow Irish street were not confirmed first. A Georgian flat in central Dublin with stairs and no lift takes longer to load than a house with a clear driveway. Give this detail when you enquire and the price will be accurate.

UK collection checks
  • Can large items be dismantled and rebuilt?
  • Do items fit through doors and stairwells?
  • Lift size: width, depth and weight limit
  • Parking or a loading bay near the door
  • Carry distance from door to van
  • Any building entry time limits
Irish delivery checks
  • Flat, house or rural townland address?
  • Eircode for the exact delivery location
  • Lift size for an upper floor
  • Street width for a removal van
  • Parking suspension needed in a city?
  • Gate, lane or driveway width
What to include in your enquiry
  • Full UK collection address with postcode
  • Full Irish delivery address with Eircode
  • Room list or inventory with rough sizes
  • Photos of large, fragile or awkward pieces
  • Floor level, lift, stairs and parking at both ends
  • Preferred date and how flexible it is
  • Whether storage is needed before delivery
  • Any dismantling, reassembly or packing needs

We connect you with one suitable FIDI-certified partner mover, not a list of removal companies. They review your items, access and Irish delivery area before they confirm the price. You get one call and one clear quote.

What FIDI FAIM means

FIDI FAIM is the main quality standard for international removal companies. Partner movers pass an independent audit by Ernst and Young covering more than 200 quality and money-handling criteria, repeated every three years. For a move that crosses an EU customs border with Transfer of Residence paperwork, that standard is the benchmark to look for.

Before you book, confirm: written quote with service scope and insurance, who files the customs paperwork, the access plan for both ends, payment terms and the move date.

Common questions about removals to Ireland

International removals to Ireland: common questions

How do household goods travel from the UK to Ireland?

By ferry from Wales. The main crossing is Holyhead to Dublin Port (Irish Ferries and Stena Line, about 3 hours 15 minutes). Pembroke to Rosslare (Irish Ferries, about 4 hours) and Fishguard to Rosslare (Stena Line, about 3 hours 30 minutes) serve the south-east. The removal van drives to the Welsh port, crosses, then delivers to your Irish address.

Do I need customs clearance to move to Ireland?

Yes. The Republic is in the EU and the UK is not, so a move from Great Britain is an EU import. Your goods need a customs declaration. Transfer of Residence relief on Form C&E 1076, via Revenue, removes import duty and the 23% Irish VAT on used belongings if you qualify.

Does the Common Travel Area remove customs?

No. The Common Travel Area covers people, not goods. It lets UK and Irish citizens live and work freely in each other's country, but your belongings still go through the customs process when they move from Great Britain to the Republic.

How much does a move to Ireland cost?

A small shared load runs from about £300 to £900. A part load of a few rooms runs from about £1,200 to £3,000. A full house on a dedicated van starts from about £3,500. The firm price depends on volume, route, access and packing level, confirmed by the mover after a survey.

How long does a move to Ireland take?

A dedicated van to Dublin is often one to two days from collection. A shared load takes one to three weeks, as it waits for the van to fill. Rural and far north-west deliveries add road time at the Irish end. Your mover gives a delivery window after the survey.

What is groupage and is it worth it for Ireland?

Groupage means your goods share a van with other people's loads. You pay for the space you use, so it costs less than a dedicated van. The Irish Sea ferries are short and frequent, so groupage works well here and is good value for smaller moves.

Why do movers ask for my Eircode?

An Eircode is the Irish postcode, a seven-character code unique to each address. Much of rural Ireland uses townland names rather than street numbers, so the Eircode is how the mover finds your door accurately. Always have it ready, especially for a rural delivery.
