Why a shared load to Austria waits for the vehicle to fill

A lorry costs roughly the same to run whether it is half full or full, so a mover who can fill it charges each customer less. What you give up is the collection date: a shared load leaves within an agreed window rather than on a day you choose.

Serving international removals, relocation and shipping between the UK and Austria. A part load means your goods share a vehicle with other households and you pay only for the space you use. It is usually 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than a dedicated vehicle. The trade is a collection week instead of a collection day, and five to nine days in transit.

We match you with one vetted moving company for your route, free. We are not a removal company and we are not a quote comparison service, so you get one mover, not ten sales calls.

A part load, also called a shared load or groupage, is the right answer for most moves to Austria under about twenty cubic metres. Rather than hiring a whole lorry, your goods travel with other people's on the same run, and the cost is split by the space each household takes.

The economics are straightforward. A lorry to Vienna costs roughly the same to run whether it is half full or full, so a mover who can fill it charges each customer less. That is why part loads there are easier to arrange than the country's size suggests: movers combine Austrian work with German drops on the same vehicle.

What you give up is control of the date. A part load leaves when the vehicle is ready, within an agreed window rather than on a day you choose. If your dates are fixed to the hour, a dedicated vehicle is the honest answer and you should expect to pay for it.

📦 Working out what you actually have

Estimating your volume

Almost everyone overestimates. As a rough guide, ten standard removal cartons is about one cubic metre, a three seat sofa is around two, and a double bed with mattress is about two and a half. A studio flat comes out near five cubic metres, a one bedroom around ten and a two bedroom around fifteen.

Get this roughly right before you ask for quotes, because volume is what the price is built on. A survey, whether in person or by video, usually reduces the figure rather than raising it, and it is worth doing on anything above about eight cubic metres.

At a glance

  • 10 removal cartons: about 1 m³
  • Three seat sofa: about 2 m³
  • Double bed and mattress: about 2.5 m³
  • Studio flat: about 5 m³
  • One bedroom: about 10 m³
  • Two bedroom: about 15 m³
💰 What a part load to the country costs

Part load prices by volume

Part load pricing there is close to linear up to about fifteen cubic metres, then the advantage narrows. Beyond roughly twenty five cubic metres a dedicated vehicle often costs the same or less, because your goods are loaded once instead of being handled at a consolidation point.

These are planning ranges for the main local cities, compiled in August 2026 from published competitor route rates. Vorarlberg comes in below them and Graz and Klagenfurt slightly above.

At a glance

  • About 5 m³: £850 to £1,400
  • About 10 m³: £1,300 to £2,000
  • About 15 m³: £2,000 to £3,100
  • About 20 m³: £2,600 to £3,900
  • Above 25 m³: compare against a dedicated vehicle
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland add about 10 per cent
⚖ When a part load is the wrong choice

The honest trade-offs

Part loads suit flexible people with ordinary household goods. They suit students, single movers, couples, anyone furnishing an apartment and anyone whose Austrian housing is not ready on a fixed date.

They suit some situations badly. If you are moving a full family home, if your delivery date is contractual, if the shipment includes something that should not be handled twice, or if you are going to a resort address in the middle of the season, the extra handling and the wider date window stop being worth the saving.

At a glance

  • Good for: under 20 m³, flexible dates, ordinary contents
  • Poor for: fixed dates, full family homes, fragile high-value items
  • Transit: five to nine days, sometimes longer in January
  • Your goods are handled at a consolidation point
  • Ask whether the price includes a shuttle stage at the far end

Questions people ask before booking

What is a part load removal to Austria?

Your goods travel on a vehicle shared with other households heading the same way, and you pay only for the space you occupy rather than hiring a whole lorry. It is also called a shared load or groupage. On volumes under about twenty cubic metres it is usually thirty to forty per cent cheaper than a dedicated vehicle.

How much does a part load there cost?

About 850 to 1,400 pounds for 5 cubic metres, 1,300 to 2,000 for 10, and 2,000 to 3,100 for 15. Vorarlberg comes in below those figures and Graz and Klagenfurt slightly above. Scottish and Northern Irish collections add roughly 10 per cent.

How long does a part load take to reach the country?

Commonly five to nine days door to door, against two to four for a dedicated vehicle. The extra time is the vehicle waiting to fill and stopping at more addresses. January can run longer because there are fewer departures after the Christmas peak.

How do I work out my cubic metres?

Ten standard removal cartons is roughly one cubic metre, a three seat sofa about two, and a double bed with mattress about two and a half. A studio flat comes out near five cubic metres, a one bedroom around ten and a two bedroom around fifteen. Most people overestimate, so a survey usually brings the figure down.

At what size does a dedicated vehicle become better value?

Around twenty five cubic metres, though it varies by destination. Above that the part load saving narrows and the extra handling at a consolidation point stops being worth it. Ask for both prices at that size rather than assuming the shared load is cheaper.

Will my goods be handled more on a part load?

Yes, and it is the main trade-off. Goods are typically loaded, consolidated with other shipments and loaded again, so there is one more handling stage than a dedicated vehicle. For ordinary household contents that is fine. For fragile or high value items it is a reason to consider sole use.

Can I choose the collection date?

You choose a window rather than a day. A collection week is normal on a part load, and that flexibility is exactly what makes it cheaper. If your date is fixed by a tenancy or a contract start, say so at quote stage and price a dedicated vehicle instead.

Is a part load suitable for a ski resort address?

Sometimes, but check the final leg. Resort addresses often need goods transferred to a smaller vehicle, and in season that stage is harder to schedule around a shared load's flexible window. Ask whether the shuttle stage is included in the quoted price.

Do I still get insurance on a part load?

Yes, and you should confirm the level before booking. Most movers will not insure owner-packed cartons for breakage, so if you are packing yourself, let the crew handle the fragile items. Ask what the excess is and whether cover is for replacement value or a fixed sum per item.
