International moving companies that already run the Sweden route

Internationell flytt till Sverige från Storbritannien

Sweden is a road and ferry country for household goods, not a container country. Almost everything that arrives from the UK travels by lorry, either as unaccompanied freight on the direct crossing to Gothenburg or overland through Denmark and across the Öresund. That single fact shapes the cost, the timing and the paperwork, and it is why a moving company that already runs the route quotes differently from one that does not.

The country is long. Malmö to Kiruna is a greater distance than London to Milan, and the practical difference between a delivery in Skåne and one above the Arctic Circle is measured in days rather than hours. Winter access matters in the north, ferry timetables matter on Gotland, and city centre parking rules matter in Stockholm and Gothenburg. International movers who work these routes plan around all of it as routine.

International Removals Companies is a free enquiry matching service operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD (company 07425576). It does not carry out removals and does not operate vehicles. Rather than ringing round international movers yourself, you tell us once and your enquiry goes to one vetted mover from our network who covers your route. They contact you, survey the move and confirm the quote. If they cannot take your dates, the enquiry passes to another mover in the network. Free to use, with no obligation until you accept.

Serving the whole country: relocation and shipping to every region of Sweden, from Skåne and Götaland through the Mälardalen and up into Norrland and Lapland.

🚢 Routes into Sweden

Shipping your goods to Sweden

There are two ways household goods reach Sweden from the UK, and the one you take changes the timing more than the cost. The direct crossing puts your goods on a vessel at Immingham and lands them at Gothenburg. The overland route runs down through France and Germany, up through Denmark, and crosses at the Öresund.

Which is better depends on where you are going. For Gothenburg, Borås and the west coast, the direct crossing is usually the shorter chain. For Malmö, Lund and the whole of Skåne, the overland route lands you almost at the door. For the far north, the difference narrows because the inland leg dominates either way.

Direct crossing

Immingham to Gothenburg

DFDS runs a roll on roll off freight service between Immingham and Gothenburg. Sweden is unusual among the Nordic countries in having a direct link of this kind at all. One qualification matters for planning: Immingham holds UK Border Force approval for freight only, so private passengers cannot sail. Your goods travel as unaccompanied freight while you fly or drive separately, which is a routine arrangement for overseas movers on this crossing. Confirm current sailing frequency with the operator when you book.

Overland, southern

The Öresund crossing

The overland route runs through France, Germany and Denmark, then crosses into Sweden. The Öresund bridge carries traffic from Copenhagen into Malmö, with the toll charged by vehicle length and type and paid on the Swedish side. The alternative is the short sea crossing from Helsingør to Helsingborg, operated by Öresundslinjen, roughly four kilometres and about twenty minutes, with departures throughout the day in both directions.

Onward legs

Gotland and the far north

Two destinations need a further leg planned in from the start. Gotland is reached by sea, with the mainland ferry terminal at Nynäshamn serving Visby, so the delivery date depends on a sailing rather than a road schedule. Norrland and Lapland involve long inland distances from any port, and winter conditions change both the timing and the vehicle. Deliveries to Kiruna, Luleå and Skellefteå are planned around the season, not around the map.

📄 Swedish customs

Tullverket, duty relief and what the paperwork asks for

Goods arriving from another EU country enter Sweden without duty, without VAT and without an import declaration. Goods arriving from outside the EU need customs clearance, and since Brexit that includes everything sent from the United Kingdom. The standard rate of Swedish VAT is 25 per cent, so the relief Tullverket offers on household goods is worth applying for carefully rather than casually.

To qualify you must have had your normal residence outside the EU for a continuous period of at least one year, and you must intend to live in Sweden for at least one year. The goods must already have been in your own or your household's use, and they must be imported within twelve months of the move. Applications are accepted up to six months before a planned move, which is worth knowing if you are organising the paperwork around a job start date.

Tullverket expects a packing list. Capital items such as vehicles, televisions, computers, alcohol and tobacco are itemised individually, while ordinary household effects can be grouped. Your matched mover can lodge the declaration on your behalf, which is the usual arrangement. Check the current requirements at tullverket.se before your goods leave the UK.

Sweden customs checklist

  • Confirm one year of normal residence outside the EU.
  • Confirm you intend to live in Sweden for at least a year.
  • Confirm the goods were already in your household's use.
  • Import within twelve months of the move.
  • Apply up to six months ahead if it suits your timing.
  • Complete the Försäkran för flyttsakstullfrihet declaration.
  • Prepare a packing list, capital goods itemised separately.
  • Plan around the twelve month restriction on selling or lending.
  • Register with skatteverket.se for your personnummer.
  • Check tullverket.se for current rules.
👥 How the matching works
Vetted removal crew loading household goods for an international relocation to Sweden

One enquiry, one match

We are not an international moving company ourselves and we do not run vehicles. We are a free matching service, so nothing is charged to you and nothing is charged to the mover for the introduction. You send one enquiry and it goes to a single vetted mover who covers your Swedish route. There is no inbox filling up afterwards.

Packing is part of the conversation from the start. The movers and packers in the network quote for a full pack, a part pack or a load only, and the choice changes both the price and the survey. Say which you want when you enquire.

Every mover in the network is checked before an enquiry ever reaches them. FIDI FAIM certification is the one worth understanding, because it is genuinely audited rather than self declared: the assessment is carried out by Ernst & Young against more than two hundred criteria, and it has to be renewed. Alongside it, network movers hold memberships including BAR Overseas, IAM, EUROMOVERS and FEDEMAC.

Currency exchange is included as part of the service through our partners, which matters when you are moving money for a deposit or a first rent payment. The people handling it are currency exchange specialists, there are no hidden fees, they hold five star consumer ratings, and the rates are competitive.

🏠 Arriving in Sweden

Registration, housing and the first few weeks

Registration goes through Skatteverket, and the personnummer issued on approval is the key to almost everything else: a bank account, BankID, a rental contract, a phone plan. A samordningsnummer, or coordination number, exists as an interim identifier for people who are not yet registered. Processing times vary by case and by office, so start early rather than planning around a fixed figure.

Housing takes planning in the larger cities. First hand rental contracts are allocated through queue systems, and waiting times differ enormously between cities and between areas within them. Many people arriving from the UK take a second hand contract first and join the queue on arrival. It is worth asking your employer what they can arrange, particularly if you are moving for an industrial or research post, since many handle international relocation for incoming staff as a matter of course.

Where people arriving from abroad tend to settle

Around 88 per cent of the Swedish population lives in a tätort, the statistical built up area defined by Statistics Sweden as a settlement of at least two hundred registered residents with dense building. Arrivals from abroad concentrate in the three big city regions, in the university towns, and increasingly in the industrial north.

Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö take the largest share. Uppsala, Lund and Linköping draw researchers and students. Södertälje has one of the highest foreign born shares in the country. In the north, large industrial projects around Skellefteå, Luleå and Boden have drawn substantial numbers of workers from outside Sweden, and those projects have had a turbulent few years, so it is worth checking the current position for any specific employer before committing to a town.

Sweden removals questions

Common questions about moving from the UK to Sweden

Do I pay duty and VAT on household goods entering Sweden?

Goods arriving from another EU country enter without duty, without VAT and without an import declaration. Goods from outside the EU, which since Brexit includes the UK, need customs clearance, and Tullverket can grant relief from both duty and VAT where the conditions are met. Swedish VAT runs at 25 per cent as standard, so the relief is worth applying for properly.

Can I sell my goods after Tullverket grants relief?

Not for twelve months, and not without telling Tullverket first. For a full year after relief is granted you may not sell, rent out, lend, give away or pledge the goods. If you need to, you must notify Tullverket and pay the duty and taxes that were relieved. Tullverket states there is no exemption from this rule.

What conditions does Tullverket set for relief?

One year of normal residence outside the EU, an intention to live in Sweden for at least a year, goods that were already in your household's use, and import within twelve months of the move. Applications are accepted up to six months in advance, which helps if the paperwork has to fit around a job start date.

Is there a direct freight route from the UK to Sweden?

Yes, and it is unusual among the Nordic countries. DFDS runs roll on roll off freight between Immingham and Gothenburg. Immingham is approved by UK Border Force for freight only, so private passengers cannot sail, which in practice means your goods travel unaccompanied while you fly or drive. The overland alternative crosses into Sweden by the Öresund bridge or the Helsingør to Helsingborg ferry.

How much do shipping and removals to Sweden cost?

Moving companies price a Swedish job on volume, access at both addresses, whether you take a part load or a dedicated vehicle, and the season. A northern delivery in February is planned differently from a Malmö delivery in June. We do not publish a figure, because a price produced before anyone has seen your inventory is a guess. The mover matched to your enquiry confirms it after surveying your goods and both addresses.

Do you carry out the removal yourselves?

No. International Removals Companies is a free enquiry matching service operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD. It is not an international moving company, it does not own vehicles and it does not carry out removals. Each enquiry is passed to one vetted mover from our network who covers the route, and that firm contacts you directly. If they cannot take your dates, the enquiry passes to another mover in the network.

Do I need a personnummer before my goods arrive?

Registration goes through Skatteverket via folkbokföring, and the personnummer issued on approval opens up banking, BankID and rental contracts. A samordningsnummer serves as an interim identifier beforehand. Processing times vary by case and office, so apply as early as you can rather than working to a fixed expectation.
