Why owner packed cartons to Austria lose breakage cover

Nearly every mover excludes owner-packed cartons from breakage claims, on the reasonable grounds that they cannot see what went in or how. If a box matters, either let the crew pack it or accept that a broken item inside is your loss.

Serving international removals, relocation and shipping between the UK and Austria. Full export packing typically adds 15 to 25 per cent to a move. The reason to pay it is not convenience, it is insurance: most movers will not cover owner-packed cartons for breakage, so anything you pack yourself travels at your own risk.

We match you with one vetted moving company for your route, free. We are not a removal company and we are not a quote comparison service, so you get one mover, not ten sales calls.

Packing is the part of an international move people underestimate most, in time and in consequence. A two bedroom flat takes an experienced crew most of a day. It takes an amateur working evenings the best part of a fortnight.

The commercial point matters more than the labour, though. Export packing is not the same as putting things in boxes. It means graded materials, correct box sizes, individual wrapping for fragile items and a numbered inventory that ties to the customs entry.

And it decides your cover. Nearly every mover excludes owner-packed cartons from breakage claims, on the reasonable grounds that they cannot see what went in or how. If a box matters, either let the crew pack it or accept that a broken item inside is your loss.

🛠 Three levels, and who each one suits

Full, part or owner packing

Full export packing means the crew arrives with materials and packs everything. Part packing means they handle the kitchen, glassware, pictures and anything fragile, and you do books, clothes and linen. Owner packing means you do it all and the crew loads sealed boxes.

Part packing is the sensible middle for most people. It covers the things that break and the things that are awkward to pack correctly, while leaving the bulk that is genuinely simple to you.

At a glance

  • Full packing: adds about 15 to 25 per cent to the move
  • Part packing: fragile items only, a common compromise
  • Owner packing: cheapest, and excluded from breakage cover
  • A two bedroom flat is about a day for a crew
  • Materials are usually included in a packing quote
📦 What goes in what

Materials and technique

Books go in small cartons and clothes and bedding in large ones. That sounds trivial until a crew has to carry a full book box down four flights of a Viennese Altbau stairwell. Plates travel on edge, never stacked flat. Glasses go in a cell divider, individually wrapped.

Pictures, mirrors and screens need purpose-made cartons or crates rather than blankets. Anything with a fragile finish or genuine value should be crated. Wardrobe cartons keep hanging clothes on their hangers and save the ironing at the other end.

At a glance

  • Books in small cartons, clothes in large
  • Plates on edge, glasses in cell dividers
  • Pictures, mirrors and screens in purpose cartons
  • Antiques, marble and art crated, not wrapped
  • Everything numbered and listed for the customs entry

Unpacking, debris and reassembly

Delivery is usually quoted in one of three ways: placed in rooms, unpacked, or unpacked with debris removed. The third is worth asking about, because an international move generates a surprising volume of cardboard and Austrian residential recycling arrangements are not designed for it.

Reassembly of beds and flat pack should be confirmed as included rather than assumed, and remember Ruhezeiten: most Austrian buildings observe quiet hours from about 10pm to 6am and all day Sunday, so an unpack that runs late is not an option.

At a glance

  • Placed in rooms, unpacked, or unpacked with debris removed
  • Confirm bed and flat pack reassembly is included
  • Cardboard removal matters more than people expect
  • Ruhezeiten stop work at about 10pm
  • Sunday delivery is not normally possible

Questions people ask before booking

How much does packing add to an the country move?

Full export packing typically adds 15 to 25 per cent to the total. Part packing, where the crew does fragile items and you do books and clothes, adds considerably less and is the common compromise. Materials are usually included in a packing quote rather than billed separately.

Will my insurance cover boxes I packed myself?

For loss, usually. For breakage, usually not. Nearly every mover excludes owner-packed cartons from breakage claims because they cannot verify what went in or how it was wrapped. If a box contains something that matters, let the crew pack that one even if you do the rest.

How long does packing take?

An experienced crew packs a two bedroom flat in about a day and a three bedroom house in one to two. Doing it yourself takes far longer than people expect, typically the best part of a fortnight of evenings for a two bedroom, which is worth weighing against the cost.

What should I pack myself to save money?

Books, clothes, linen and shoes. They are simple, bulky and low risk. Leave the kitchen, glassware, pictures, mirrors, screens and anything with a fragile finish to the crew, because those are the items that break and the ones your cover depends on.

Do I need special boxes?

Yes, and they come with a packing quote. Removal cartons are graded for weight, which supermarket boxes are not, and a box that collapses in transit takes everything above it down with it. Wardrobe cartons for hanging clothes and purpose cartons for pictures and screens both earn their cost.

Will the crew unpack at the Austrian end?

If you ask for it, and it is worth clarifying which version. Delivery can mean boxes placed in the right rooms, boxes unpacked, or boxes unpacked and the cardboard taken away. The third matters more than it sounds, because an international move produces a lot of packaging and Austrian residential recycling is not built for it.

Can they reassemble beds and furniture?

Normally yes, but confirm it is in the quote rather than assuming. Dismantling at the UK end and reassembly at the Austrian end are usually priced together. Flat pack is worth a separate conversation, since much of it does not survive a second rebuild.

Is there a time limit on delivery day?

In practice yes. Most Austrian residential buildings observe Ruhezeiten, quiet hours running roughly from 10pm to 6am and all day Sunday. A crew cannot carry furniture up a shared stairwell during those hours, so a late-running unpack has to stop rather than push on.
