The customs side is genuinely different from a European move. There is an export declaration leaving the EU, and at the Australian end a mandatory B534 Unaccompanied Personal Effects Statement plus a biosecurity assessment of every single shipment. Neither is optional and neither is difficult, provided the preparation is done before the container is packed rather than after.

Vorarlberg, Tyrol and the west more often run north to Hamburg or Rotterdam, which are further but carry more sailings and more consolidation options.
Ask which port your quote assumes. A southern routing can shave time off the sea leg; a northern one may find a sailing sooner. Neither is automatically better, but a quote that has not settled it has not settled the timing.
Every shipment of household goods arriving separately from you is an Unaccompanied Personal Effects consignment, and it needs a B534 statement. It is a four page document administered by the Australian Border Force with biosecurity input from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and it must be completed in English.
To bring goods in free of duty and GST you must have owned and used them for at least twelve months before they arrive. There also has to be a clear connection between your own travel and the shipment: the concession cannot be used to import belongings several months after you have already settled in Australia. If the goods travel before you do, expect to show an airline ticket, a work contract or a university acceptance letter.
Declaring risk items honestly matters more than most people realise. Failure to declare can lead to prosecution, and for non-citizens a serious or deliberate breach can mean visa cancellation and a three year re-entry ban.
Every consignment entering Australia is assessed by DAFF before release, and many are inspected. You pay for the inspection time, so how well the goods were prepared translates directly into the bill.
An Austrian household carries a particular risk profile. Timber furniture is common here, and untreated or infested timber can require fumigation. Carved and rustic pieces are harder to clean than flat modern furniture. Ski boots, hiking boots, poles and bindings arrive with soil in the treads. Garden and terrace furniture from a chalet or a house with a garden is a standard inspection trigger. Wicker, hides, leather Trachten and anything with animal or plant material all need declaring.
The practical advice from the department is simple and worth following: clean everything that has been outdoors with a stiff brush and soapy water until no soil, seed or plant debris remains, declare risk items on the B534, and pack them together in one or two clearly marked boxes with the box numbers recorded. That last step alone can cut the inspection time substantially, because the officer knows exactly where to look.
Volume decides the container. Below about ten cubic metres a shared container is almost always right, with your goods consolidated alongside other households. A three bedroom home at around thirty cubic metres fits a 20ft container; a large family home needs a 40ft.
These are planning ranges built from European long haul benchmarks and should be treated as a sanity check rather than a quote. Add the road leg from the country to the port, and budget separately for biosecurity inspection and any treatment, because neither can be quoted with certainty in advance.
