Sea transit to Malaysia is running at six to ten weeks as of August 2026, not the four to six weeks most quotes still state, because the majority of carriers are routing around the Cape of Good Hope rather than through Suez. Moving house to Malaysia therefore means planning around a longer crossing than the published figures suggest. Household goods travel as a part load, sharing a container, and clear at Port Klang, Penang Port or the Port of Tanjung Pelepas.
There is no road or rail option to Malaysia from the UK or Europe. Everything arrives by sea or by air, and the choice for a household move is between sharing a container and taking one to yourself. Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan each clear differently and should be treated as separate route types.
Share the collection address, the exact Malaysian delivery address, rough volume, move date and access notes at both ends. The state you are entering matters as much as the country.
One vetted moving company checks the arrival port, the sailing schedule, the inland leg, your customs position and whether a lorry can physically reach the delivery address.
That firm confirms the surveyed volume, the timetable, the packing standard, the clearance paperwork and the delivery plan before you decide whether to book.
Packing for a sea crossing is a different job from packing for a move across town. Your goods sit in a steel box for six to ten weeks, cross the equator twice, and pass through temperature swings that turn the air inside the container to water on the walls. Domestic wrapping does not survive that.
Export packing means the crew wraps for moisture as well as for impact. Upholstery goes in sealed bags rather than blankets, timber gets moisture barriers, and anything with a mirror or a glass panel is crated rather than padded. Ask what standard the quote is written to, because export packing and domestic packing are two different prices for two different jobs.
This is the part people do not expect. The inventory your packers write as they load is the same document that clears your goods in Malaysia. A list reading "box 14, kitchen items" is a list that gets opened and inspected. A list that itemises contents clears faster.
So the quality of the packing crew decides the speed of your clearance, not just the condition of your furniture. Read the inventory before you sign it. What the declaration has to satisfy is set out on Malaysian customs and import relief.
Any solid wood packing material entering Malaysia has to meet the ISPM 15 standard, which means heat treated or fumigated and stamped accordingly. A crate knocked together from untreated timber is a quarantine problem at the port.
Established international movers and packers use certified crating as a matter of course. A firm that does not know what ISPM 15 is has not shipped to this part of the world.
Your goods share a container with other people's and you pay for the cubic metres you actually occupy. This is the cheaper option below roughly fifteen cubic metres, which covers most flats and part households, and it is what most people on this route use.
What you give up is a fixed sailing date. The container waits at a warehouse until enough other consignments bound for the same Malaysian port fill it. That wait is shorter to Port Klang, which takes most European sailings, and longer to Penang Port or anywhere needing a second sea leg to Borneo.
A twenty foot or forty foot container for your goods alone, loaded at your home and not opened again until it reaches you. It makes sense from around fifteen cubic metres, and it skips the warehouse stripping step at the Malaysian end.
Air freight runs five to ten working days and is priced on weight rather than volume. Too expensive for furniture, but sensible for the things you need in the first fortnight. A common pattern is to air a couple of boxes and send everything else by sea.
Which one you use is decided by where you are moving to, not by preference. Port Klang handles more than thirteen million containers a year and takes most European sailings.
| Port | Serves | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Port Klang | Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Kajang, Seremban, Ipoh | Malaysia's largest port, on the Malacca Strait in Selangor. Split between mainland and Pulau Indah terminals. |
| Penang Port | Penang Island, Sungai Petani, Alor Setar | Serves the north. Fewer direct European sailings, so consolidation waits run longer than Port Klang. |
| Port of Tanjung Pelepas | Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri, Batu Pahat | Serves the south. A major transhipment port, so sailing frequency is good. |
| Second sea leg | Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Bintulu, Labuan | No road across the South China Sea. Goods tranship at a Peninsular port or wait for an infrequent direct sailing. |
Malaysian import requirements are set by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and change without notice, so confirm the current position with the moving company before shipping. For the United Kingdom side, including Transfer of Residence relief on a return move, see HM Revenue and Customs.
Sabah and Sarawak each run their own immigration authority and issue their own employment and residence passes. Arriving from Peninsular Malaysia you pass an immigration check, and permission to live and work in Kuala Lumpur does not automatically extend to either state.
Because customs relief on used household effects depends on the status you actually hold, a declaration prepared against a federal pass for goods entering Sarawak is the wrong declaration. The shipment does not bounce. It waits, and storage accrues while it is corrected.
Labuan is different again: a Federal Territory and a duty free island. Easier coming in, and harder later, because moving goods from Labuan to the mainland is assessed as a fresh entry into Malaysia proper rather than a domestic move.
Each destination has its own arrival port, its own inland leg and its own delivery access, and those three things change the timing and the price more than the distance between towns does. Pick the destination closest to your new address rather than the nearest large city.
Use these when your question is about how the move works rather than where it is going.
Use these where the collection city changes the plan, the access or the price.
Moving money is part of moving house. Currency exchange comes as part of the service through trusted partners, and it is worth raising on the enquiry form rather than sorting out afterwards.

Six to ten weeks by sea as of August 2026, and a few more working days to clear. A full container sits at the shorter end and a part load at the longer end. Figures of four to six weeks published elsewhere described the route before most carriers moved from Suez to the Cape of Good Hope.
A part load means your goods share a container with other shipments and you pay for the space you use. It is the cheaper option below roughly fifteen cubic metres, which covers most flats and part households. The cost of that saving is timing, because the container waits until it is full before it sails.
Port Klang for Kuala Lumpur and the centre, Penang Port for the north, and the Port of Tanjung Pelepas for Johor and the south. Your moving company decides this based on your delivery address, not on preference.
Used personal effects can enter with relief from duty, subject to conditions on ownership period and on the visa or pass you hold. The conditions differ for returning Malaysians, employment pass holders and Malaysia My Second Home participants. Your moving company confirms which applies to you before shipping.
Around two weeks longer than Peninsular Malaysia. There is no road across the South China Sea, so goods for Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Bintulu and Labuan need a second sea leg or a less frequent direct sailing.
It is possible but rarely worth it. Malaysia requires an Approved Permit for vehicle imports, and duty and excise on the value of the car can exceed what the same model costs to buy locally. Most people sell before they leave.
Four to six weeks before you want the goods collected, and earlier if you are moving between June and September when both shipping schedules and Transfer of Residence processing run slower.
A survey of what you are sending, packing at your address, a road leg to a consolidation warehouse, the sea crossing, customs clearance on arrival and delivery inland. Six to ten weeks by sea as of August 2026, plus several working days for clearance, and about two weeks more for Sabah, Sarawak or Labuan.
In practice, no. Packers and movers is the usual phrase across South and South East Asia for what British customers call a removal company, and international movers and packers means a firm that handles export packing and overseas shipping rather than local moves. The company we pass your enquiry to does both.
On a full packing service, yes. The crew wraps and boxes the contents, inventories them and loads the container, which matters on this route because a badly packed timber piece has eight weeks of tropical humidity ahead of it. A part packing service, where you box the small items yourself, costs less and is worth asking about.
