More of this city's housing sits inside protected and listed buildings than anywhere else on this route, and that decides what can physically leave your flat before anything else does. Permission to alter a listed building is not something that can be sought on the morning of the move.
Goods travel south to Felixstowe or Southampton, because no Scottish terminal runs regular Asian services, then six to ten weeks at sea as of August 2026 to Port Klang in Selangor, Penang Port in the north or the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor. Listed New Town and Old Town property is the hard case: nothing may be unbolted, removed or temporarily altered to get a piece out, so the building is the constraint and it does not negotiate. A suburban house is the straightforward case, with driveway or street access, ground floor loading and a labour figure that should look materially lower than either of the others.

Road closures, pedestrianised streets and parking restrictions run for weeks. A vehicle that could reach your door comfortably in June may not be able to get within several streets of it in August.
It is a solvable problem with notice and an expensive one without. If your move falls in that window, raise it at the first conversation rather than assuming the moving company will know. Households here travel as a part load, sharing a container and charged by the cubic metre.
