A great many people moving here are taking delivery of a newly completed property, and new developments do not always complete on the date the brochure promised. Developers give an expected completion, and the gap between expected and actual on a large development is measured in months rather than weeks. If the written date is close to your sailing, assume storage will be needed and price it now. If it is comfortably clear, you have lost nothing by asking.
If the property is not ready, the goods clear customs on arrival and go into a warehouse until you can take them. That is a normal, planned arrangement rather than an emergency.
What turns it into an emergency is arranging it late. A container left standing at the port accrues demurrage at rates that make warehouse storage look trivial, and the negotiation happens while you are jet-lagged in a hotel. Ask for storage in transit quoted on the original estimate even if you expect not to need it, and agree how it is charged by the week.
The other reason to raise it early is that it changes the packing. Goods going straight into a house can be unpacked on delivery. Goods going into storage for an unknown period want the export standard properly applied, with moisture barriers on timber rather than blankets.
