This is the only route out of Malaysia that does not need a ship. The two countries share a land border, so household goods can travel by road from a Malaysian address to a Thai one in days rather than weeks. That single fact changes the cost, the timing and the paperwork against every other move we handle. Everywhere else in Malaysia the answer is a part load in a shared container by sea. Here it is not.

A sea move from Malaysia means consolidation, a vessel, a discharge port and an inland leg at the far end. Six to ten weeks, and a date nobody will commit to. Overland removes all of it.
A trucking company loads at your Malaysian address, drives north, clears the border and delivers. Depending on the distance and the crossing, that is a matter of days. It is also cheaper per cubic metre on shorter runs, because you are not paying for port handling at both ends. What you gain in speed you spend in paperwork, because a road crossing means two customs authorities in one journey rather than one at each end of a long wait.
Bukit Kayu Hitam to Sadao is the main west coast crossing on the north south expressway, the usual choice from Kuala Lumpur, Penang Island or Alor Setar.
Padang Besar sits further west in Perlis and carries rail as well as road.
Rantau Panjang to Sungai Golok is the east coast crossing, the natural route from Kota Bharu.
The thing people underestimate is that this is not a domestic move with a longer drive. Your goods leave one customs territory and enter another, and both events need declaring.
On the Malaysian side, goods you brought in under personal effects relief are being exported. On the Thai side they are an import, assessed on Thai rules against whatever visa or status you hold there. Relief you claimed on entering Malaysia does not follow you across. If you came in under a residence scheme, that ends at the border too, and the residence schemes have no Thai equivalent that carries over.
Keep the paperwork from your original import. A dated inventory and the Malaysian entry declaration make the Thai side considerably easier, and they are much harder to reconstruct later than to file now.
Overland is not automatically the answer. Two cases where it is not.
Ask for both priced. On this route the two options are genuinely close often enough to be worth the question, which is not true anywhere else in Malaysia.
A container at sea is stacked once and left alone for two months. A lorry is loaded, driven, stopped at a border, possibly opened for inspection, and driven again. The stress on your goods is different in kind rather than degree.
Vibration over a long road journey loosens what a sea crossing would not, so joints and fixings matter more here than humidity does. Anything you would not want opened at a border post should be packed so it can be, and put where it can be reached.
