Goods reach the island on a second sea leg after transhipment at a larger port rather than on a direct European service. A shared container is the norm, priced on the cubic metres your goods paying for the cubic metres they occupy.
On most routes the shipping paperwork stops mattering once the goods are unpacked. Here it does not, because a later onward move puts the same goods in front of a customs authority for a second time and the questions are about where they came from and when.
So keep the packing inventory, the bill of lading and the entry documentation somewhere you will find them in five years. It costs nothing now. Reconstructing them later, from another country, after the moving company that handled it has moved on, costs a great deal.

There is a practical consequence for what you send, too. Anything you are confident will stay with you for good, or will eventually go home to Britain rather than to Peninsular Malaysia, raises no question at all. It is the middle category that needs thought: furniture bought here, or goods you might reasonably take to Kota Kinabalu or the mainland on a later posting. Those are the items worth a moment's planning at the outset rather than a scramble afterwards.
