A great many people moving to Johor Bahru are not going to work there. They are going to live there and earn in Singapore, crossing the strait each morning, because housing costs a fraction of the Singaporean equivalent. That arrangement has a customs consequence almost nobody expects.
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas sits about thirty kilometres west on the Malacca Strait, handling a large volume of transhipment traffic, which means vessels call frequently and a shared container fills reasonably fast. Singapore is across the Johor Strait by the Causeway or the Second Link at Tuas. The crossing itself takes six to ten weeks as of August 2026.
The economics of living in Johor and earning in Singapore are straightforward. The paperwork is not, and this is where it goes wrong.
Malaysia grants relief on used personal effects based on the status you hold in Malaysia. If your work authorisation is Singaporean and your Malaysian standing is something else entirely, a long stay arrangement or a dependant pass or a residence scheme, the declaration has to be prepared against the Malaysian one. People assume a Singapore employment pass carries weight at the Malaysian border. It carries none.
So the useful thing to tell a moving company is not where you will be working. It is which Malaysian pass you will hold when the container arrives. It is the single question that most often has to be re-answered after a Johor quote has already been issued, and re-answering it after the goods have sailed is expensive rather than merely irritating.
If you are entering on a residence arrangement rather than employment, the relief conditions differ again. See what the declaration has to show and the residence schemes.
Tanjung Pelepas is the natural arrival port for Johor, but it is not the only one used, and a quote naming Port Klang is not necessarily wrong.
| Arrival route | Serves | Inland leg |
|---|---|---|
| Port of Tanjung Pelepas | Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri and the south | About thirty kilometres, under an hour |
| Port Klang, then road south | Used when the sailing schedule favours it | Around three hundred and thirty kilometres by expressway |
| Air freight into Senai or Kuala Lumpur | Urgent items only, charged by weight | Short, but not viable for furniture |
Ask which routing your quote assumes and what it would cost the other way. A shorter wait for a sailing can be worth more than a shorter drive, and only one of those two shows up on a map.
The city covers a wide area with very different delivery conditions inside it, and the same nominal address can mean two entirely different days of work.
The developments around Iskandar Puteri are new and planned, with wide access roads and driveways a lorry can reverse onto. The older centre near the Causeway is congested, narrow and busy with cross-border traffic for much of the day.
Johor households also run larger than Kuala Lumpur ones, because landed housing is common here. More moves cross the fifteen cubic metre threshold where a full container starts to pay, so ask for both options priced rather than assuming a part load is automatically cheaper.
Living in Johor and earning in Singapore means ringgit and Singapore dollars alongside whatever you are converting from. Included through trusted partners, who are experts in currency exchange, charge no hidden fees, hold 5-star consumer ratings and quote a competitive exchange rate.
It changes the customs side rather than the shipping. Your goods enter Malaysia and clear against the Malaysian pass you hold, so a Singapore employment pass carries no weight at Tanjung Pelepas. Tell the moving company which Malaysian status you will hold.
Usually the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, about thirty kilometres west. Some shipments come through Port Klang instead and travel down by road when the sailing schedule favours it, which is normal but adds an inland leg. Ask which your quote assumes.
Six to ten weeks by sea as of August 2026, and a few more days to clear. Tanjung Pelepas handles a large volume of transhipment traffic, so vessels call frequently and the consolidation wait on a part load is shorter than to a quieter port.
More often than a Kuala Lumpur household would. Landed housing is common in Johor and more moves here cross the fifteen cubic metre mark where sole use starts to pay. Ask for both priced rather than assuming a part load is automatically cheaper.

We are not a removal company. Your enquiry goes to one vetted moving company from the AGM Group network, agm.group, that clears into Johor rather than only into the Klang Valley. That distinction matters more here than the price does, because a firm quoting Johor from a Kuala Lumpur desk will not know which port has space this month.
Malaysian import requirements are set by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and change without notice, so confirm the current position with the moving company before shipping. For the United Kingdom side, including Transfer of Residence relief on a return move, see HM Revenue and Customs.
Send your collection address, the Johor delivery address, your move date and which Malaysian pass you will hold. One vetted moving company checks the routing and the customs position before contacting you.
