Best areas to live in Malaysia, and what moving crews find there

International arrivals gather into a handful of places in Malaysia for reasons that have almost nothing to do with each other. The capital draws corporate postings, Penang draws retirees, Johor draws people who work in Singapore, and Miri draws the oil industry. Where you land changes the arrival port, the inland leg and what a delivery crew can physically do.

Published expat population figures for Malaysia are hard to rely on, because they count work pass holders, scheme participants, students and dependants differently depending on who compiled them. What follows is about geography and access rather than counts.

International movers and packers delivering to an expatriate area of Malaysia

Four populations, four different shipping problems

Area Who settles there What it means for a shipment
Kuala Lumpur Corporate postings, concentrated in Mont Kiara, Bangsar and Ampang Port Klang is close, but the building is slow. Service lift booked ahead and restricted hours
Penang Island Retirees and long stay residents, north coast and George Town Fewer direct sailings so a longer wait, and heritage streets a container cannot enter
Johor People earning in Singapore and living across the strait Tanjung Pelepas is close and frequent, but relief follows your Malaysian pass, not your Singapore one
East Malaysia Energy sector families in Miri, Bintulu, Labuan and Kota Kinabalu Separate state entry control and a second sea leg, adding roughly a fortnight

Name the town

Not the region. Ipoh and Malacca are each roughly two hours from a port and neither is near the capital in any useful sense.

Name the property type

A condominium, a shophouse and a landed house are three different delivery days at the same nominal address.

Name the state

Particularly for Sabah and Sarawak, where entry control and relief are assessed separately from Peninsular Malaysia.

🏙 The quieter choices, and what a relocation consultant hears about

Ipoh and Malacca draw a different crowd again

Ipoh has grown as a retirement choice largely because of its period bungalows, which are generous in a way that nothing in the capital is. That has a practical consequence: furniture that would never enter a Kuala Lumpur condominium goes in here without being dismantled.

Malacca attracts a heritage crowd who will accept a shophouse that a sofa cannot enter. Both towns are inland or without a container terminal, so goods clear at Port Klang or Penang Port and arrive by road, which is straightforward but should be named exactly at survey rather than described as near the capital.

Households across all of these generally travel as a part load, sharing a container and paying for the cubic metres occupied, priced as set out on shared container pricing.

🛡 Who delivers to the address you choose

We do not carry out removals. Your enquiry goes to one vetted moving company from the AGM Group network, agm.group, that covers the area you are moving to. Naming the exact town rather than the nearest large city is what gets you a quotation rather than an estimate.

What export packers are asked

Questions people ask about where to settle

Which part of Malaysia has the most international residents?

Kuala Lumpur by a wide margin, concentrated in the condominium districts of Mont Kiara, Bangsar and Ampang. Penang Island is second and draws a noticeably different group, weighted toward retirees and long stay residents rather than corporate postings.

Why do so many people live in Johor and work in Singapore?

Housing costs a fraction of the Singaporean equivalent and the crossings make it workable. Your goods still clear Malaysian customs against your Malaysian pass, though, which surprises people who assume their Singapore employment pass counts.

Where do energy sector families go?

Miri, Bintulu and Labuan in Sarawak and the Federal Territory, and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. All sit behind separate state entry control and a second sea leg, which adds about a fortnight and changes the paperwork.

Should I trust published expat population figures?

Treat them carefully. They mix work pass holders, scheme participants, students and dependants differently depending on who compiled them, and most figures circulating on removals websites are years old and copied between sites.

Malaysian import requirements are set by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and change without notice, so confirm the current position with the moving company before shipping. For the United Kingdom side, including Transfer of Residence relief on a return move, see HM Revenue and Customs.
