Furniture travelling on its own, rather than with a household

Plenty of moves to Sweden are not house moves. People send inherited pieces, furnish a flat they have taken on, ship the contents of one room for a fixed term posting, or move a few things they could not bring on a flight. Furniture on its own is a normal job and it is priced differently from a household relocation.

The practical questions are about the items rather than the property. Does the piece dismantle, and if so does anyone need to reassemble it at the far end. Is it solid wood, veneered, upholstered or glass. Is it an antique, in which case crating rather than blanket wrapping is usually the answer. Are the dimensions such that it will go up a Swedish stairwell at all, which is a real question in older blocks where lifts were retrofitted.

Swedish homes are also drier in winter than British ones, because of how they are heated. Solid wood furniture that has spent its life in a damp UK house can shrink and open at the joints over a first Swedish winter. It is not a transit problem and no mover causes it, but it is worth knowing so you do not blame the removal for something the radiator did.

International Removals Companies is a free enquiry matching service operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD (company 07425576). It does not carry out removals and does not operate vehicles. One vetted mover handles your enquiry, chosen because they already run this route. They contact you, survey the move and confirm the quote, and if they cannot take your dates the enquiry passes to another mover in the network.

🚢 How it travels

Shipping furniture to Sweden without a full household move

Small consignments almost always travel as part of a shared vehicle, because a dedicated lorry for three items makes no sense. A moving company that handles furniture regularly will suggest it without being asked. That means the same trade as any part load: a lower price in exchange for a delivery window rather than a named day.

The route is the same as for any household goods. Either the direct Immingham to Gothenburg freight crossing, or overland through Denmark and across the Öresund into Malmö. Which is used depends on the destination and on what is running when your consignment is ready.

📌 What to consider
Check the customs point

New furniture is not used furniture

Tullverket's relief applies to goods that were already in your household's use. Furniture bought new to furnish a Swedish home does not meet that condition and is treated as an ordinary import, with duty and 25 per cent VAT potentially due. This catches people out and it is worth resolving before you buy.

Straightforward

Dismantling and reassembly

Beds, wardrobes, tables and shelving usually come apart, and a mover can dismantle at collection and rebuild on delivery. Say whether you want that, because it changes both the crew time and the volume the piece occupies in transit.

Say so early

Antiques, glass and high value pieces

Blanket wrapping suits ordinary furniture. Antiques, marble, glass topped tables and anything of unusual value are better crated, which costs more and has to be built in from the quote rather than added later. Declare the value for insurance at the same time.

📝 Before you enquire

Measuring before you book

The two measurements worth taking are the piece and the route it has to travel. Height, width and depth of the item, and the narrowest point it must pass through at the delivery address, which is usually a lift car, a stairwell turn or a doorway.

This matters more in Sweden than people expect. Lifts in older Stockholm and Gothenburg blocks were fitted long after the buildings went up and many will not take a wardrobe or a three seat sofa. Sending those measurements with the enquiry avoids a piece arriving in the country and then not going into the flat.

Swedish customs, including the Tullverket relief conditions and the twelve month restriction that follows, is set out in full on the Sweden removals hub.

Questions

Can I send furniture to Sweden without moving house?

Yes, and it is a common job. Single items, the contents of one room, or inherited pieces are all handled routinely. Small consignments usually travel as part of a shared load rather than on a dedicated vehicle, which keeps the cost proportionate to what you are actually sending.

Do I pay duty and VAT on furniture sent to Sweden?

It depends whether the furniture counts as your used household goods. Tullverket's relief applies to goods already in your own or your household's use before the move. Furniture bought new to furnish a Swedish home does not meet that condition and may attract duty and Swedish VAT at 25 per cent. Resolve this before buying rather than afterwards.

Will the movers dismantle and reassemble my furniture?

Usually, if you ask for it. Beds, wardrobes, tables and shelving normally come apart, and dismantling often reduces the space the item occupies in transit as well as making it easier to get into the property. Say at the enquiry stage whether you want reassembly at the far end, because it affects crew time.

How is antique furniture protected in transit?

Ordinary furniture is blanket wrapped and secured. Antiques, marble, glass and high value pieces are better crated, which has to be quoted from the start rather than added later. Declare the value at the same time so insurance is arranged properly.

What if my furniture will not fit the Swedish stairwell?

It happens, particularly in older Stockholm and Gothenburg blocks where lifts were retrofitted into buildings that never had them. Measure the item and the narrowest point on the route into the flat, and send both with your enquiry. It is far cheaper to find out before the piece leaves the UK.
