Stockholm is built across fourteen islands at the point where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and the water is the first thing that shapes a delivery here. Bridges carry almost every route into the centre, so a lorry that would move freely through a flat inland city spends a good part of the day queuing for a crossing.
The bigger problem is the buildings. Large parts of Östermalm, Vasastan and Södermalm are late nineteenth century stone blocks, and the lifts fitted into their stairwells afterwards are small. A wardrobe or a three-seat sofa often will not go in one.
