Helsingborg sits at the narrowest point of the Öresund, about four kilometres from Helsingør on the Danish side. The ferry between the two runs constantly, the crossing takes around twenty minutes, and there are departures throughout the day in both directions. For a load coming overland through Denmark it is often the quickest way into Sweden, and it avoids the bridge toll at Malmö.
The city itself has one feature that catches movers out. The Landborgen escarpment runs behind the shoreline and splits Helsingborg into a lower town by the water and an upper town on the ridge above it. The two are connected by steep roads, steps and a lift cut into the rock. A delivery address in the upper town is a different proposition from one on the harbour front, even when the two are a few hundred metres apart on a map.
Helsingborg is also where the E4 begins. The motorway that runs the length of Sweden to Haparanda on the Finnish border starts here, and the E6 passes through on its way from Trelleborg up to Gothenburg and Oslo. For a city of its size it is unusually well connected.
