What travels well. Books, clothes, kitchen equipment, bedding, files, tools, sports kit, anything that packs into a standard carton and is not fragile beyond reasonable packing.
What does not. Furniture is the dividing line. A wardrobe, a sofa or a bed is not a box, and once furniture is involved you want a part load instead. Ask for both quotes if you are unsure which side of the line you fall on.
How it is priced. Per box, usually with a minimum. That means the cost scales with what you send, so ten boxes cost roughly half what twenty do. A removal lorry does not work that way, which is why box shipping is cheaper for small volumes and worse value once you pass a certain point.
Where the crossover sits. Somewhere around a small van load. Past that, a part load usually wins. The mover will tell you honestly which is cheaper for your list, and it is worth asking rather than assuming.
Boxes go by road or by consolidated sea freight, and the choice mostly comes down to how quickly you need them.
By road. Boxes travel as part of a consolidated load through Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. For Jutland destinations like Aarhus, Aalborg and Esbjerg the lorry runs straight up the E45 with no crossing. For Copenhagen and the rest of Zealand there is the Great Belt bridge, which is why a Copenhagen delivery sometimes costs a little more than a Jutland one.
By sea. The DFDS Immingham to Esbjerg freight ferry runs six times a week at around 18 and a half hours, and it is well suited to consolidated cargo. There is no passenger ferry between Britain and Denmark, so if you are travelling separately you will be flying or driving via the Channel regardless.

Ask the mover whether they supply cartons. Many do, and buying the right size is usually cheaper than paying to ship air in the wrong one.
Since Brexit the UK sits outside the EU, so boxes from Britain need Danish customs clearance the same as a full household move. The authority is Toldstyrelsen, the Danish Customs Agency.
If you are moving your normal residence to Denmark, the same relief conditions apply: at least 12 consecutive months living outside the EU, goods arriving no later than 12 months after you move and no earlier than six months before, and no lending or selling them for 12 months after import. Two documents are needed, one filed by the carrier and a declaration of personal property, form 12.024, that you submit yourself.
The situation that catches people out. If you are not transferring your residence, and are simply sending boxes to someone in Denmark or to a property you already have, the relief does not apply. Duty and Danish VAT at 25% may be payable on the declared value. Be honest about the value and the reason for the shipment. Understating it to avoid charges is where problems start.
Alcohol and tobacco are excluded from the relief entirely. Do not put them in.
