Songkhla is the old lagoon town and the provincial capital, built on a sand spit between the Thale Sap and the Gulf. The Sino Portuguese quarter along Nang Ngam is protected, and the town runs on fishing, the university and the port rather than on trade.
Shipments land at Laem Chabang and clear Thai customs there. The road leg is roughly 1150 kilometres, about fifteen hours. Thale Sap is the largest lagoon in Southeast Asia and it shapes every road here, because the town sits on the spit that closes it off.
