Koh Tao is twenty one square kilometres of granite headland and dive schools, and it certifies more open water divers each year than almost anywhere on earth. There is no airport and no bridge, so every single thing on the island arrived on a boat, including the pickup trucks.
Shipments land at Laem Chabang and clear Thai customs there. The road leg is roughly 750 kilometres, about ten hours plus a long ferry. Handling is what drives the price here, not distance. Each consignment is broken down, loaded, unloaded and reloaded, and that labour is charged whether the crate weighs ten kilos or two hundred.

The resident population is built almost entirely around diving. Instructors, dive shop owners, and the hospitality businesses that serve them. There is a long standing British and Scandinavian presence among the instructors. Almost nobody ships a full household here, because rentals are furnished and the handling cost makes it uneconomic.
The island's wet season peaks in November and December, later than the Andaman coast, and rough seas suspend the cargo service at short notice in those months. February to April is the calmest window. Ferry capacity tightens over the December to January peak.
No boat serving the island takes a loaded lorry, so consignments are broken into manageable crates at Chumphon and carried across on the cargo service. Once landed at Mae Haad everything transfers to a pickup. The tracks up to Chalok and over to the eastern bays are steep, part concrete and part dirt, and in places a laden pickup needs a second run.
