Storage at the UK end means your goods never leave, or leave later. It suits a fixed-term posting, an uncertain Danish address, or anything you are not sure you want in Denmark at all. The advantage is that you have not paid to move it yet. The disadvantage is that it is not with you and shipping it later means a second, smaller and proportionally more expensive consignment.
Storage at the Danish end means the goods make the journey once and wait near their destination. It suits a known address with a later handover date. The advantage is one shipping cost and quick release when you are ready. The disadvantage is that you have paid to move things you may not want.
The rule of thumb. If you know you want it in Denmark eventually, ship it and store it there. If you are not sure, store it in the UK. The expensive mistake is shipping everything, storing it in Denmark, then shipping some of it home again.
For a fixed-term posting with furnished accommodation, UK storage plus a small part load is usually far cheaper than moving a household twice.
Storage often looks like an extra cost and is actually a saving. Four situations where that is true.
Furnished accommodation. If the Danish flat comes with furniture, storing your own in the UK and shipping a part load costs less than shipping a household and paying to keep furniture you cannot use.
Fixed-term postings. Two or three years in Denmark rarely justifies moving everything. Store the bulk, take what you need, and the return journey is smaller too.
Handover gaps. Danish rental handovers do not always fall on the day you leave the UK. Storage bridges it without you paying for an emergency solution booked in a panic.
Route timing. A shared load leaving the UK for Zealand crosses the Little Belt and the Great Belt and arrives on a window rather than a date. If your Copenhagen handover is fixed, storage at the Danish end near Copenhagen Malmo Port removes the mismatch. For Jutland, where the E45 runs straight up with no crossing, timing is easier to predict and storage may not be needed at all. The DFDS Immingham to Esbjerg freight ferry, six sailings a week at around 18 and a half hours, is another way to tighten the arrival window.
Selling later. If you are keeping a UK property or deciding what to do with it, storage buys the time to decide without your possessions dictating the timetable.
Against that, storage is a running cost with no end date attached, which is exactly why it is worth setting one at the start.

One thing storage genuinely can affect, and it is worth flagging.
Toldstyrelsen's residence transfer relief requires that goods arrive in Denmark no later than 12 months after you move, and no earlier than six months before it. Storing goods in the UK for an extended period can push you past that window.
If your goods arrive earlier than six months before the move, you must lodge security for the duty and VAT. If they arrive more than 12 months after, the relief no longer applies at all unless the authority accepts a reason.
The same shape applies coming back. HMRC requires goods to be brought into the UK within 12 months of moving, and will consider waiving that where exceptional circumstances prevented it, though a lack of funds or space in your new home is not considered an exceptional circumstance.
So if you are storing for a fixed-term posting and expect to ship the remainder later, check the dates against the relief window before you commit. It is a straightforward thing to get right in advance and an expensive one to discover afterwards.
Remember also that the declaration itself is two documents. The carrier files the customs clearance declaration, and you separately complete a declaration of personal property, form 12.024, and submit it to Toldstyrelsen yourself. If the goods leave storage in two batches, ask the mover how that is handled, because it is not automatic.
