Denmark has several working ports and they are not interchangeable.
Aarhus. Denmark's largest commercial port, handling more than 70% of the national container market. If your destination is anywhere in Central or North Jutland, this is usually the answer, and for a container move it puts your goods on the ground with the shortest onward road leg of any option.
Fredericia. The second largest container port, with deepwater berths at 15 metres and over 84,000 TEU handled in the first half of 2025. Well placed for the Triangle Region, south Jutland and, over the Little Belt, Funen.
Esbjerg. The largest Danish port by tonnage, 9.3 million tonnes in 2022, and the Danish end of the only direct UK sea link. For west Jutland it is unbeatable on road distance.
Copenhagen Malmo Port. Serves the capital region and Zealand. If your destination is Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Roskilde or anywhere on Zealand, routing through a Jutland port means crossing the Great Belt by road afterwards, so CMP usually wins.
Aalborg, Kalundborg, Koge and others. Working ports handling regional traffic. Not container terminals in the same sense, but relevant for specific destinations.
The rule of thumb is simple: land the container as close to the final address as the shipping route allows, because road miles at the Danish end cost more per mile than sea miles.
Three mechanisms, and the right one depends on volume far more than destination.
Sole use container. Your goods alone in a 20ft or 40ft container. Nothing else travels with them, nothing waits for anything. Suits a full household and anything where you would rather not share a load. The most expensive per cubic metre if you cannot fill it.
Groupage, or shared container. Your consignment shares space with others heading the same way. Substantially cheaper, and the trade is a wider delivery window, because the container waits until it is full and then follows the schedule of the whole load. For a flexible date this is usually the sensible answer.
The Immingham to Esbjerg freight ferry. DFDS runs six sailings a week, around 18 and a half hours, carrying unaccompanied freight. A removal trailer goes on at one end and comes off at the other. It is not a container service and it is not a passenger service, and it suits a road-based move that wants to skip a long continental drive.
There is no passenger ferry between Britain and Denmark. The last one stopped in 2014, so you will be flying or driving via the Channel whatever your goods do.

A freight quote and a removals quote are different products, and comparing them directly is how people get caught out.
Port to port is not door to door. A cheap freight rate may end at the Danish quayside. Getting the container from there to a house in Silkeborg, unloaded and carried in, is a separate job. Ask what the quote covers at both ends before comparing.
Customs clearance. Since Brexit, goods from Britain need Danish clearance through Toldstyrelsen. The carrier files the clearance declaration. You separately complete a declaration of personal property, form 12.024, and submit it yourself. Ask whether the freight quote includes the carrier's side.
Demurrage and storage. If the container sits at the port waiting for paperwork or for you to be ready, that costs. It is one of the commonest unexpected charges in international freight and it is entirely avoidable with the paperwork done in advance.
Unloading and access. A 40ft container cannot get down a residential street in central Copenhagen, or through a gate in Gentofte, or anywhere near Dragor old town. The goods transfer to a smaller vehicle. That is normal, and it needs to be in the quote.
Insurance. Marine cover is not automatic and per-item limits apply. Declare anything of high value separately.
Everything above assumes household goods. Commercial freight is a different regime and it is worth being clear about the line.
Household goods moving with you as part of transferring your residence may qualify for relief from Danish duty and 25% VAT under Toldstyrelsen's conditions. Trade stock, commercial equipment and goods for sale do not. They are a normal import with duty and VAT payable, and they need commodity codes and a commercial declaration.
Toldstyrelsen specifically excludes commercial vehicles and equipment for a trade or profession from residence relief, although genuinely portable tools are fine.
If you are moving a business rather than a home, or shipping stock alongside your belongings, say so at the enquiry stage so it can be declared correctly. Mixing the two on one declaration is where problems start.
