Denmark operates a breed-specific ban. Confirm your dog is not one of Denmark's banned breeds before proceeding with any planning.
We are deliberately not reproducing the list here, and that is a considered decision rather than an evasion. Breed lists change, breed naming varies between countries, and a dog can be assessed on appearance rather than on paperwork. A list copied onto a removals website is exactly the wrong source for a decision this serious.
Check the current position with the Danish authorities or a Danish vet, using your dog's actual breed and any crossbreed history. Do it before you book anything, before you give notice, and before you pay a deposit on a Danish property.
If there is any doubt at all about how your dog might be assessed, get it resolved in writing in advance. The consequences of arriving with a dog that cannot legally enter are severe and fall entirely on the owner.
Cats and ferrets are not subject to breed restrictions.
This is the part that has changed recently and catches people who moved a pet before.
Since 22 April 2026, EU pet passports are no longer accepted for UK residents travelling to EU countries unless the owner's main residence is inside the EU. Animal Health Certificates have replaced them as the recognised document for UK-based travellers.
The certificate must be issued by a registered vet, obtained no more than 10 days before travel, and is currently valid for up to six months for both outward and return journeys. Rabies vaccination and microchipping remain mandatory for any certificate to be issued.
Two sequencing points that people get wrong:
The microchip must come before the rabies vaccination. If the microchip is implanted after the rabies vaccination, the vaccination does not count and the animal must be revaccinated, with a further 21 day wait. That is weeks lost for an avoidable ordering error.
Allow 21 days after a primary rabies vaccination. A primary vaccination must be administered at least 21 days before travel. If your pet already has a valid booster with no lapse in coverage, the process can be completed in as little as two to three weeks.
The maximum number of pets that may be moved for non-commercial purposes is five in a single vehicle, and the animal must travel with its owner and under the owner's direct responsibility. If it does not, it becomes a commercial movement with different and stricter requirements.

Separate from the paperwork, there is the journey, and it does not go with the furniture.
By road with you. The most common option for Denmark and usually the least stressful for the animal. Channel crossing, then through Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Check the specific crossing operator's pet policy, because they differ, and note that the pet travels with you rather than with the removal lorry.
By air. Faster and more regulated. The animal travels in the hold as excess baggage or cargo, in an IATA-compliant crate. Pets travelling as cargo must meet IATA Live Animals Regulations for crate size, construction and labelling. Book early, because hold space for animals is limited and summer heat restrictions apply on many routes.
By specialist pet transporter. A separate trade from removals. If the animal cannot travel with you, this is usually the answer, and it costs accordingly.
Not with the removal. A removal lorry is not a suitable environment and no reputable firm will carry a live animal. Your mover moves your belongings. The pet travels separately, and the two need coordinating rather than combining.
There is no passenger ferry between Britain and Denmark, so the sea route is not an option for travelling with an animal. The DFDS Immingham to Esbjerg service, six sailings a week at around 18 and a half hours, carries unaccompanied freight only.
Plan the driving leg realistically. For Jutland destinations like Aarhus, Aalborg and Esbjerg, the E45 runs straight up from the German border with no crossing. For Copenhagen and Zealand there is the Little Belt and then the Great Belt bridge on top, which adds time. An animal in a car for that long needs breaks planned in, and the extra crossing is worth knowing about when you work out the schedule.
A workable sequence, running backwards from the move date.
Three to four months out. Check the breed position. Confirm an ISO-compliant microchip is in place and was implanted before the rabies vaccination. If a primary vaccination is needed, book it.
One to two months out. Book the travel, whether that is air cargo, a crate on a ferry crossing with you, or a specialist transporter. Options thin out quickly in summer.
Around a month out. Primary rabies vaccination if needed, allowing the 21 day wait.
Within 10 days of travel. Animal Health Certificate issued by a registered vet. This window is short and non-negotiable, so the appointment should already be booked.
On arrival. Denmark does not require quarantine for dogs, cats or ferrets arriving with compliant documentation. Pets that do not meet the requirements may be refused entry or quarantined at the owner's expense.
Once you are living in Denmark, register the animal locally as required and make sure the microchip details are recorded correctly against your new address.
Your household goods travel under an entirely separate process. The carrier files the customs clearance declaration with Toldstyrelsen and you complete a declaration of personal property, form 12.024, yourself. The pet paperwork and the customs paperwork are unconnected and neither covers the other.
