Suzhou holds one of the largest foreign populations of any Chinese city that is not a provincial capital, and it does so on the strength of a single planned district. It also has a canal old town of protected gardens and stone bridges that is close to undeliverable by lorry. Two cities in one municipality.
One vetted mover from our network handles the job, matched for Yangtze Delta coverage. Suzhou sees enough international traffic that the local trade is genuinely experienced, which is not true of every city this size.
Almost everything clears at Shanghai and comes west by road, roughly ninety minutes outside peak traffic. Taicang, Suzhou's own port on the Yangtze, handles some feeder and regional traffic but is rarely the route for a household shipment from Europe.
Suzhou has no deep sea container port of its own and does not need one. Shanghai is ninety minutes east on the expressway, and the volume of traffic between the two means the road leg is routine, frequent and cheap by inland standards.
Your container clears at Yangshan or Waigaoqiao, then travels west. Some movers bring the full box to the address. Others tranship into a smaller vehicle at a Suzhou depot, particularly where the destination is in the old town or an older residential lane.
Taicang, on the Yangtze in the north of the municipality, is Suzhou's own port. It handles a substantial amount of feeder, regional and coastal traffic. For a household shipment coming from Europe it is rarely the route, though it occasionally appears on a quote and is not wrong when it does.
The practical consequence of sitting so close to Shanghai is choice. If a sailing to Shanghai suits your timing better than one to Ningbo, or vice versa, the difference to a Suzhou address is an hour of driving. That flexibility is worth more than it sounds when you are trying to line a container up with a tenancy date.
Suzhou's foreign population is concentrated to a degree that surprises people who have not been.
Suzhou Industrial Park, east of the old town, is a planned district developed jointly with Singapore and it shows in every detail relevant to a removal. Wide roads laid out on a grid, compounds designed with vehicle access, working service lifts, space to unload, and building management that understands what a moving crew needs. Several international schools sit inside it, which is why most families with children end up here. It is among the easiest deliveries anywhere in China.
Suzhou New District, west of the centre, is the older technology zone. Similar in character though less uniformly planned, with a mix of compound housing and standalone blocks. Access is generally good.
The old town is a different proposition entirely. It is a conservation area of canals, classical gardens and lanes that were laid out for foot traffic and boats. Height restrictions mean no towers and no service lifts. Several sections are pedestrian only. Some addresses are reached over humpback stone bridges with steps, which a barrow cannot cross loaded. Deliveries here are hand carried, sometimes for a considerable distance, and occasionally the only sensible approach is by water.
Few international residents live in the old town, but some do, drawn by exactly the qualities that make it difficult. If you are one of them, the survey is essential rather than advisable.
Kunshan sits immediately east, between Suzhou and Shanghai, and functions as part of the same housing market for many families. It has its own page.
Suzhou prices close to Shanghai, with the short road leg added. The Industrial Park keeps most deliveries efficient, which holds the average down. The old town is the outlier and it is a substantial one.

Clearance happens at Shanghai, not Suzhou, so your paperwork goes to the port rather than to your local office. You need a valid residence permit, a full valued inventory and your passport details. Shanghai clearance is among the quicker operations in China, which works in your favour.
The national rules are the same across mainland China, so the detail on permits, restricted goods and the cultural relics rule is set out in full on the China removals and shipping page. Read that before you start packing, particularly the section on items made before 1949.
A lot of departures from Suzhou are onward postings rather than repatriations, because the Industrial Park's employers move people around the region. Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Korea are all common destinations, alongside Europe and North America.
For Britain, apply for Transfer of Residence relief before the goods leave. Suzhou has a serious trade in silk, embroidery and classical furniture, much of it modern and perfectly exportable. What needs care is anything genuinely old. Pieces from before 1949 require an export certificate, and carved furniture in particular is worth having assessed.
A move usually means moving money too, whether that is a deposit on a Suzhou flat or funds coming back the other way. We have helped customers with currency exchange in any currency through trusted partners for many years, and our partners can help with the money side of your move. Mention it on the form and it gets included.

The whole of this group clears at Shanghai or Ningbo, so a mover running a delta service can often combine deliveries in the same week.

It has Taicang, on the Yangtze in the north of the municipality, which handles feeder, regional and coastal traffic. For a household shipment from Europe the container almost always clears at Shanghai instead and travels ninety minutes west by road.
Six to eight weeks door to door by sea. That is roughly thirty to thirty five days sailing, a few working days clearing at Shanghai, and then the short road leg. Shanghai clears faster than most Chinese ports, which helps the overall timing.
Because it was planned that way. It was developed jointly with Singapore, laid out on a grid with wide roads, compounds designed around vehicle access and working service lifts throughout. Building management understands what a moving crew needs. It is among the easiest deliveries anywhere in China.
Often not. The old town is a conservation area of canals, gardens and lanes laid out for foot traffic and boats. Height limits mean no lifts, several sections are pedestrian only, and some addresses are reached over humpback stone bridges with steps that a loaded barrow cannot cross.
The Suzhou Industrial Park, east of the old town. Several international schools sit inside it, the housing was built for this population and the access is straightforward. The New District to the west is the other common choice, older and slightly less uniform.
Either works, and the difference to you is about an hour of driving. That flexibility is genuinely useful when you are trying to line a container up with a tenancy start date, so ask which sailing suits your timing rather than assuming the nearer port is automatically right.
Kunshan sits immediately east, between Suzhou and Shanghai, and functions as part of the same housing market for a lot of families. It has its own page. The routing and the clearance are effectively identical, with a slightly shorter drive from the port.
A valid residence permit, a complete inventory with values and your passport details. Clearance takes place at Shanghai rather than Suzhou, so your paperwork goes to the port. The goods should be used personal effects arriving as a single shipment within the permitted window.
Modern silk, embroidery and reproduction classical furniture export without difficulty, and Suzhou has an excellent trade in all three. Anything genuinely old is different. Pieces from before 1949 need an export certificate, and carved furniture is worth having assessed before you commit to shipping it.
