Movers have the shortest run from port anywhere in the delta

Kunshan sits directly between Suzhou and Shanghai and has the shortest road leg from port of any city in this part of China. It also holds the largest concentration of Taiwanese business and residents anywhere on the mainland, which shapes the housing, the schools and the moving trade alike.

We match you with one vetted mover from our network covering the delta. Kunshan is close enough to Shanghai that many firms treat it as a Shanghai suburb, which is broadly fair for logistics and slightly misleading about the housing.

Everything clears at Shanghai, and the drive west is around an hour or less depending on the district. Huaqiao, on the eastern edge, is closer to central Shanghai than large parts of Shanghai itself.

Quick answer: Kunshan clears at Shanghai and has one of the shortest final legs in China, under an hour to most addresses. Allow six to eight weeks door to door by sea.

The shortest run from port in the delta

There is not much complexity to a Kunshan routing, and that is the point. Your container clears at Yangshan or Waigaoqiao and drives west for under an hour. To Huaqiao, on the eastern edge, it is less than that.

The short leg matters more than it sounds. Every additional hour of road time adds cost, adds risk of a missed delivery window, and adds handling if a transhipment is needed. Kunshan has almost none of that. It is among the cheapest final legs in China for a city of its size.

Two things follow. First, if a delivery date is tight, Kunshan gives you more room than most addresses to recover from a delayed vessel. Second, a mover running a Shanghai delivery the same week can often fit a Kunshan drop alongside it, which sometimes shows up as a lower price if you ask.

Shanghai's metro reaches Huaqiao, crossing a provincial boundary to do so, which is unusual in China and tells you something about how integrated the two places are. For a household move it means a lot of residents commute into Shanghai and treat Kunshan as an outer district rather than a separate city.

Development Zone compounds, Huaqiao and the water towns

Kunshan's international housing is heavily shaped by who lives here.

The Kunshan Economic and Technological Development Zone in the east holds the manufacturing and much of the compound housing that goes with it. Electronics and precision engineering dominate. The compounds were built for a foreign workforce, with service lifts, planned roads and space to unload. Straightforward delivery.

Huaqiao, on the boundary with Shanghai, is the newest and most residential of the districts. It has grown fast on the back of the metro connection, with modern towers and compound housing aimed at people working in Shanghai. Access is good and the drive from port is the shortest of all.

Yushan, the central district, is the older town core. Conventional mid and high rise with lifts in the newer blocks and not always in the older ones. Streets are tighter but manageable.

The water towns are a different matter. Zhouzhuang is the famous one and Jinxi is the quieter alternative, both within the municipality, both conservation areas built around canals and stone bridges. Vehicle access is severely restricted, several areas are pedestrian only, and some addresses are genuinely reached on foot or by boat. Very few people move house into them, but if you are one, say so at the survey stage because it is not a normal job.

The Taiwanese community is the defining social fact here. It is the largest such concentration in mainland China, it has been established for decades, and it supports its own schools, clinics and services. For a move it means the local trade is thoroughly experienced with cross strait and international shipping, and that arranging things in Mandarin is straightforward.

Planning bands for a Kunshan shipment

Kunshan prices at or slightly below Suzhou, which makes it one of the better value delta destinations. The short road leg is most of the reason and the compound housing is the rest.

Lower band

Boxes and part loads

Plan for around £250 to £950

Single postings on technical contracts, of which there are many here.

Middle band

Shared container space

Plan for around £1,200 to £3,200

Apartment moves into Huaqiao or a Development Zone compound.

Upper band

Sole use container

Plan for around £3,400 to £8,000

Family relocations, generally corporate and school driven.

What pushes a Kunshan quote up

  • A water town address, where vehicle access is severely limited
  • Older Yushan blocks without a lift
  • Peak traffic on the Shanghai expressway lengthening an otherwise short run
  • Summer humidity requiring crating for instruments and artwork
  • Storage if a tenancy start slips behind the vessel

What brings it back down

  • The shortest road leg from port of any delta city
  • Delivering into a Development Zone or Huaqiao compound
  • Sharing a mover's Shanghai delivery week where timing allows
  • Flexible dates so shared container space becomes available
  • Recovery room in the schedule if a vessel runs late

📄 Customs clearance and the paperwork behind it

Clearing your shipment into Kunshan

Clearance is at Shanghai, so your paperwork goes to the port rather than to Kunshan. You need a valid residence permit, a full valued inventory and your passport details. Shanghai is among the quickest clearance operations in China, which shortens the overall timeline.

The national rules are the same across mainland China, so the detail on permits, restricted goods and the cultural relics rule is set out in full on the China removals and shipping page. Read that before you start packing, particularly the section on items made before 1949.

Have these ready

  • ✓ Valid residence permit
  • ✓ Passport and visa details
  • ✓ Full inventory with values
  • ✓ Your Kunshan delivery address in Chinese
  • ✓ Export certificates for any older pieces
The journey in the other direction

Shipping out of Kunshan

A large share of departures here are onward moves within Asia rather than to Europe, given the composition of the local population. Those routes run frequently from Shanghai and the local trade knows them thoroughly.

For Britain, apply for Transfer of Residence relief before the goods leave. If your route is elsewhere in Asia, check the arrival country's own relief scheme early, because most have one and most require the application before the goods land. Anything made before 1949 needs a Chinese export certificate regardless of where it is going.

Quick answer: apply for Transfer of Residence relief with HMRC before your goods leave Kunshan, keep a complete inventory, and have anything made before 1949 assessed for an export certificate.

Questions about shipping to Kunshan

Common questions about moving to and from Kunshan

How far is Kunshan from the port?

Under an hour by road from Shanghai's terminals, and less to the eastern districts. It is the shortest final leg of any city in the delta, which makes it one of the cheaper deliveries and gives you more room to recover if a vessel runs late.

Is Kunshan effectively part of Shanghai?

For logistics, close enough. Shanghai's metro reaches Huaqiao, crossing a provincial boundary to do so, and many residents commute in daily. Administratively it sits under Suzhou in Jiangsu, and the housing market and schools are its own.

Where do most foreign residents live?

The Development Zone in the east, where the compound housing was built for the manufacturing workforce, and Huaqiao on the Shanghai boundary, which has grown fast on the metro connection. Both have modern compounds with service lifts and easy vehicle access.

What about the water towns?

Zhouzhuang and Jinxi are both in the municipality and both are conservation areas built around canals and stone bridges. Vehicle access is severely restricted, several areas are pedestrian only, and some addresses are reached on foot or by boat. Very few people move house into them.

How long does shipping from the UK take?

Six to eight weeks door to door by sea. Roughly thirty to thirty five days sailing, a few working days clearing at Shanghai, then the short drive. Shanghai clears faster than most Chinese ports, which helps the overall timing.

Does the Taiwanese community affect my move?

Practically, yes and helpfully. It is the largest concentration in mainland China, established for decades, with its own schools and services. The local moving trade grew up around it, so international and cross strait shipping is routine work and arranging things in Mandarin is straightforward.

Can I share a delivery with a Shanghai move?

Sometimes. A mover running Shanghai deliveries in the same week can often fit a Kunshan drop alongside, because the detour is small. It is worth asking whether that is available, since it occasionally shows up as a lower price.

Where does clearance happen?

At Shanghai, not Kunshan, so your paperwork goes to the port. You need a valid residence permit, a complete inventory with values and your passport details. The goods should be used personal effects arriving as one shipment within the permitted window.

I am moving on to Taiwan or Japan rather than Britain. Is that covered?

Yes, and those are among the busier routes out of Kunshan given who lives here. Check the arrival country's relief scheme early, because most require the application before the goods land. Anything from before 1949 still needs a Chinese export certificate whatever the destination.
