Ningbo moves more cargo by tonnage than any other port on earth, which is a strange fact about a city most British people have never heard of. For a household move it means one thing above all: whatever you are shipping, the sailing exists.

The Hangzhou Bay Bridge matters if any part of your move connects to Shanghai. Thirty six kilometres of bridge replaced a long detour around the head of the bay, and it means a Ningbo arrival can serve an address on the Shanghai side without an extra day of driving. Occasionally the reverse is useful too, where a Shanghai sailing suits your timing better than a Ningbo one.
One local point that affects nothing operationally but explains a lot of the traffic. Ningbo is the ancestral home of a large and long established overseas Chinese business community, and a good share of the personal shipping through this port moves along those family routes rather than towards Europe.
Ningbo splits between a modern new district and a much older core, and the difference on delivery day is stark.
Yinzhou is the newer southern district and the current commercial centre. Wide roads, planned compounds, service lifts, room for a vehicle at the entrance. If your employer is arranging housing, this is most likely where it lands, and it is comfortably the easiest delivery in the city.
Haishu, the historic centre, is denser and older. Lanes narrow as you approach the Moon Lake area, some blocks predate lifts entirely, and parking near an entrance often needs arranging with the local management office. It is pleasant to live in and slower to move into.
Jiangbei holds Ningbo's Old Bund, the former foreign settlement on the north bank. It is worth knowing that this predates the better known Shanghai Bund by a couple of decades. The riverside buildings are low rise and protected, streets are narrow, and delivery there means a carry from wherever the lorry can legally stop.
Beilun itself has housing, mostly serving the port and the manufacturing around it. Access is straightforward and you are minutes from the terminal, though it is a working district rather than a residential one by choice.
Ningbo's manufacturing base, moulds, appliances and textiles, means a lot of short term technical postings. Those tend to be part furnished flats and shared container shipments rather than full household moves.
Ningbo sits at the cheaper end for mainland China. Frequent sailings keep freight rates competitive and the road leg is short. The variable that bites is weather, because a typhoon delay can add storage and a rebooked delivery to a quote that looked settled.

Beilun clears personal effects without difficulty when the inventory is complete and valued. You need a valid residence permit and your passport details. Give some thought to humidity at the packing stage, because goods can sit on a subtropical quayside for several days before collection.

Departures here often follow a contract rather than a school year, which spreads the load across the calendar and makes booking easier than in Shanghai or Beijing. The port's frequency works in your favour on the way out as much as the way in.
For Britain, apply for Transfer of Residence relief before the goods leave and keep the inventory precise. Zhejiang has a strong trade in older furniture and porcelain, so anything from before 1949 needs assessing for an export certificate before it is packed rather than after.
