Write Baden AG. Otherwise your furniture may head for Germany.
Baden is a thermal spa town and engineering centre on the Limmat, in the canton of Aargau. It also shares its name with a considerably better known German spa town and a whole German region, which makes the address the first thing to get right.
The river runs through the town and the crossings in the centre are limited, so which bank your address is on can change the approach entirely. Send the full street address rather than the postcode alone, which is good practice here anyway given the name. The name means baths, and it is used for that reason in more than one country. Baden-Baden sits in south west Germany, the region of Baden-Württemberg surrounds it, and there is a Baden in Austria as well. Any of those is a plausible reading of an address that says only Baden.
Swiss practice solves it with the canton code. Write Baden AG, add the postcode, and the ambiguity is gone. It takes two characters and it prevents the one mistake on this delivery that would genuinely send a consignment to the wrong country.
With that settled, Baden is a comfortable town to deliver into. It sits on the Limmat between Zurich and the Aargau capital, on the main road axis, with ordinary streets outside a compact old quarter.
Baden also appears as Baden AG and Aargau. Whichever version you searched for, this is the same city and the same page. Give the mover the address exactly as it appears on your Swiss lease.
The thermal springs have been used since Roman times and the spa quarter is still a feature of the town, but Baden is not primarily a resort. It has a long standing heavy engineering presence and the international employment that comes with it.
That means a steady flow of technical and engineering arrivals, frequently on contracts, frequently with a relocation policy behind them. Fixed start dates are common, which pushes towards a dedicated vehicle rather than a shared one.
The town also works as a Zurich commuter base, being a short run down the main axis, which brings full household moves alongside the contract arrivals.
The historic centre is compact, sits above the Limmat below the castle ruins, and has the usual narrow lanes and restrictions of a Swiss old town. It is a small area and a reserved standing point is arranged with the commune in advance.
The river divides the town and the crossings in the centre are limited, so which bank your address is on can change the approach. Send the full street address rather than the postcode alone.
Away from the centre this is an ordinary and comfortable town to work in, with post war and later housing and lifts that will generally take a wardrobe.
This is the most avoidable mistake anywhere in Switzerland and it is worth being blunt about. An email that says only Baden, with no postcode and no canton, can reasonably be read as a town in Germany, a region in Germany or a town in Austria.
A driver working from a hand written note, or a carrier planning a route from a spreadsheet, has no way to tell. That is how consignments end up several hundred kilometres from where they should be.
The fix is trivial. Baden AG, plus the four digit Swiss postcode, on everything. If you are sending the address by email, write Switzerland at the end of it as well.
If your Swiss address is not Baden itself, one of these may be closer.
Aarau · Zurich · Olten · Basel · Lucerne · Winterthur · · Cham · Delémont · Dübendorf all Swiss towns
Of everything a mover can take on, these three matter most for Baden. Movers serving this area meet these three repeatedly.
The UK route and the frontier.
What a fixed start date does to the number.
Packing, which most relocation policies include.
Because Baden alone is genuinely ambiguous. Baden-Baden sits in south west Germany, the region of Baden-Württemberg surrounds it, and there is a Baden in Austria too. A driver working from a note has no way to tell which you mean. Add the canton code and the Swiss postcode.
It is the most avoidable error in the Swiss set. A carrier planning a route from a spreadsheet, or a crew working from a hand written address, can reasonably read Baden as a place several hundred kilometres away in another country. Write Baden AG, the postcode, and Switzerland.
Not once the address is settled. It sits on the Limmat on the main Zurich to Basel axis with a short leg from either, and outside the compact old quarter the streets are ordinary and the lifts will generally take a wardrobe.
Compact, above the river below the castle ruins, with the narrow lanes and restrictions usual in a Swiss old town. It is a small area and a reserved standing point is arranged with the commune in advance. The rest of the town is comfortable to work in.
It can. The Limmat divides the town and the crossings in the centre are limited, so which bank your address is on changes the approach. Send the full street address rather than the postcode alone, which is good practice here anyway given the name.
Engineering and technical arrivals, because of a long standing heavy engineering presence, frequently on contracts with a relocation policy behind them. Fixed start dates are common, which usually points to a dedicated vehicle. It also works as a Zurich commuter base, which brings family moves.
Both, and the working side is the larger. The thermal springs have been used since Roman times and the spa quarter is still there, but the economy runs on engineering and on commuting to Zurich rather than on visitors.
