Lucerne sits where the Reuss leaves the lake, and the medieval core it grew around was laid out for handcarts. Everything about a delivery here comes back to that. The road in is straightforward. The last two hundred metres rarely are.

Lucerne's lanes were laid out for handcarts, not lorries

The lanes around the Kapellbrücke and the Reuss were built centuries before removal vehicles, several are pedestrian or restricted, and the buildings behind them have stairwells to match. A full sized lorry will not be parking outside a flat in the Altstadt. The drive is the easy half. Lucerne sits on the A2, the main north to south artery, so a lorry coming down from the Basel frontier has a clean motorway run and no mountain pass to negotiate. Central Switzerland is among the more predictable deliveries in the country for that reason.

What people underestimate is the old town. The lanes around the Kapellbrücke and the Reuss were built centuries before removal vehicles, several are pedestrian or restricted, and the buildings behind them have stairwells to match. A full sized lorry will not be parking outside a flat in the Altstadt.

That does not stop the move. It means the vehicle stops at a permitted point and the last stretch is handled with something smaller, or from a lift working off the street. Both need arranging in advance with the commune, not negotiated on the morning.

Lucerne also appears as Luzern and Lucerna. Whichever version you searched for, this is the same city and the same page. Give the mover the address exactly as it appears on your Swiss lease.

Household goods prepared for an international removal to Lucerne
Lucerne at a glance
  • 🚚 Road in: A2 motorway from the Basel frontier, no pass to cross
  • 📚 Language: German. Luzern is the local spelling and it will be on your lease
  • 🏠 Access: Old town lanes restricted. Lakeside blocks often have compact lifts
  • 📍 Canton: Lucerne. Registration is with your commune, not the canton
  • 🌌 Around it: Kriens and Emmen sit in the same agglomeration
🏜 Luzern, Lucerne, Lucerna

The name on your paperwork

The city is Luzern in German, which is what the canton, the commune and your lease will all say. Lucerne is the French and English form and it is what most people search for. Lucerna is the Italian. One place, three spellings, and no significance to any of them.

Delivery vehicle on the final stretch into Lucerne

It matters only in one practical way. Give the mover the address exactly as it appears on your Swiss lease, in the language it appears in. A delivery note that names a street in the wrong language slows the last stage down for no good reason.

🏢 Who moves to Lucerne

Why people arrive here

Lucerne is a tourism city with a working economy attached, so the moves split into two groups that want different things. Hospitality and university arrivals are usually smaller loads, often a room rather than a house, and usually flexible on dates, which makes sharing lorry space the sensible answer.

The second group is people moving out of Zurich or Zug for space and lake, bringing a full household with them. That is a different job: a dedicated vehicle, a survey, and a serious conversation about whether the furniture fits the new rooms before anything is loaded.

Access in Lucerne

The city divides fairly neatly for a mover. The Altstadt on the right bank and the streets around the Jesuitenkirche on the left are the constrained part: narrow, partly pedestrianised, and busy with visitors for most of the year. A reserved bay has to be arranged with the commune and it takes notice.

Outside that ring, along the lake towards Meggen or up towards the Bruchstrasse, access is ordinary city access. The limiting factor there is usually the lift rather than the street, because a good deal of the housing stock is inter war and post war blocks with compact lifts.

Tell the mover which of those two situations you are in and the quote changes accordingly. Guess, and it changes on the day.

Lucerne questions

Is Lucerne hard to deliver to?

Only the historic centre. The lanes around the Reuss and the Kapellbrücke are narrow, partly pedestrianised and restricted to vehicles, so a lorry stops at a permitted point and the last stretch is handled separately. Outside that ring, access is ordinary city access and the lift is usually the limiting factor.

Why do I keep seeing Luzern instead of Lucerne?

Luzern is the German spelling and it is the one the canton, the commune and your lease will use. Lucerne is the French and English form. Lucerna is Italian. Same city. Use whichever appears on your Swiss paperwork when you give the mover the address.

Which route does the lorry take?

Lucerne sits on the A2, the main north to south motorway, so a vehicle coming down from the Basel frontier runs straight in without crossing a pass. That makes it one of the more predictable inland legs in Switzerland, and one of the least weather dependent in winter.

Do I need to arrange parking for the removal vehicle?

In the centre, yes, and with notice. A reserved bay is applied for through the commune and the lead time is not the same everywhere in Switzerland. Ask the mover who is arranging it and by when. A crew arriving to find nowhere legal to stop is a crew doing a very long carry.

What about the lift in an older block?

Measure it before you ask anybody for a price. Lucerne has a lot of inter war and post war housing where the lift was sized for people rather than wardrobes. Send the internal dimensions of the car and, more importantly, the door opening, because that is usually the narrower of the two.

Can you also cover Kriens and Emmen?

Yes. Both sit in the Lucerne agglomeration and are served on the same runs. Give the exact delivery address rather than the region, because access between the city centre and the surrounding communes differs more than the map suggests.

Do I clear customs even coming from Germany or Italy?

Yes. Switzerland is in Schengen but outside the EU customs union, so household goods are presented at the Swiss frontier whatever country they set off from. The requirements, including form 18.44 and the six month rule, are set out on our Switzerland customs page.
