Swiss customs treats a British departure differently from a French or German one, and has done since Brexit. Most of the advice still circulating online was written before that changed. Knowing what actually applies to you now is worth more than any packing tip.

A UK load crosses the EU sealed and clears only in Switzerland

The vehicle drives through France, or through Belgium and Germany, without your goods entering EU free circulation on the way. They are presented once, at the Swiss frontier. Nothing is cleared at Calais and nothing is cleared on leaving Germany. A household move from Britain to Switzerland is a road job. Your things go on a lorry at your door, cross the Channel on that same lorry, drive across the continent and come off at your Swiss address. No port, no container yard, no transhipment, unless you have chosen a shared load that is combined on the way.

That is worth saying plainly because people search for shipping to Switzerland and expect the answer to involve a boat. Switzerland is landlocked. There is no Swiss seaport. Even a container that arrives in Europe by sea finishes its journey on a lorry, which for most household moves makes the sea leg an expensive detour rather than a shortcut.

The two things that shape a UK departure specifically are the crossing at the start and the customs presentation at the Swiss frontier. Since Brexit the second of those is a fuller exercise than it is for somebody leaving France or Germany, and it is the part most worth preparing for.

Quick answer: collection anywhere in the UK, across the Channel by ferry or tunnel, overland through France or through Belgium and Germany, Swiss customs at the frontier, then the inland leg to your address. All on the road, usually all on one vehicle.

The journey, in order
  1. Collection at your UK address
  2. Channel crossing, ferry or tunnel
  3. Overland across France, or Belgium and Germany
  4. Swiss frontier, customs presentation
  5. Inland leg to your canton
  6. Transfer to a smaller vehicle if the address needs it
  7. Delivery, unwrap, rebuild, inventory checked off
🚢 The crossing, and the road after it

Getting off the island

The vehicle crosses either by ferry or through the tunnel. Which one is the mover's decision, made on load type, timing and cost, and it makes very little difference to your goods. Both put the same lorry on the far side within a few hours.

What can make a difference is where in the UK you are. A collection in the south east slots easily onto an outbound run. A collection in the Highlands, west Wales or Cornwall adds a day of driving before the vehicle even reaches the coast, and on a shared load it can add waiting time too. Northern Ireland adds a sea leg before that.

None of that is a problem. It is a lead time question, and the answer is to ask early rather than assume everywhere in Britain behaves like Kent.

Which way international movers take across Europe

There is more than one sensible road to Switzerland and the destination decides it.

Through Belgium and Germany tends to serve northern and eastern Switzerland, coming down towards the Basel frontier and on to Zurich, Winterthur, Lucerne, St Gallen and the German speaking cantons.

Across France tends to serve the west and the Lake Geneva shore, entering near Geneva and covering Lausanne, Nyon, Vevey, Montreux and the Valais.

From the Italian side is how Ticino is usually reached. Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona sit south of the Alps, and a vehicle already in northern Italy is closer to them than one sitting in Zurich.

Worth asking: which frontier will my goods clear at, and roughly when. It is the single question that tells you most about how well the route has been thought through.
📄 The frontier, and what Brexit changed

Why a UK departure is treated differently

Switzerland is in Schengen, so people cross without a passport check and assume goods follow the same rule. They do not. Switzerland is outside the European Union and outside the EU customs union, which means every household consignment is presented at the Swiss frontier regardless of where it started.

What changed for British movers is the standing they arrive with. Before Brexit a UK departure was an EU departure. Now it is a departure from a country outside both the EU and EFTA, and the presentation is correspondingly fuller.

What that means in practice

  • Form 18.44, the declaration for clearance of household effects, plus a list of the goods being imported.
  • Evidence of your residence permit position. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security exempts EU-27 and EFTA arrivals from providing assurance of a residence permit. Britain is in neither group, so this falls to you.
  • Proof of transfer of domicile: Swiss employment contract, lease, and confirmation you have deregistered where you were living.
  • More lead time before collection, because the paperwork is prepared in advance.
  • New items and goods bought recently may be treated differently from used personal effects, so keep them separate on the list.
  • Vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, plants, firearms and medicines all sit outside ordinary household goods.

Who does what

The moving company prepares and presents the documents attached to the shipment itself. That is their job and they do it every week.

Your residence permit position, your registration with the commune and your tax situation are yours, and they need checking against official Swiss sources. A mover who tells you not to worry about the permit side is doing you no favours. Get that settled before you fix a delivery date, because clearance can depend on it.

📍 The last leg, once you are in the country

Switzerland is small, but not uniformly close

People look at the map, see a country a fraction the size of France, and assume that once the lorry is across the frontier the job is done. For Basel and Geneva that is roughly true. They sit on the border.

For Chur, Sion and the alpine valleys it is not. Those are hours further on slower roads that climb, and in winter that leg is weather dependent in a way the motorway network is not.

And for Lugano and Ticino it is a different journey altogether, because the Alps sit between them and the rest of the country.

Where the big lorry stops

The vehicle that carried your things across Europe is not always the one that reaches your door. Old town streets in Bern and Solothurn restrict large vehicles. Mountain roads have tight turns. Zermatt, Wengen, Mürren, Saas Fee and Braunwald do not admit ordinary vehicles at all.

In those cases the load transfers to something smaller for the final stage. It is routine, but it needs arranging and pricing in advance rather than discovering on the day, so tell the mover your exact address at enquiry stage and not just the nearest town.

↔ And the other way round

Coming home from Switzerland

The same road, driven the other way, but not the same job. Going out, you deal with Swiss import. Coming back, you deal with UK import, and the two are separate exercises with separate evidence.

Return moves are common on this route: contracts that end, families going back after a school year, retirement, a Swiss property being sold, an estate being cleared. The goods can be a full house, a part load, or things that have been sitting in Swiss storage since the original move out.

Transfer of Residence relief may apply where somebody is genuinely moving their home back to Great Britain, and it has conditions and evidence requirements worth understanding early. Check GOV.UK guidance on moving personal belongings to Great Britain rather than relying on a summary. Tell us the direction at the start, because it determines who prepares what.

🗺 Where in the UK you collect from

Roughly a quarter more from Scotland than from London

Most removal firms will not put a number anywhere near this route, which is unhelpful when the honest answer is that your collection postcode moves the price by hundreds of pounds. One UK international mover does publish route by route starting figures, and the shape of them is worth seeing.

❓ UK to Switzerland questions

Does my move go by road, sea or air?

Road, for almost every UK household move to Switzerland. The vehicle crosses the Channel by ferry or through the tunnel, drives across France or through Belgium and Germany, and enters Switzerland at a road frontier. Switzerland has no seaport, so even a sea container would finish its journey on a lorry. Air is only used for small urgent consignments.

What changed at the border after Brexit?

A UK departure is now a departure from outside both the EU and EFTA, so your household goods need a fuller customs presentation at the Swiss frontier than a French or German departure does. In practice that means a detailed itemised inventory with values, proof of your residence position, and more lead time on the paperwork. Check the current requirements with the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security rather than relying on what somebody was told a few years ago.

Which crossing and which frontier will be used?

It depends where in Switzerland you are going, and the mover decides it. Broadly, northern Swiss destinations tend to be reached through Belgium and Germany towards the Basel frontier, while Geneva and the Lake Geneva shore are usually approached across France. Ticino, south of the Alps, is often served from Italy instead. Ask which route yours is taking if the timing matters to you.

Can you collect from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?

Yes. Collections run from across the UK. What differs is the lead time, because a collection well away from the main southern routes may wait longer for a suitable vehicle, particularly on a shared load. Northern Ireland adds a sea leg before the vehicle even reaches the Channel, so build extra time in.

How long does the journey take?

The driving itself is the predictable part. What varies is everything around it: how long a shared vehicle waits to fill, how quickly Swiss clearance is completed, and how far inland your address sits. A quoted transit time should always be given as a window rather than a day, and anyone offering a precise date on a shared load is guessing.

Do I have to be there for both collection and delivery?

Somebody responsible has to be, at both ends. At collection they sign off what goes on the vehicle. At delivery they check items off the inventory and say where each piece goes. If it cannot be you, nominate somebody in writing beforehand and make sure they have access, keys and your instructions.

Can you move me back from Switzerland to the UK?

Yes. It is the same road run in reverse but a different paperwork exercise, because you are then dealing with UK import rather than Swiss import. Transfer of Residence relief may apply where somebody is genuinely moving their home back to Great Britain. Tell us which direction you are going at the start, because it changes who needs what.

Where in the UK do you collect from?

Anywhere. London and the south east are the busiest, then Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and Liverpool. Scotland, Wales, the south west and Northern Ireland all run, with longer lead times. Give us the postcode and the earliest and latest dates you can accept.
