The Basel commune that faces France, with a timber framed village at its heart.
Allschwil sits west of Basel with the French border along its edge, which distinguishes it from the Basel communes facing Germany on the other side. At its centre is an old village core of timber framed houses that the modern town grew around.
Most of Allschwil is a comfortable modern suburb: post war and later housing, sensible streets, lifts that will take a wardrobe, and room for a vehicle. It is among the largest communes in its canton and most of it is straightforward.
The exception is the old core. The historic village at the centre kept its timber framed houses and its lane widths, and those lanes were laid out for carts. Deliveries there are worked out address by address with the commune.
It is a small area inside a large commune, which is the opposite of the Basel city pattern where the difficult part is most of what people move into. Here the difficult part is a few streets.
Allschwil also appears as Basel-Landschaft and Baselland. Whichever version you searched for, this is the same city and the same page. Give the mover the address exactly as it appears on your Swiss lease.
The historic core kept the shape and the buildings of the village Allschwil was before Basel grew out towards it. Timber framed houses, narrow lanes, and protection on the structures.
For a delivery that means the familiar Swiss arrangement: a standing point agreed with the commune rather than a space at the door, and a carry from there. Timber framed buildings also mean a crew boarding and padding a route more carefully than usual.
The compensation is that the area is small and the carry is short. This is nothing like delivering into a whole protected town such as Solothurn or Bern.
The Basel area touches two countries and the communes divide between them. Riehen and the north eastern side face Germany. Allschwil and the west face France.
For a vehicle arriving that changes the sensible approach and may change the crossing. For a resident it changes which country is a short walk for the shops, and where cross border workers are commuting from.
If your goods are being collected on the French side rather than the Swiss, say so plainly. It is an ordinary movement here and it is a different customs position from a UK arrival.

Allschwil is in Basel-Landschaft, the canton surrounding the city, not Basel-Stadt which contains the city and Riehen. Registration and any parking application follow Basel-Landschaft procedures.
The two cantons are interleaved around the city closely enough that neighbouring communes can be in different ones, which is invisible walking around and quite visible on a form.
Everything is German speaking, and the postcode settles the address.
