Danish housing makes this more important than it is in Britain. Older Copenhagen and Frederiksberg blocks were built long before anyone designed for furniture removal. Stairwells are narrow with tight half-landing turns. Where a lift exists it is frequently a small original cage that will not take a sofa or a wardrobe.
So the measurements that matter are the narrowest point on the route:
Send those to the mover with photographs. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between a piece arriving and a piece sitting on the pavement.
In a protected building, in Dragor, Koge or central Helsingor, this matters more still, because eighteenth and nineteenth century doorways and staircases are smaller than modern ones and cannot be altered.
Three mechanisms, and the right one depends on how much there is.
Part load. For several pieces, or a room's worth, this is usually the answer. Your furniture shares vehicle or container space with other consignments and you pay for the volume you use. See part load removals.
Single item service. For one or two pieces, some movers run a dedicated single item service, often on a longer lead time because it waits for a suitable run. Priced per item rather than per cubic metre.
Dedicated vehicle. Rarely justified for furniture alone unless the pieces are extremely valuable, extremely fragile or on a fixed date.
Whichever applies, furniture is not a box. It cannot travel in a box shipping service, which is priced per carton and built for cartons.
Routing affects the price the same way it does for a full household. Jutland destinations such as Aarhus, Aalborg and Esbjerg are reached straight up the E45 with no crossing at all. Copenhagen and the rest of Zealand need the Little Belt and then the Great Belt bridge. Odense on Funen needs only the shorter Little Belt. Sea freight into Copenhagen Malmo Port suits Zealand, while the DFDS Immingham to Esbjerg freight ferry, six sailings a week at around 18 and a half hours, suits the west.

Furniture on a shared load is handled more than furniture on a dedicated move, and packing should reflect that.
Dismantle where the design allows. Volume is what you pay for on a part load, and a bed frame or a flat-pack wardrobe taken apart occupies a fraction of the assembled space. Keep the fittings bagged and taped to the frame, not in a separate box that gets separated.
Do not dismantle antique joinery. Older furniture assembled with glued joints or wooden pegs is frequently weaker apart than together. Ask before taking anything apart that was not made to come apart.
Protect the corners and the feet. Corners take the impact and feet snap. Both are where damage happens on a shared load.
Wrap upholstery properly. Fabric picks up dirt and moisture from other consignments. This is where a professional wrap earns its money.
Photograph before wrapping. Existing marks, existing repairs, the condition of every surface. It is the only evidence you will have if something goes wrong.
Declare high value separately. Standard cover carries per-item limits and an antique or designer piece will exceed them.
An honest question that a removals company should ask you rather than avoid.
Ship it when the piece is genuinely irreplaceable, when it has real value, when it was made for the space it is going to, or when it means something. None of those has a price comparison attached.
Think again for ordinary flat-pack, mass-market furniture and anything already showing wear. Denmark has a substantial second-hand market and the arithmetic on shipping a well-used bookcase across Europe rarely works.
Check first whether the Danish property is furnished. Rentals and company accommodation frequently are, and people ship furniture into flats that already have it.
And check the fit. A piece that cost more to ship than it is worth, and then does not go up the stairs, is the worst outcome available and it is entirely preventable with a tape measure.
On customs, furniture travelling as part of transferring your residence falls under the same rules as any household goods. The carrier files the clearance declaration with Toldstyrelsen and you complete a declaration of personal property, form 12.024. If you do not meet the residence conditions, Danish moms at 25% applies to the declared value.
