An international removal is one of the few things people buy where a large sum is paid well in advance, to international movers they have never dealt with, for a service that starts a month later. Almost nobody asks the obvious question about that money.

International moving companies fail like any other business, and when one does mid-season it affects the people who had paid and not yet moved. The protections exist and they are not automatic. You have to choose them.
Some trade bodies run a scheme that covers money paid to a member firm that then ceases trading before the job. It is the strongest of the three and the least known.
Ask whether the firm's accreditation includes one, and what it covers. Not every scheme is the same and not every member is in it.
For qualifying purchases over a hundred pounds, card protection under consumer credit law can give you a claim against the card provider as well as the trader.
Conditions apply and they matter, so read them. Paying a deposit by bank transfer to save a card fee removes this entirely.

A firm asking for the whole sum at booking is asking you to carry all of the risk for weeks. Ask why.
People read moving company accreditations as a quality mark and stop there. The more useful reading is financial. The serious schemes inspect premises and procedures, and several also look at accounts and financial standing on a repeating cycle.
That is the part that bears on your deposit. A scheme that has looked at a firm's books within the last year tells you something a customer review never can, and it is the reason an accredited international moving company is a different risk from an unaccredited one.
Ask which body, and ask when they were last audited. A firm that knows the answer immediately is a firm that takes it seriously.

The valued inventory is separate and it is yours to write. It serves the customs entry and any claim, and no international removal companies can price your possessions for you.
