🚚 European Removals to Denmark

European Removals to Denmark from the UK

If you are moving to Denmark from another EU country, most of what you will read about Danish removals does not apply to you.

The customs pages, the relief conditions, the twelve month residence rule, the declaration of personal property. All of that exists because Britain left the EU and became a third country. Between two member states, none of it happens.

What remains is a transport job, and a long one for some corridors. Tell us where you are moving from and we will match you with one vetted mover who works that route. Free, no obligation.

FIDI FAIM is the international quality standard for removal companies. Accreditation follows an independent Ernst and Young audit of more than 200 quality and operational criteria, repeated every three years.

International Removals Companies connects each enquiry with one FIDI-certified partner mover. We are the matching layer. The partner firm does the lifting. DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD, company 07425576, has operated the service since November 2010. The enquiry is free.

Intra-EU means no customs declaration at all.
📦 What is included

What intra-EU actually means for your move

Being precise about this saves people a lot of unnecessary anxiety and occasionally a lot of money.

No customs declaration for household goods. Denmark and your origin country are both in the single market and the customs union. Goods move freely. There is no Toldstyrelsen residence transfer process because there is nothing being imported from outside the union.

No twelve month residence condition. That requirement applies to third-country moves. It has no bearing on an EU origin.

No six month ownership rule. Same reason. You can bring furniture bought last week.

No duty and no Danish import VAT. Danish moms at 25% applies to goods entering from outside the EU. Your belongings arriving from Spain, Germany or the Netherlands are not an import.

What you do still need. An inventory, because the mover needs one and insurance depends on it. And Danish residency registration once you arrive, which is an administrative matter rather than a customs one.

If a mover quotes you for customs clearance on an intra-EU household move, ask them what specifically they are clearing.

🛣 How it works

The corridors, and how they differ

Every route into Denmark ends the same way, at one of three crossing tiers. Jutland needs none. Funen needs the Little Belt. Zealand and Copenhagen need the Great Belt on top. Where the route starts is what varies.

Germany. The only land border Denmark has. The shortest corridor by a distance, and the road every other continental move already uses. See the German corridor.

Netherlands. Directly on the standard road route north, which makes consolidation and shared loads unusually easy. See moving from the Netherlands.

Sweden. The only corridor with a fixed road link into Copenhagen itself, over the Oresund bridge, plus the short Helsingborg to Helsingor ferry further north. See moving from Sweden.

Norway. Not an EU member, but in the EEA, and reached by ferry to Frederikshavn in north Jutland rather than by road. Different again. See moving from Norway.

Spain. The longest common corridor at roughly 2,400km, where shared vehicle space makes a substantial difference. See Spain to Denmark.

Everywhere else. France, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, Ireland and the rest all route through Germany in the end. Tell us the origin and we will match accordingly.

🏠 Practical detail

What still costs money on an EU move

Removing the customs process does not remove the things that actually drive a removals price.

Distance. Obvious, and it dominates on the long corridors. Hamburg to Aarhus and Malaga to Copenhagen are not comparable jobs.

Which side of the Great Belt. A Copenhagen delivery crosses a toll bridge that an Aarhus delivery does not.

Shared or dedicated. Shared vehicle space is substantially cheaper on a long corridor and gives you a window rather than a date. On a 2,400km run that saving is worth real money.

Access at both ends. The single most underestimated factor anywhere. Older Copenhagen and Frederiksberg blocks frequently have no lift and need an external hoist. Protected quarters need a relay vehicle. Southern European apartment buildings have their own narrow stairwells and village streets a lorry cannot enter.

Volume. And what you decide not to take, which on a long corridor is often the biggest saving available.

📄 Detail

Registration in Denmark, which is separate

Customs is not the only administrative thing people conflate, so it is worth separating clearly.

Moving your goods and establishing your residence are two different processes handled by two different parts of the Danish system. As an EU citizen you have the right to live and work in Denmark, but you still register locally after arriving, and registration is what gives you access to healthcare, banking and everything that follows.

That process has nothing to do with your furniture and does not gate it. Your goods can arrive before your paperwork is complete, unlike a third-country move where the customs relief conditions tie the two together.

It does affect practical timing though. If you cannot open a Danish bank account or sign a lease until you are registered, and you cannot register until you have an address, the sequencing matters for when you actually want the delivery. Ask about short-term storage if the dates are awkward, because it is usually cheaper than an emergency solution booked in a hurry.

🏆 Choosing a mover

Accreditation: what to check before you book

Intra-EU work looks simple, which is exactly why some moving companies quote it carelessly. Accreditation is how you tell who has actually been checked.

FIDI FAIM Certified

Audited independently by Ernst and Young against more than 200 quality and operational criteria, from how a firm handles client money to how it trains its crews. The audit repeats every three years.

Every mover we match you with holds it.

The other memberships to look for
  • BAR Overseas, the British Association of Removers overseas group
  • IAM, the International Association of Movers
  • EUROMOVERS, the European mover network
  • FEDEMAC, the European federation of movers associations

These tell you a company works to agreed standards and that you have somewhere to take a complaint.

Our network partners come from the AGM Group network, whose website is agm.group. Every one of these removal companies has been checked before it joins.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need customs paperwork moving to Denmark from another EU country?

No. Both countries are in the single market and the customs union, so household goods move freely. There is no Toldstyrelsen residence transfer process, no twelve month residence condition, no six month ownership rule and no duty or Danish import VAT. You still need an inventory for your mover and for insurance.

Why do all the Denmark removals guides talk about customs then?

Because they are written for moves from Britain, which left the EU and is now a third country. Everything about relief conditions, the twelve month rule and form 12.024 exists for that situation. Between two member states none of it applies.

Which is the shortest corridor into Denmark?

Germany, by a distance. It is the only land border Denmark has and the road that every other continental move uses in its final stretch. The Netherlands sits directly on that same route, which makes shared loads easy to arrange.

Does it cost more to move to Copenhagen than to Jutland?

It can, and this applies whatever your origin. Copenhagen and Zealand sit beyond the Great Belt toll bridge. Jutland needs no crossing at all and Funen needs only the shorter Little Belt. On a long corridor, distance dominates, but the crossing is still a real line in the quote.

Can my goods arrive before I have registered in Denmark?

Yes. Moving goods and establishing residence are separate processes on an intra-EU move, and the goods are not gated by your registration. That differs from a third-country move where the customs relief conditions tie the two together.

Is a shared load worth it on a long European corridor?

Usually, and increasingly so with distance. On a 2,400km run from Spain the saving from sharing vehicle space is substantial. The trade is a delivery window rather than a fixed date, because the vehicle waits for enough cargo heading the same way.
