Packing services change entirely for a northern Chinese winter

A container is a steel box with no heating. Left standing overnight in Harbin in January it reaches whatever the air outside is doing, which can be thirty degrees below freezing. Things that survive a summer crossing do not always survive that.

One vetted mover from our network handles it, and international movers who work the north east know this without being told. A firm that has only shipped to Shanghai and Guangzhou will pack your relocation exactly as they always do. Ask what good movers in the north east do differently.

This applies to more shipments than people expect, because rail freight crosses Central Asia and Siberia regardless of which Chinese city it finishes in.

Quick answer: below about minus twenty, liquids burst, screens crack, wood and instruments split and adhesives fail. Northern Chinese cities reach that routinely from November to March, and so does the rail route in either direction.
Household shipment prepared for delivery in freezing northern Chinese conditions
At a glance
  • Worst affected: Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Dalian
  • 🌡 Also cold: Beijing, Tianjin, Jinan, Xi'an in deep winter
  • 🚂 Rail route: Crosses the same extremes whatever the destination
  • 💧 First failure: Liquids freeze and burst their containers
  • 🖥 Second: Screens and electronics crack on rapid warming
  • 📆 Season: Roughly November to March in the north east
Damage the cold actually causes

How household goods fail in freezing conditions

This is not theoretical. Each of these is a routine claim on winter shipments to the north.

Liquids freeze and burst. Water expands as it freezes and splits whatever contains it. Toiletries, cleaning products, wine, half used tins of paint, the water left in a kettle or a washing machine hose. One burst bottle ruins its own carton and everything packed beneath it, and nobody finds out until unpacking.

Screens and electronics crack. Liquid crystal displays behave badly in deep cold and can crack outright. More often the damage comes on the way back up, when a frozen device is carried into a heated room and condensation forms inside it.

Wood splits. Furniture, instruments and wooden objects lose moisture in extreme cold and extremely dry air. Joints open, panels cup and stringed instruments crack. This is why pianos and violins need genuine protection rather than a blanket.

Adhesives fail. Glued joints, veneers and some packaging tapes let go at low temperatures. A carton that was sealed in a warm British house can be open by the time it arrives.

Batteries leak and lose charge. Remove them from everything rather than just from what is flying.

Other casualties. Vinyl records warp, candles crack, cosmetics separate, some plastics become brittle enough to snap under normal handling.

The road leg matters too. A container travelling nine hundred kilometres north from Dalian in February spends days at ambient temperature. The destination decides the exposure, not the port.

Winter conditions affecting a household delivery in northern China
Whether this applies to you

Which shipments need cold weather preparation

Take this seriously if

  • You are shipping to Harbin, Changchun or Shenyang
  • Your delivery falls between November and March
  • You are using rail freight in either direction
  • The shipment includes instruments, artwork or electronics
  • Your goods face a long inland road leg in winter
  • Storage in the north is part of the plan

Less of a concern if

  • Your destination is southern or coastal China
  • Delivery falls between May and September
  • You are shipping by sea to Shanghai, Shenzhen or the delta
  • The load is clothing, books and soft goods only
  • Air freight is being used, which spends little time at ambient
  • You have no liquids, electronics or timber in the load
💵 What winter adds to a move

The cost of a cold weather shipment

Winter costs appear in two places: extra preparation before the goods leave, and a slower delivery day at the other end. Neither is large on its own and together they are worth planning for.

Preparation

Insulated packing and crating

Modest addition

Targeted at the items that actually need it.

Delivery day

Crew hours in freezing conditions

Longer than summer

Shorter working days, ice, and barrows unusable on slopes.

Contingency

Snow closures on northern routes

Occasional

Roads north close most winters at some point.

What pushes the figure up

  • Delivery between December and February in the far north
  • Insulated packing and additional crating
  • Ice on any sloped approach, ruling out a barrow
  • Shorter daylight requiring a second delivery day
  • Snow closures delaying the inland road leg
  • Storage while a delayed shipment waits

What brings it back down

  • Timing the delivery between May and September
  • Draining and removing liquids rather than insulating them
  • Rail freight, which shortens exposure by shortening the journey
  • Delivering into a newer compound with a working service lift
  • Sending temperature sensitive items separately by air
  • Leaving behind anything that will not survive the trip

🔧 Practical measures that work

How to pack and unpack against the cold

None of this is complicated. It is simply not what a standard pack does unless somebody asks.

Remove every liquid. Not insulate, remove. Toiletries, cleaning products, wine, paint, anything in a bottle. Drain washing machines and dishwashers thoroughly and check hoses. This single step prevents most winter claims.

Take batteries out of everything. Devices, remote controls, clocks, toys.

Crate what matters. Instruments, artwork and anything with veneer or fine joinery. A crate buffers temperature swings as well as impact.

Consider a separate air consignment for the genuinely temperature sensitive: laptops, cameras, a good instrument, anything irreplaceable. Air spends hours at ambient rather than weeks.

Then the part nobody mentions: unpacking. When the container arrives in January, the contents are at outside temperature. Carrying frozen cartons straight into a heated flat causes condensation inside electronics and rapid dimensional change in wood.

Let cartons stand for several hours in the coolest part of the flat before opening. Leave electronics sealed and boxed for longer, ideally a full day, before switching anything on. Give instruments a day or two before tuning. This costs nothing and prevents damage that packing cannot.

Timing beats every other measure. If your date has any flexibility, a delivery in October rather than January removes the whole problem and costs less in crew hours at the same time.

Before a winter shipment leaves

Moving services checklist for a northern China winter

  • ✓ Every liquid removed from the load, not just packed carefully
  • ✓ Washing machines and dishwashers drained and hoses cleared
  • ✓ Batteries removed from every device
  • ✓ Instruments and artwork crated rather than wrapped
  • ✓ Temperature sensitive items considered for air freight
  • ✓ Delivery date checked against the worst of the season
  • ✓ Compound access and lift booking confirmed for winter
  • ✓ A plan to let cartons acclimatise before unpacking

Questions about winter shipping

Common questions answered

Which Chinese cities are cold enough to matter?

Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang and Dalian in the north east, where sustained temperatures well below freezing run from November to March. Beijing, Tianjin, Jinan and Xi'an get cold enough in deep winter to be worth planning for too.

What actually gets damaged?

Liquids burst their containers, screens and electronics crack, wood and instruments split as moisture is drawn out, adhesives fail so cartons and veneers let go, and batteries leak. Vinyl, candles, cosmetics and some plastics all suffer too.

Does this apply to rail shipments anywhere in China?

Yes. The rail route crosses Central Asia and Siberia and meets the same extremes regardless of which Chinese city the container finishes in. A rail shipment to Chengdu in winter faces the conditions on the route rather than at the destination.

What is the single most useful thing to do?

Remove every liquid from the load. Not insulate them, remove them. Toiletries, cleaning products, wine, paint, and the water left in washing machine hoses. That one step prevents most winter claims by itself.

Why does unpacking matter?

Because the contents arrive at outside temperature. Carrying frozen cartons into a heated flat causes condensation inside electronics and rapid dimensional change in wood. Let cartons stand several hours before opening and leave electronics sealed for a day.

Should I ship electronics in winter at all?

Consider sending the ones you care about by air instead. Air spends hours at ambient temperature rather than weeks, and laptops, cameras and instruments are exactly the items where the difference matters.

Does winter delay the shipment?

The sea leg is unaffected. What changes is the delivery day, which is shorter and slower on ice, and the inland road leg, since northern routes close most winters at some point. Build contingency into a January arrival.

Is a container heated or insulated?

No. A standard shipping container is a steel box with no heating or insulation. Its interior reaches whatever the outside air is doing, which in the far north can be thirty degrees below freezing overnight.

Can I just move at a different time of year?

If you can, do. A delivery between May and September removes the problem entirely and costs less in crew hours as well. Timing beats every packing measure on this particular question.
