Kunming sits at nineteen hundred metres on a plateau in the far southwest, closer to Hanoi and Vientiane than to Shanghai. The climate is the best in China and the freight routing is among the more interesting, because this city looks south towards Southeast Asia rather than east towards the sea.
One vetted mover from our network takes the job, matched for Yunnan coverage. Ask about routing rather than accepting the first option, because Kunming has genuinely different choices from most Chinese cities and the default is rarely the cheapest.
Containers usually clear in Guangdong and travel roughly fifteen hundred kilometres west, or come up from the Beibu Gulf ports through Nanning. European rail reaches the city, and the railway south into Laos has opened a route that did not exist a few years ago.
Kunming is a long way from any Chinese port and much closer to several foreign ones, which gives it an unusual set of options.
By sea through Guangdong. The conventional route clears at Nansha or Shenzhen and drives roughly fifteen hundred kilometres west. It is the default on most quotes and it is a very long domestic leg.
By sea through the Beibu Gulf. Qinzhou and the other Guangxi ports are considerably closer, reached through Nanning. Sailing frequency from northern Europe is lower, so it will not always suit, but where a service works it removes several hundred kilometres.
By European rail. Services reach Kunming and clear inland. Given how far the city is from any Chinese coast, rail is a serious contender here rather than a premium curiosity, in the same way it is for Chongqing or Harbin.
The southern railway. The line running south to Vientiane and onward towards Thailand opened recently and has changed regional freight considerably. It is not a route from Britain, but if your move originates in or passes through Southeast Asia it is worth asking about.
That southern orientation is the thing to understand about Kunming. It is the Chinese gateway to Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, and a good deal of what moves through here is going to or coming from those directions rather than from Europe.
Kunming is the pleasantest city in China to work in, and that shows up in a delivery day.
The climate is genuinely exceptional. It is called the spring city because temperatures stay mild all year, with no freezing winter and no furnace summer. A crew can work a full comfortable day in February or in July, which is true of almost nowhere else on this list. If you have any flexibility in your dates, you barely need to use it.
The altitude is the one thing to plan for. At around nineteen hundred metres, sealed containers of liquid can bulge or leak, aerosols behave differently, and anything pressurised should be checked before it is packed. A crew arriving from sea level will also feel the first day, which is worth knowing if you are paying by the hour.
Wuhua and Panlong, the central districts, form the old city and the main commercial area. Mid and high rise, lifts in the newer stock, tighter streets in the older quarters.
Chenggong, the southern new district, is the largest planned expansion and holds the university town along with a great deal of newer housing. Wide roads, modern compounds, service lifts. This is the easy delivery.
Guandu, in the south east towards the airport, mixes older residential with newer development and industrial areas. Access is generally straightforward.
Xishan, in the west towards the lake and the hills, has some genuinely sloping residential areas where the city climbs, so an address there is worth checking.
Yunnan's ethnic diversity is greater than any other Chinese province, with more than twenty recognised groups, and Kunming is where much of that meets. It affects daily life rather than a removal, but it does mean the city has a different feel from anywhere else in this build.
Kunming is dear by sea because of the distance and competitive by rail because of the same distance. The gap between the two routes is narrower here than almost anywhere, so both are worth pricing properly.

Clearance depends on the route. Rail freight clears inland at Kunming. Sea shipments clear at the arrival port, in Guangdong or the Beibu Gulf, before the long road leg. You need a valid residence permit, a full valued inventory and your passport details.
The national rules are the same across mainland China, so the detail on permits, restricted goods and the cultural relics rule is set out in full on the China removals and shipping page. Read that before you start packing, particularly the section on items made before 1949.
A good share of movement out of Kunming goes south into Southeast Asia rather than to Europe, following the same routes that bring goods in. Those services run frequently and the local trade knows them.
For Britain, apply for Transfer of Residence relief with HMRC before the goods leave. Yunnan has a substantial trade in tea, jade and ethnic textiles. Tea and modern textiles export freely, but jade deserves care: some material is restricted and anything genuinely old falls under the cultural relics rule and needs an export certificate.
A move usually means moving money too, whether that is a deposit on a Kunming flat or funds coming back the other way. We have helped customers with currency exchange in any currency through trusted partners for many years, and our partners can help with the money side of your move. Mention it on the form and it gets included.

The southwest is a long way from any Chinese port, which is why rail and the southern routes matter more here than elsewhere.

Usually by sea to Guangdong followed by roughly fifteen hundred kilometres of road, or through the Beibu Gulf ports which are considerably closer. European rail also reaches the city and clears inland. Given the distance from any Chinese coast, rail is a serious option here rather than a luxury.
Yes, and the gap is narrower here than almost anywhere. Rail costs more per cubic metre but removes an enormous domestic leg and several weeks. For a family move with a fixed start date it often works out close once storage and temporary accommodation are counted.
It can. Kunming sits at around nineteen hundred metres. Sealed containers of liquid may bulge or leak, aerosols behave differently and anything pressurised should be checked before packing. A crew arriving from sea level will also feel the first day.
It is the best in China for this kind of work. Temperatures stay mild all year with no freezing winter and no furnace summer, so a crew can work a full comfortable day in any month. There is no seasonal premium on a Kunming delivery, which is unusual.
Chenggong, the southern new district. It is the largest planned expansion, holds the university town and a great deal of newer housing, and has wide roads with modern compounds and service lifts. Xishan in the west has some genuinely sloping areas worth checking.
Yes, and a good share of movement out of the city goes that way. Kunming is China's gateway to Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, and the railway south towards Vientiane and Thailand has changed regional freight considerably. Give the destination country at enquiry.
Nine to eleven weeks by sea and road, which reflects the long inland leg. Rail from Europe is four to six weeks. Air freight into Changshui takes about two weeks and is priced by weight rather than volume.
Rail freight clears inland at Kunming, putting the paperwork and your address in the same city. A sea shipment clears at the arrival port in Guangdong or the Beibu Gulf before the road leg. Ask which applies to your booking.
With care. Tea and modern textiles export freely and are worth buying here. Jade is different: some material is restricted and anything genuinely old falls under the cultural relics rule, needing an export certificate. Have older pieces assessed before you commit to shipping them.
Send your collection address, your Kunming district, a rough idea of the volume and your date. A vetted mover from our network checks the route, the access and the paperwork, then comes back to you with the price.
