Long distance movers choose between rail and a very long drive

Chengdu is sixteen hundred kilometres from the sea and, unlike its mountain neighbour downriver, entirely flat. That combination makes it one of the better inland cities to move into: the freight has to travel a long way, but once it arrives the delivery is easy.

We match you to one vetted mover from our network that runs western China. The thing worth asking any firm quoting Chengdu is whether rail is on the table, because a quote that only offers sea has quietly added several weeks to your timetable without saying so.

Freight trains from Europe terminate at the international railway port in Qingbaijiang, in the north of the municipality. The alternative is a container to Shanghai and then a long road or rail leg west. Both work. They are not equivalent.

Quick answer: Chengdu goods arrive either by rail from Europe, in roughly four to six weeks door to door, or by sea to a coastal port and then overland, closer to nine weeks. Delivery in the city itself is straightforward because the ground is flat.

Rail from Europe, or a container and a long drive

This is the decision that shapes a Chengdu quote, and most firms present only one side of it.

Rail. Freight services run between European terminals and the international railway port at Qingbaijiang, across Kazakhstan and Russia. Your goods cross from the UK to a European terminal, join the train, and are unloaded in the Chengdu municipality itself. There is no fifteen hundred kilometre inland leg because the train has already covered it.

Sea and overland. The conventional route lands a container at Shanghai or another coastal port and moves it west by road or domestic rail. It is cheaper per cubic metre and considerably slower, and it adds a handling stage where goods are transferred.

The honest comparison is not the freight rate alone. Count the extra weeks of temporary accommodation, the storage if the two ends do not line up, and the handling risk of an additional transfer. For a family move with a start date, rail frequently comes out ahead once all of that is in the sum. For a low value shipment with an open timetable, sea still wins.

Rail services do change. Frequencies shift, routes reroute, and availability needs confirming rather than assuming. Ask whether the service is running for your window before you plan around it.

🏠 Access, districts and delivery day

A flat city, and what that means on delivery day

Chengdu sits on a plain, and after Chongqing an hour and a half downriver, that is a considerable relief. There are no gradients to speak of, the road grid is regular, and a lorry can generally reach the building.

Tianfu New Area, the southern expansion, is where most newer international housing sits. It was planned from open ground, so the roads are wide, the compounds have service lifts and there is space to unload. Delivery here is about as simple as China offers.

Gaoxin, the high technology zone, is similar in character and holds much of the corporate housing tied to the technology and pharmaceutical employers.

Wuhou contains the consular district along Renmin Nan Lu and a good deal of established international housing around it. A mix of older mid rise and newer towers. Access is fine, though parking near an entrance on the main consular road often needs arranging in advance.

Qingyang and the old centre are denser, with narrower streets around the Kuanzhai Alley area and some blocks predating lifts. Not difficult by Chinese standards, but not Tianfu either.

The climate is worth a mention because it is unusual. Chengdu is famously overcast, with mild winters and humid summers. There is no frozen ground to slow a crew as there is in Dalian, and no mountain heat as in Chongqing. It is one of the more forgiving working climates in inland China, though the summer humidity means goods should not sit unpacked for long.

What movers charge for a Chengdu shipment

The spread here comes almost entirely from the route rather than the address, which is the reverse of most Chinese cities. An easy delivery does not save you much if the goods took nine weeks and a transfer to reach the city.

Lower band

Boxes and part loads

Plan for around £350 to £1,200

Teachers and single postings, usually by sea and road with no fixed date.

Middle band

Shared container space

Plan for around £1,500 to £3,800

Apartment moves into Gaoxin or Tianfu. Rail adds cost and removes weeks.

Upper band

Sole use container

Plan for around £4,000 to £9,500

Family moves, and the band where rail freight most often justifies itself.

What pushes a Chengdu quote up

  • Rail freight, which costs more per cubic metre than sea
  • The inland leg on a sea routing, which is long whichever port is used
  • Transfer handling where goods change mode at a coastal port
  • Older Qingyang blocks with narrow street access and no lift
  • Storage if the rail schedule and your tenancy date do not align

What brings it back down

  • Delivering into Tianfu or Gaoxin, where access was planned in
  • Choosing sea and overland if your date is genuinely open
  • Flat ground throughout, which keeps crew hours predictable
  • Shipping less, since the inland leg is priced by volume either way
  • Joining an existing rail consignment where one is running

📄 Customs clearance and the paperwork behind it

Clearing your shipment into Chengdu

Where you clear depends on the route. Rail freight clears inland at Chengdu. Sea shipments normally clear at the arrival port before the overland leg. Either way you need a valid residence permit, a full valued inventory and your passport details. Ask which applies, because it determines where your paperwork goes and how long it sits.

The national rules are the same across mainland China, so the detail on permits, restricted goods and the cultural relics rule is set out in full on the China removals and shipping page. Read that before you start packing, particularly the section on items made before 1949.

Have these ready

  • ✓ Valid residence permit
  • ✓ Passport and visa details
  • ✓ Full inventory with values
  • ✓ Your Chengdu delivery address in Chinese
  • ✓ Export certificates for any older pieces
↔ The journey in the other direction

Shipping out of Chengdu to Britain

The route question applies in reverse and rail is worth the same look. A container leaving Chengdu by sea has to reach the coast first, which is most of a fortnight before it has left the country. Westbound rail removes that entirely.

Apply for Transfer of Residence relief with HMRC before anything is packed. Sichuan has a strong trade in older lacquerware, scrolls and carved furniture, and pieces from before 1949 need an export certificate. Get them assessed early rather than at the border.

Quick answer: apply for Transfer of Residence relief with HMRC before your goods leave Chengdu, keep a complete inventory, and have anything made before 1949 assessed for an export certificate.

❓ Questions about shipping to Chengdu

Common questions about moving to and from Chengdu

Can my belongings come to Chengdu by train from Europe?

Yes. Freight services run between European terminals and the international railway port at Qingbaijiang, in the north of the municipality. Your goods cross to a European terminal, join the train, and arrive in Chengdu itself rather than at a coastal port fifteen hundred kilometres away.

Is rail worth paying more for?

Often, for this city. Rail costs more per cubic metre than sea but removes the inland leg and several weeks. Once you count temporary accommodation, storage and the extra handling stage on a sea routing, the gap narrows considerably. For a family with a fixed start date it usually makes sense.

How long does each option take?

Rail runs roughly four to six weeks door to door. Sea to a coastal port followed by a long overland leg is closer to nine weeks. Air freight is about two weeks and only sensible for small light consignments, since it is priced by weight rather than volume.

Is Chengdu difficult to deliver into?

No, and that is worth saying because its neighbour downriver is. Chengdu sits on a plain, the ground is flat, the road grid is regular and a lorry can usually reach the building. The difficulty on a Chengdu move is getting the goods to the city, not into the flat.

Which district is easiest?

Tianfu New Area, the southern expansion. It was planned from open ground, so roads are wide, compounds have working service lifts and there is space to unload. Gaoxin, the technology zone, is similar. The older streets around Qingyang are denser and slower.

Does the climate affect the move?

Less than in most Chinese cities. Winters are mild so there is no frozen ground, and the city is famously overcast rather than baking. Summer humidity is the one consideration: goods should not sit unpacked for long, and instruments benefit from proper crating.

Where does my shipment clear customs?

It depends on the route. Rail freight clears inland at Chengdu. Sea shipments normally clear at the arrival port on the coast before the overland leg begins. Ask your mover which applies, because it changes where the paperwork goes and how long clearance takes.

What documents does Chinese customs want?

A valid residence permit, a complete inventory with values, and your passport details. The goods should be used personal effects arriving as a single shipment within the permitted window after you enter the country. These are national rules rather than anything specific to Sichuan.

Should I use rail for the journey home as well?

It is worth pricing. A container leaving Chengdu by sea has to reach the coast before it even starts the ocean leg, which adds most of a fortnight. Westbound rail avoids that, which makes the comparison closer than the headline freight rates suggest.
