Most inland Chinese cities look east to Shanghai for their freight. Changsha looks south. Guangzhou and Shenzhen are considerably closer than the Yangtze delta, and that single fact changes the routing, the timing and often the price of a move here.

By river. The Xiang runs north into Dongting Lake and on to the Yangtze, and barge traffic does move this way. It is slow and involves several transhipments, so it rarely suits household goods.
Ask specifically which port a quote is routed through. On this particular city it is the question that most often finds an unnecessary three hundred kilometres.
The Xiang River runs through Changsha with Orange Isle in the middle of it, and the two banks have quite different characters.
Furong and Tianxin, on the east bank, form the commercial and administrative centre. Dense mid and high rise, lifts standard in the newer stock, busy streets. The older quarters near the centre have tighter access and smaller lifts.
Yuelu, on the west bank, holds the universities and the older academic quarter beneath the hills, along with a great deal of newer development. Hunan University and the historic academy sit here, so there is a very large student population and a steady flow of small shipments each September and June. Access varies between the older campus areas and the newer compounds.
The Meixi Lake area, further west, is the newest large development. Planned throughout, wide roads, modern compounds with service lifts. This is the easiest delivery in the city.
Kaifu and Yuhua, north and south east, are conventional urban districts with a mix of stock.
The industry here is construction machinery, and it is on a scale that surprises people. Two of the largest manufacturers of excavators and concrete equipment in the world are headquartered in Changsha, which accounts for much of the foreign engineering population. There is also a substantial media and entertainment industry, which brings a different sort of resident again.
The summer heat is the practical factor. Changsha is traditionally counted among the furnace cities and the combination of heat and humidity in high summer is serious for a working crew.
The route drives the figure more than the address does. A rail shipment and a Shanghai routed sea shipment into the same flat can differ substantially, and the middle option, Guangdong by sea, is often the one nobody offers unprompted.
