Meyrin is a separate commune beside Geneva, built as one of Switzerland’s first planned satellite towns and now best known for the international research campus on its edge, which straddles the French border.

The research campus beside Meyrin straddles the French border

The research organisation next door draws scientists, engineers and technical staff from across the world, most of them on defined terms rather than permanently. That gives Meyrin an arrival and departure rate quite unlike an ordinary Swiss commune of its size.

It also gives the moves a particular character. People arriving are often experienced at it, frequently moving a modest household rather than a full one, and usually working to a start date somebody else set.

The town itself was planned rather than grown, which for a removal is good news. Blocks were laid out with space around them, service access was designed in, and lifts were built to a standard rather than squeezed into an existing building.

Meyrin also appears as CERN and Geneva canton. Whichever version you searched for, this is the same city and the same page. Give the mover the address exactly as it appears on your Swiss lease.

What the border does here

The research site next to Meyrin extends across the Franco-Swiss frontier, and a good number of the people working there live on the French side. That produces collections and deliveries that cross the border as a matter of routine.

For a removal, the question is simply which country the address is in, and it is worth answering explicitly rather than assuming that working at the campus means living in Switzerland. A French address is a different customs position from a Swiss one.

Where the move is an arrival into Switzerland from outside the EU and EFTA, the requirements are as anywhere else in the country: form 18.44, the six month rule, and evidence of transfer of domicile.

📚 Not Geneva, and it matters

A separate commune, minutes away

Meyrin has its own commune with its own administration. Registration on arrival happens here, and so does any application for a reserved bay for the removal vehicle. Neither goes through the city of Geneva.

This catches people out because everything else about daily life points to Geneva, which is minutes away. The administration does not follow the commute, and the same is true of Carouge, Onex and Lancy on the other side of the city.

Say Meyrin, not Geneva, when you brief a mover. It changes who the parking application goes to and how long it takes.

🏗 What a planned town gives a crew

Access, and why it is straightforward

Meyrin was laid out deliberately rather than growing outward from an old core, and it shows in ways that matter on moving day. There is space between the blocks, service access was part of the design, and lifts were built in rather than retrofitted.

Delivery vehicle on the final stretch into Meyrin

Compared with a Geneva address in the old city, or with Carouge next door and its eighteenth century archways, this is comfortable work. Vehicles can get close, turning is possible, and the lift will generally take a wardrobe.

What you do get is active building management, so expect lift bookings, protective covering and restricted hours. Get the manager contact to the mover early.

Meyrin questions

Is Meyrin part of Geneva?

No. It is a separate commune with its own administration, sitting beside the city. Registration on arrival and any application for a reserved bay for the removal vehicle both go to Meyrin rather than to the city of Geneva, and the processes are not automatically the same.

I will be working at the research campus. Where will I be living?

That is the question to answer explicitly, because the site straddles the Franco-Swiss frontier and a good number of people working there live on the French side. Working at the campus does not mean living in Switzerland, and a French address is a different customs position.

Is access here easier than central Geneva?

Considerably. Meyrin was laid out as a planned town rather than growing from an old core, so there is space between the blocks, service access was designed in, and lifts were built to a standard rather than retrofitted. Vehicles can get close and turning is possible.

What will the building require?

Lift bookings, protective covering in the lobby and lift, and usually restricted hours. Building management here is active in the way it is in modern Swiss blocks generally. Get the manager contact to the mover early, because none of it can be arranged on the morning.

Are moves here usually smaller?

Often. The research community arriving is largely on defined terms rather than permanently, and tends to move a modest household rather than a full one. Many have done it several times before and arrive with an inventory ready.

Should I share a lorry?

It depends on your start date. Research and technical postings usually come with a date somebody else set, which removes the flexibility a shared load needs. Where the timing is genuinely open, sharing is considerably cheaper on this route.

What language will I be dealing in?

French, in the canton of Geneva. The commune, your lease, the utilities and any parking application will all be in French, even though the working language on the campus itself may well be English. Give the address as your Swiss lease writes it.
