Lancy is one of the larger Geneva communes and it is currently being rebuilt in parts. New districts have gone up around the station while the old villages of Grand-Lancy and Petit-Lancy keep their original lanes, and a delivery to one is nothing like a delivery to the other.

Moving companies meet two building ages here, sometimes on one street

The new development is a pleasure to work in. Blocks built in the last few years have loading areas designed into them, lifts sized for furniture, wide corridors and somewhere for a vehicle to stand that was drawn on a plan rather than found.

The old village cores are the opposite. Grand-Lancy and Petit-Lancy were villages before Geneva reached them, and their lanes are narrow with buildings that predate any thought of a removal lorry.

Because the redevelopment is recent, a street name alone may not tell a mover which of those they are dealing with. Say what the building is: a new block, or an older village property.

Lancy also appears as Grand-Lancy and Petit-Lancy. Whichever version you searched for, this is the same city and the same page. Give the mover the address exactly as it appears on your Swiss lease.

A moving target on a map

What rapid redevelopment does to an address

Where a district has gone up recently, street names and numbers can be newer than the mapping a driver is using. That is an occasional and avoidable nuisance rather than a serious problem.

Send the postcode and, if the building is new, the name of the development as well as the street. A crew heading for a road that a satellite navigation system has never heard of will otherwise lose half an hour.

Registration on arrival is with the commune of Lancy, not the city of Geneva, as it is for Carouge, Onex and Meyrin around the same city.

🏚 The two Lancys

Old village cores inside a modern commune

Grand-Lancy and Petit-Lancy were separate villages before the city reached them, and both keep their original street patterns. Lanes are narrow, buildings are older and lower, and there is limited room to stand.

Delivery vehicle on the final stretch into Lancy

Deliveries there use a standing point agreed with the commune and a carry, which is the usual Swiss arrangement for an old core. The areas are small so the carries are short.

Both names are used freely in addresses, and both belong to the commune of Lancy for registration purposes.

💬 Two dialects, one trade

What a policy calls it

A relocation policy in American English says moving company where a British one says removal firm. The middle option, materials supplied for Lancy and you pack, exists under both names. What differs is the spelling, not the service. HHG on a manifest, household goods in a policy and removal goods on a British quote all mean your belongings.

🏗 New build, and why it is easier
Movers loading for a removal to Lancy

What recent construction gives a crew

A block completed in the last few years was designed at a point when nobody builds without thinking about deliveries. There is a loading bay or at least a designated space, the service lift takes furniture, and the corridors are wide enough to turn a sofa in.

That is a genuinely different job from an older Geneva address, and it should be reflected in the time on site rather than the price of the vehicle.

The condition attached is management. New blocks are run properly, so expect a booked lift slot, protective covering and restricted hours. Get the building manager contact to the mover early.

Lancy questions

What is the difference between Grand-Lancy and Petit-Lancy?

They were two separate villages before Geneva reached them, and both keep their original street patterns with narrow lanes and older buildings. Both names are used freely in addresses and both belong to the commune of Lancy for registration purposes.

Is a new building easier to deliver into?

Considerably. A block completed recently was designed when deliveries were already a consideration, so there is a loading space, a service lift that takes furniture and corridors wide enough to turn a sofa in. It shows in the time on site.

What do the new blocks require?

A booked lift slot, protective covering in the lobby and lift, and usually restricted hours. New blocks here are managed properly, which is the trade for the easy access. Get the building manager contact to the mover early.

Will a driver find a new address?

Usually, but not always. Where a district has gone up recently the street names and numbers can be newer than the mapping in use. Send the postcode and the name of the development as well as the street, and nobody loses half an hour.

Is Lancy part of Geneva?

No. It is its own commune with its own administration, as are Carouge, Onex and Meyrin around the same city. Registration on arrival and any parking application go to Lancy rather than to the city of Geneva.

How long is the inland leg from the frontier?

Very short. Geneva sits on the French border itself, so once a vehicle is through the Swiss frontier it is essentially there. That makes this one of the shortest inland legs and one of the more predictable Swiss deliveries.

What language will I be dealing in?

French, in the canton of Geneva. The commune, your lease, the utilities and any parking application will all be in French. Give the address exactly as your Swiss lease writes it rather than translating any part of it.
