Durban has the busiest container port in Africa, and if you are moving here your goods clear roughly fifteen minutes from where they will be delivered. That is the shortest gap between quay and door of any South African city, and it is the single biggest reason a Durban move usually lands faster than a Gauteng one.
The volume cuts both ways. Durban handles a large share of the traffic for the whole of southern Africa, so a quiet week and a congested one look very different at the terminal. Clearance timing is the variable, not the sailing.
The city climbs sharply from the beachfront to the Berea ridge in a few kilometres. Musgrave, Morningside and Glenwood sit on that slope in older blocks with small lifts and tight service entrances, and a lot of Durban delivery planning is really lift planning.

The Port of Durban sits immediately south of the city centre with the container terminal on Bayhead. From there the N3 climbs inland through Pietermaritzburg and Van Reenen towards Gauteng, and the M4 runs north up the coast to Umhlanga and beyond.
Musgrave, Morningside and Glenwood are the older residential blocks. Lifts are small, many are original, and a three seater sofa often will not fit. Service entrances are narrow and the streets have mature trees with low branches over the parking bays.
Kloof, Hillcrest and Waterfall sit above the city on the way to Pietermaritzburg. Large properties, long driveways, and gates that open inwards onto a slope. Access is generally easier than the ridge but the climb is hard on a loaded vehicle in summer.
Traffic on the M4 shapes the timing more than the addresses do. Deliveries booked into the afternoon peak lose an hour easily, and complexes along the coast usually restrict lorry access to weekday mornings.
A removal van and a single man is the wrong tool for this job. Goods travel by sea in a full or shared container, and the local vehicle is only the last stage of it.

The entry needs form DA 304 with form P1.160 and a specified inventory of the container contents. Returning South African residents must show at least six months abroad for reasons other than touring or studying. Nothing under the rebate may be sold or disposed of within six months of clearance without the duty falling due.
Humidity is the thing people from the UK underestimate. Durban is subtropical and the summer months are heavy with it. Goods that sit in unventilated storage for weeks can pick up mould, particularly upholstery, leather and anything wooden that was packed slightly damp.
Deliveries in January and February get planned around the heat. Crews start early and the working day shortens, which is normal practice here rather than a sign of a slow mover.

Faster than anywhere else in the country in a good week, because the terminal is close to the city and the volume means the processes are well worn. Congestion is the variable. Durban handles traffic for much of southern Africa, so a busy period can add days. SARS clearance runs on the paperwork, so a complete DA 304 and inventory matters more than the sailing date.
It can, and it is the most common avoidable problem on this route. Durban summers are subtropical and anything packed with residual moisture will suffer over a six to ten week sea leg. Ask for proper export wrapping on upholstery and leather, and avoid long unventilated storage on arrival. Wooden furniture that has spent decades in a dry UK house needs time to settle.
Getting the vehicle there is rarely the problem. Getting a sofa into the lift is. Musgrave and Morningside have older blocks with small original lifts and narrow service entrances, and hoisting over a balcony is sometimes the only route. Measure the lift and the stairwell before the survey and tell your mover the block name.
Only if you are moving inland. For a Durban address the road leg is short. For Gauteng, most containers clear at Durban and run up the N3 through Pietermaritzburg and Van Reenen, which is roughly six hundred kilometres and adds a day. That inland leg is priced separately and is worth checking on any quote.
Volume drives it first, then whether you share a container or take one to yourself, then access at both ends. Durban has an advantage on the road leg because the port is close, so an equivalent load usually costs less delivered here than in Gauteng. We do not publish a price before a survey.
