Serving international removals, relocation and shipping from the UK to South Africa. Internasionale verhuising na Suid-Afrika.
Shipping furniture to South Africa is mostly a packing problem rather than a freight one. The crossing is long, the container gets hot, and the climate at the other end is nothing like a British house. Most damage on this route happens because of those three facts rather than because something was dropped.
Solid timber is the item that needs thinking about. A wardrobe that has held moisture in a damp UK house for thirty years will give it up over a South African winter, and on the Highveld it will do so quickly. Shrinkage and split panels follow. Nothing about the shipping causes that; the destination does.
Upholstery and leather have the opposite problem on the coast. Durban, Umhlanga and the Lowveld are humid, and anything packed with residual moisture that then sits in an unventilated garage for weeks will grow mould. Ventilated storage matters more than most people realise.
International Removals Companies is a free enquiry matching service operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD, company 07425576. It does not carry out removals and holds no vehicles of its own. A single vetted mover from the network picks the enquiry up.
Export wrapping is not the same as domestic wrapping. Items are individually wrapped, edges and corners protected, and anything fragile crated rather than blanketed. Mirrors, glass tops and stone go into purpose built cases.
Pianos, large armoires and anything with a stone or marble element need naming at survey stage. They change the crating, sometimes the crew size, and occasionally whether the item can get into the property at the far end at all.
Anything you would replace within a couple of years. Freight is priced on volume, so a bulky low value item costs the same to ship as a compact valuable one and it fills space you are paying for.
Moving companies will tell you the same thing: flat pack furniture rarely survives a second dismantling and reassembly well. Garden furniture, mattresses past their best and anything already loose at the joints are the usual candidates for leaving behind.
Alcohol and tobacco are excluded from the SARS rebate entirely, so anything in those categories attracts duty and VAT even when the rest of your effects do not.
Marine cover is priced on declared value and it needs an itemised list rather than a lump sum. Undeclaring to save a small premium is a false economy on a crossing this long.
Read what the cover actually excludes. Items packed by the owner rather than by the crew are commonly outside it, which matters if you were planning to do some of the boxes yourself.
Send your UK collection address, the South African delivery address with any access notes, and a rough inventory. One vetted network firm already running this route contacts you, surveys the move and confirms the quote. Free, with no obligation.
Get your free South Africa removals quoteHousehold effects arriving on a permanent change of residence qualify for relief from duty and VAT under rebate item 407.06 of Schedule No 4 to the Customs and Excise Act. VAT stands at 15 per cent. Motor vehicles, alcoholic drinks and tobacco are excluded and fall outside the rebate entirely.
The entry is supported by form DA 304 with form P1.160 and a specified inventory. Returning South African residents must show at least six months abroad for reasons other than touring or studying. Nothing brought in under the rebate may be sold or disposed of within six months of clearance without the duty falling due.

Properly export packed, almost always. What causes trouble on this route is not the crossing but the change in climate at the other end. Solid timber that has held moisture in a UK house shrinks in the dry Highveld air; upholstery and leather suffer in coastal humidity if stored unventilated. Both are manageable if you plan for them rather than discovering them.
It depends on the item rather than the principle. Freight is priced by volume, so bulky low value pieces cost as much to ship as compact valuable ones. Good solid furniture, antiques and anything you would not easily replace are usually worth sending. Flat pack, tired mattresses and garden furniture generally are not.
On the volume it occupies in the container, not on the number of items or their value. That is why cutting three bulky low value pieces from an inventory saves more than cutting thirty small ones. A survey measures the volume properly. We do not quote a figure beforehand because it would be a guess.
No, and generally you should not. The crew dismantles what needs dismantling as part of export packing, and they reassemble at the far end. Items you take apart and pack yourself often fall outside the marine insurance cover, which is a poor trade for the small saving. Leave it to the movers.
Yes, but say so at survey stage rather than on the day. Pianos, large armoires and stone topped pieces need purpose built crating, sometimes a larger crew, and occasionally a check that they can get into the destination property at all. A mover who knows about them in advance plans for them. One who finds out on the morning does not.
