Moving companies consolidating smaller loads for the same sailing

Serving international removals, relocation and shipping from the UK to South Africa. Internasionale verhuising na Suid-Afrika.

A part load means you pay for the space your goods occupy inside a container shared with other people's. It is the most used option on this route by some distance, and it is the right answer for most one and two bedroom moves. The trade off is time.

The container has to fill before it sails. Your goods go to a depot, wait for enough other consignments bound for the same port, and leave when the box is full. That wait is the single biggest difference between a part load and a container to yourself, and it is why published groupage ranges run several weeks longer.

Every consignment is wrapped, numbered, labelled and inventoried separately so nothing gets mixed up. That is standard practice rather than a premium service, and any mover who cannot explain how they keep consignments apart is worth avoiding.

International Removals Companies is a free enquiry matching service operated by DATACONTEXT (UK) LTD, company 07425576. We run no fleet and employ no packing crews. Removals are carried out entirely by the matched firm. Your details go to one vetted mover with volume on this route.

🛠 When a full container is actually cheaper

When a full container is actually cheaper

Somewhere around a three bedroom house the arithmetic flips. Below that you are paying for space and sharing the cost of the box. Above it you are paying for most of a container anyway and getting slower service for the privilege.

A survey settles it properly. The volume figure, not the number of bedrooms, is what decides, because two identical houses can differ by a third depending on what is in the loft.

🛠 What the wait actually costs you

What the wait actually costs you

Nothing directly, but it costs you certainty. If your lease starts on a fixed date and your goods are waiting for a container to fill, the gap is filled with storage or with buying things twice. That is where part load moves become expensive, not on the freight line.

Where dates are firm, ask what a sole use container would cost and compare total time rather than the freight figure alone. Sometimes paying more to ship sooner is the cheaper move.

🛠 Small loads and boxes

Small loads and boxes

Below about the contents of a studio, a part load is still the sensible sea option, though air freight starts to compete once the wait is priced in. Movers on this route will quote both.

A removal van and a driver is not an option here whatever the volume. Goods cross by sea in a container, and the local vehicle at each end is only the first and last stage of the journey.

📄 SARS and the entry

Customs relief on the way in

Household effects arriving on a permanent change of residence qualify for relief from duty and VAT under rebate item 407.06 of Schedule No 4 to the Customs and Excise Act. VAT stands at 15 per cent. Motor vehicles, alcoholic drinks and tobacco are excluded and fall outside the rebate entirely.

The entry is supported by form DA 304 with form P1.160 and a specified inventory. Returning South African residents must show at least six months abroad for reasons other than touring or studying. Nothing brought in under the rebate may be sold or disposed of within six months of clearance without the duty falling due.

Common questions

Questions about part Load Removals to South Africa

What is the difference between part load, groupage and LCL?

They are three names for the same thing. Your goods share a container with other consignments and you pay for the space you use rather than for the whole box. LCL stands for less than container load and is the freight industry term; groupage and part load are what removal companies say. If a quote uses one word and another quote uses a different one, you are comparing like with like.

Why does a part load take longer?

Because the container has to fill before it sails. Your consignment goes to a depot where loads are combined, and waits for enough other goods bound for the same South African port. Published ranges put shared container transit several weeks longer than a sole use container for that reason. The sea crossing itself is identical. The wait is at the front end.

Will my things get mixed up with someone else's?

They should not. Each consignment is wrapped, numbered, labelled and inventoried separately before it goes into the container, and the inventory is what SARS reads at clearance. This is standard practice rather than an extra. If a moving company cannot explain clearly how it keeps consignments apart, that tells you something useful.

At what point should I book a whole container?

Around a three bedroom house the numbers usually favour a sole use container, though volume rather than bedroom count is what decides. If your dates are fixed, the calculation changes earlier, because the consolidation wait on a shared container has to be covered by storage or by doing without. Ask for both figures and compare total time.

How much do part load removals to South Africa cost?

It is priced on the volume you occupy, so a smaller load genuinely costs less rather than being rounded up. What varies alongside it is access at both ends and how far inland the delivery goes. We do not publish a price, because a figure produced before a survey is guesswork. Your matched moving company confirms it once the volume is measured.
