A container is the way to send a whole home or a large shipment to Jamaica. You can take a 20ft or a 40ft container to yourself, or share the space in a part load and split the cost. Either way it travels by sea and clears at Kingston or Montego Bay, then a mover delivers to the door. Tell us roughly how much you're sending and we'll connect you with one vetted shipper. Asking is free.
✅ The quick answer — A 20ft or 40ft container for a home, or a shared part load for less. A vetted shipper sorts it. Free to enquire.
📦 20ft or 40ft — A 20ft suits a smaller, 1 to 2-bedroom home; a 40ft suits a larger household.
🧾 Shared or sole-use — A part load shares the space and the cost but waits to fill; a sole-use container goes when you're ready.
💵 What it costs — A full container runs into a few thousand pounds, with a 40ft dearer than a 20ft.
⏱️ How long it takes — Roughly 3 weeks at sea, and about 4 to 6 weeks door to door with clearance.
📍 Where it clears — At Kingston or Montego Bay, then on by road to your address.
The two common sizes are the 20ft and the 40ft. As a rough guide, a 20ft container holds the contents of a smaller home, around one to two bedrooms, while a 40ft takes a larger, three or four-bedroom household. If you're not sure, your shipper works out the volume in cubic metres so you book the right size rather than paying for space you won't fill.
Sending less than a container-load? A part load is almost always the better choice, which we cover next.
You have two ways to book the space. A shared container, also called a part load or groupage, splits a container with other shipments. It's cheaper because you only pay for the room you use, but it waits to fill before it sails, so it can take a little longer. A sole-use container, 20ft or 40ft, is yours alone: dearer, but it goes when you're ready and holds far more.
As a rule of thumb, a sole-use container makes sense once you're sending a large volume; below that, a part load is better value. Your shipper helps you weigh it up. The cost guide compares the options side by side.
A container takes the things a barrel can't: furniture, white goods like a fridge or washer, mattresses, boxes of belongings, and the contents of a full home. In a sole-use container it's sometimes possible to ship a car alongside your goods, if it's declared properly. The car shipping guide covers the vehicle rules.
The same customs rules apply as for any shipment, so the prohibited items that can't go in a barrel can't go in a container either. Your shipper helps you put together the inventory customs will want to see.
A full container runs into a few thousand pounds, with a 40ft costing more than a 20ft, and a shared part load costing less again. The price moves with the volume, where the collection is in the UK, the Jamaican wharf and the final delivery. By sea it's roughly three weeks, and about four to six weeks door to door once you add clearance.
Your container clears at Kingston or Montego Bay, then travels on by road. We cover the whole island, from Kingston and Portmore to Montego Bay and Mandeville, with every town on the Jamaica hub.
A container suits furniture and bulky items well. Your partner export-packs each piece and, where needed, builds timber crates for fragile, heavy or high-value items, then loads and lashes everything so nothing shifts at sea. Beds and wardrobes can be dismantled for transit and reassembled at the other end. Sending specific pieces rather than filling a container? See furniture shipping to Jamaica.
Moving or sending money to Jamaica often means changing currency, whether for a deposit, a property or settling in. For years we've pointed customers to trusted partners who handle any currency, so the money side is one less worry.

For a full household container, partners hold FIDI FAIM, the worldwide standard for international movers, independently audited by Ernst and Young. In the UK, BAR Overseas points to the same vetting. For barrels and part loads, partners are seasoned Caribbean shippers who know the Kingston and Montego Bay wharfs.
