Sending things home to Jamaica? You're in the right place. Most things go by sea, packed in a barrel or a container. They clear at one of two wharfs: Kingston or Montego Bay. A barrel is the cheap, popular way to send a few boxes of clothes, food and gifts. A full container suits a whole home. And if you're moving back for good, the returning residents concession can bring your used belongings in duty-free. Tell us what you're sending, pick what fits below, and we'll connect you with one vetted mover. That bit's free.
✅ The quick answer — Tell us what you're sending. We connect you with one vetted, experienced partner. It's free.
📦 The cheapest way — A few things? Send a barrel. A whole home? A shared or full container.
💷 What it costs — A barrel starts around £80. A full container runs to a few thousand. See the cost guide.
⏱️ How long it takes — Roughly 3 weeks at sea, and about 4 to 6 weeks door to door once you add clearance. A full container's quicker than a shared one.
📋 What you'll need — Your TRN and ID to clear goods. Returning residents also need Form C27 and an interview.

How much you're sending decides the method. That's the first thing to settle, and each guide walks you through the rest.
Most people send a barrel or two of clothes, food and gifts. Some ship a car, or a full container when they're moving home for good. If you're a returning resident, there's a duty concession worth knowing about before you pack a thing. Whatever you choose, the shipping is the easy part once the paperwork is lined up.

The service runs both ways. Most of what we do is moves between the UK and Jamaica, but we also connect people leaving the island for the United States and the UK, the two homes of the largest Jamaican communities overseas. The sea-freight idea is the same; the customs changes at the other end, and your vetted partner handles it. The USA is our main outbound route from Jamaica.
Your goods clear at one of two wharfs, then travel on by road to your door. Kingston serves the east and centre. Montego Bay serves the west.
Most household belongings travel fine to Jamaica. The usual loads are clothes, shoes, bedding and linens, kitchenware, small appliances, tools, books and toys in barrels or boxes; furniture, white goods and larger items in a container; and cars by container or roll-on roll-off. Non-perishable food and toiletries fill many Christmas barrels. Used personal and household effects are what returning residents bring home under the duty concession.
Some things need care or a permit. Plants, fresh produce, meat and other animal products need agricultural clearance; pets need a permit from Veterinary Services; and firearms, certain medicines and a few other goods are restricted or prohibited. Your vetted partner flags anything that needs a permit before it sails, so nothing is held at the wharf.
A quick word on what we are. We're a free route-matching service: one short form, and one suitable vetted partner handles your quote, with no flood of calls and your details not shared around. We aren't a removal company, a man with a van or a house clearance service — shipping to Jamaica means sea freight to Kingston or Montego Bay and customs at the wharf, which is the work of an experienced international shipper. You can still pick a barrel, a part load or a full container to suit your budget.
We keep this page useful for real users, however they search. Related terms include UK to Jamaica removals, send a barrel to Jamaica, what you can ship to Jamaica, Caribbean shipping and freight to Jamaica. One short form brings your quote by email.
Here's the simple bit. Tell us what you're sending, and we connect you with a single partner suited to your shipment and your route. No call centre, no ten quotes to wade through.
For a full household move, the partner holds FIDI FAIM, the global standard for international movers. It's backed by an independent Ernst and Young review. In Britain, BAR Overseas signals the same level of vetting. For barrels and smaller shipments, partners are experienced Caribbean shippers who know the Kingston and Montego Bay wharfs inside out.
A word on who we are. International Removals Companies isn't a shipper itself. We point your enquiry to one vetted partner, and they carry out the work. This free service has run since November 2010. Changing money is part of most moves abroad, whether you're buying a home in Jamaica, paying a deposit or just settling in. For many years we've pointed customers to trusted partners who handle any currency, so the money side is one less thing to worry about.
Ask about the money side when you request your quote, and we'll connect you with the right partner.
Customs is the part people worry about, but it's mostly straightforward once you know the steps. Goods clear at the Kingston or Montego Bay wharf, and you'll need your TRN and your paperwork. Every traveller aged 18 or over also gets a US$1,000 duty-free allowance on personal and household goods, set by Jamaica Customs, which covers a lot of an ordinary barrel.
Moving back for good? You may qualify for a one-time duty concession on used personal and household effects. To be eligible you must be a Jamaican aged 18 or over. You need three consecutive years living abroad, and a plan to return for good. The concession is arranged with the Jamaica Customs Agency Returning Residents Unit, which has offices in Kingston and Montego Bay. You attend an interview within six months of arrival, using Form C27. Cars are a separate matter. They're never duty-free. They need an import licence from the Trade Board before they ship, and age limits apply, though returning residents can usually bring a vehicle up to ten years old.
That's the short version. The returning residents and car shipping guides cover the rules in full. Your mover and their local agent help you prepare the paperwork.
