Trinidad and Tobago gives returning nationals a generous customs concession. To qualify you must be a citizen or former citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, or the spouse of one, at least 18, who has lived overseas for at least five consecutive years and is returning to reside permanently. You can then bring your used household and personal effects in free of customs duty and VAT, provided you've owned and used them for at least a year and import them within two months of your return. There's full relief up to a CIF value of 250,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars; the excess above that attracts duty, VAT and a special tax. The concession is one householder per family.
You also get a one-time vehicle concession. We connect you with one vetted partner who knows the process inside out.
The concession is applied for, not automatic. You hire a customs broker to complete the customs forms, C82 and where needed C84, and you send a letter to the Comptroller of Customs listing the items and the reason you qualify. You'll provide proof of residence abroad, such as a passport and employment records, an affidavit sworn before a Commissioner, and a detailed inventory alongside the bill of lading. The broker files the customs declaration in ASYCUDA World. Your vetted partner and the broker prepare and lodge it all, so the duty-free entry is approved before your goods are released.
Most home moves go in a shared or full container.
Bring one vehicle in under the concession.
Every town, island and service.
The vehicle concession is a one-time facility. The car must be owned before your return and imported six months before or within a year after you return. The duty waiver scales with ownership: more than six months but under a year gives 25 per cent off the duty; one to two years gives 50 per cent; over two years gives 90 per cent. On a qualifying private car you also get full relief from VAT and motor vehicle tax. On household effects, anything above the 250,000 dollar CIF allowance attracts duty, VAT and a 10 per cent special tax on the excess. Your partner and the broker tell you clearly what qualifies before you ship.
Moving home often means moving money too. The local currency is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar. For years we've connected customers with trusted partners who handle any currency, so the money side is simple and fair. It's offered through our partners, with no hidden fees.
The concession rewards getting the paperwork right. We connect you with one partner who handles it, working hand in hand with established overseas removal companies and international movers. For a full home, partners hold FIDI FAIM accreditation, the global benchmark, with BAR Overseas the UK marker, and a broker lodges the concession at the Port of Port of Spain.
